The head of India's leading information technology company WIPRO, Abidali Neemuchwala,  says he took the risky path by choosing an assignment to South Africa when his peers were heading for the United States as engineers. That assignment gave him a chance for higher level activities, better perspective, and ways he could stand out.  He tells how these early experiences helped shape him for the job he has today.

The best way to tell when one is taking a risky path, he says, is when all your peers are not looking at doing what you have chosen to do. Its different, and it has made all the difference for Neemuchwala. In 1994 South Africa was entering the Mandela era after Apartheid, and presented something very different from the United States. Mr Abidali chose this risky and different path, with new opportunities as well as a leap into the unknown.

Inflation is a problem in developing countries of Asia, Africa and the Arab world. Zhu Min, a Chinese economist pointed out the significant impact of a rise in food prices in India and China. Food makes up 47% of the basket of products used for India's consumer price index and 34% for China. Rising food prices hurt the poorer sections of the Indian people, said Azim Premji, chairman of Wipro. This could result in political uncertainty. A rise in prices in Tunisia, Algeria and Egypt is leading to street protests.

Infosys built its business on outsourcing by U.S. business. President Trump's executive order to "Buy American, Hire American" is changing the way it does business. Infosys plans to hire 10,000 software engineers in the U.S. by 2019. 

A big change is also coming from new technologies in computing that require small teams to work side by side with customers. This is best done by having software engineers in U.S. offices and not engineers in offices thousands of miles away. A president of Infosys says this is the new face of computing at Infosys.

Tata Motors is to manufacture it low cost car which would sell for less than $3000 at a factory being built in Singur near Kolkata. Azimji Premji of Wipro is one of the few Indian business leaders with a strong bonding with Gandhi's ideas of personal responsibility for India's betterment and the betterment of millions of ordinary people in India. He says Gandhi influenced him only next to his mother who ran an orthopaedic hospital for disabled children for 50 years, and learned what it took to do this as well as the difference it made in people's lives. He quotes Gandhi as his own personal philosophy-  "Supposing I have come by a fair amount of wealth- either by way of legacy, or by means of trade and industry- I must know that all that wealth does not belong to me; what belongs to me is the right to an honorable livelihood, no better than that enjoyed by millions of others,. The rest of my wealth belongs to the community and must be used for the welfare of the community." Azimji Premji gives as three enduring parts of Gandhi's leadership- the pursuit of truth, the importance of means over ends, and empathy for all human beings. He cites a saying of Gandhi to be seen at Sabarmati Ashram and Gandhi Smriti- "I will give you a talisman. Whenever you are in doubt or when the self becomes too much with you, apply the following test. Recall the face of the poorest and the weakest man (woman) whom you may have seen, and ask yourself of the step you contemplate is going tobe of any use to him or her. Will he or she gain anything by it? Will it restore him (her) to control over his (her) own life and destiny? In other words will it lead to swaraj for the hungry and spiritually starving millions? Then you will find your doubts and your self melt away." ...

Intel's efforts to bring a low priced computer to India. PC's priced 20% lower than the lowest priced Intel based PC's sold in India, will be marketed as part of a new Indian project. Intel chief Otellini announced this when he visited India recently. This follows an initiative by AMD in India. Intel's PC's would be sold by Wipro, HCL Infosystems and Zenith Computers. Interesting is the linkup to offer financing with ICICI Bank , an Indian bank. This would be available in a few months. The lowest priced computers presently cost Rs 10,000 or $220 according to the NYTimes. By 2007 inexpensive notebook computers will be made available by Intel to students and academic institutions for under $400. In addition it says Intel plans to provide free training in computer technology to 800,000 Indian teachers.

Tata and WIPRO executives say they depend on in-house training programs because many of the engineering graduates in the recruitment pool are not qualified. Recruitment firm NIIT Ltd. says 75% of technical graduates and 85% of general graduates are not fully qualified to work in information technology and other industries, based on assessment tests conducted by the firm. This is happening even as the engineering colleges in India have seats for 1.5 million graduates, according to the National Association for Software and Services. The problem is that the focus is on rote learning, and not on comprehension and critical thinking skills. By keeping the tution at low levels the revenue is not enough to pay teachers salaries at decent levels and attract good teachers. The schools do not generate the strong reading and comprehension skills necessary for jobs in growing fields. Annual surveys by Pratham looked at grade school performance of 13,000 schools across India. This shows about half of the fifth graders cannot read at a second grade level....

Friedman describes the lack of decisionmaking, initiative and courage in the Eurozone, India and China to tackle difficult problems. During his visit to India he describes the problems India faces. A serious problem with lack of good governance within the democratic framework. India also has a growing population that will soon surpass China's population, which makes the task of development that much harder, with the small steps India is taking to move forward not making a serious impact. Azim Premji, chairman of Wipro, described it this way: "There is a complete lack of decision-making among leaders in the government. If prompt action is not taken, the country will face a setback. You must appreciate how serious it is." Friedman sees a similiar situation in the eurozone countries as new governments are being formed in Greece and Italy by Papademos and Mario Monti, both technocrats from the European Union. This has the added complication because these experts have not been elected. The fact that they have support and goodwill is because of the failure of the political class in Greece and Italy. The failure of the political class in the U.S. is evident from the stymied negotiations over the deficit, and the lack of leadership from President Obama....

Security for women working in software companies in India is an important issue considering that the number of women in software companies will approach 50% according to Nasscom by 2010, and the poorly paid and sketchy background of many hired drivers in India. Because the women work at odd hours of the night to keep in touch with westen countries clients in different time zones this is a very real issue. The cases of a Wipro and a HP employee in India being raped and killed and drivers charged bring to light an important issue for women employees at software companies and companies in general in India. It is important to attract talented employees for companies to have the best arrangements for safe transportation at additional cost. Parents of these young women and the women should feel that its just as safe as for men for them to work or travel at night. In this case the Supreme Court decision was to let stand a lower court ruling that Mittal CEO of HP Global Soft was liable for prosecution in the case of a rape and killing by a driver of a HP employee, because the company had hired the driver and made the transportation arrangements that led to this death....

Knowing the thinking and mood of the younger generation of engineers programmers and other staff is critical. They are more optimistic and impatient about things so companies have to move quickly to change things to retain talent. The other major change is the number of young women that are joining. Nasscom the software industry association in India says that last year this was 35% and will rise to 45% by 2010. This is amazing rise considering that it started from very low numbers and these young women are more vocal than the men. It means companies have to keep their minds open to gender issues and respond. Giving young people a voice in the affairs of the company, giving them achance to be not lost in the crowd, a shot at challenging assignments for the talented, some kind of inhouse training program in management and in other areas so that they can keep upgrading their education and value to the company, some peers and superiors assigned to mentor new employees, hiring from smaller cities so that those who want to be near family can do so and have higher loyalty than with chasing high level talent in bigger cities and supplementing with good inhouse training , are a list of some of the things being tried by companies. ...
