They all say their faith, grit, family and spouse, and setting priorities, are helping them both make it in their careers and be engaged parents at the same time. Pew Research shows of women in both parties Republican and Democratic, about 70% want careers outside the home, and about 88% want good parenting at the same time.   ...

Pamela Druckerman is the author of "Bringing Up Bebe: One American Mother Discovers the Wisdom of French Parenting," which describes her experiences in France and with French ways of child raising. Unlike Ms. Druckerman's book title, the title of this article is about why French parenting is superior, which is not really the point. The point being how Americans can learn from other ways of doing parenting that would make it easier, more effective and less stressful. Brigid Schulte in an article in the Washington Post reviewing Druckerman's observations, says an important reason why French parenting is more relaxed is the comprehensive system of child care in France. This is financed by the government and has wholehearted French support. By contrast the American system is chaotic in comparison with constant worry about finding good child care, leaving mothers with the difficult choice between careers and being stay at home mothers.

Brigid Schulte says French parents can be more relaxed in their parenting because of the reliable state financed childcare system in France. France ranks first in the 34 nation OECD for 100% preschool attendance, with the U.S. way below at 46%. The U.S. is the only country in the developed world that has no federal paid parental leave policy. This puts enormous stress on mothers, and also on fathers who share the tasks of parenting. This is one reason why there is a long tradition of working mothers in France, and why American mothers are constantly having to make choices of staying at home and parenting or trying to juggle work and careers.

Members of the U.S. Congress lead a lousy life with life split between the capital and their home state location, most are weekend dads or moms. This makes them less likely to grasp the issues of work-life balance and the issues of parenting faced by average working families or couples with both parents working, says this essay in Politico magazine. This is true also of understanding issues facing women and mothers. Hard to believe but this report points out that Congress in the U.S. does not have a family friendly leave policy and no restroom for women till 2011 on the floor of the House. Similar issues face women in Japan and other countries for women in parliament. Former Speaker Ryan says he is tired of being a "weekend Dad." Janet Yellen Fed chairwoman, says many obstacles still exist for women in the workforce. Bringing more women into the workforce will increase the productive capacity of the American economy. The increasing participation of women in the workforce was factor in the growth and prosperity of America by the middle of the 20th century. In a speech sharing her personal narrative at Brown University, her alma mater, she described how other nations had passed the U.S. in women's participation in the workforce, and how it remains stalled at 75% for women either working or looking for work. Her speech was at a conference "125 Years of Women at Brown." The U.S. is now 17th among 22 developed nations in participation of women in workforce, mostly because of government and business policies that relate to paid maternity leave, affordable child care, and flexible work schedules.

Achieving a right balance between the needs for public health in developing countries- and the need for cost reduction in developed countries- with the need to keep innovation, is the challenge facing the Indian Supreme Court as it hears the Novartis case on its leukemia drug Gleevec. The efforts by Novartis and other western pharmaceutical companies to restrict the flow of low cost generic drugs from India. India stopped granting patents on drugs in 1970. It only resumed giving patents under a WTO agreement on patents. The Indian government denied the patent on Gleevec and the case is now coming up before the Supreme Court.

A number of issues came up at the Women20 Summit in Berlin. Annette Niederfranke, Director of the International Labor Organization, brought up the issue of family reconciliation as "one of the toughest challenges for working women worldwide," that in order to meet obligations women tended to work in "non standard forms of employment and in part time work linked to lower wages, lower social security, lower benefits, and fewer training possibilities." Childcare was also an issue that was prominent considering the lack of adequate childcare in many countries including in the European Union. With responsibilities for the elderly, babies, and small children women tend to be in the workforce for shorter periods leading to men taking up many of the higher positions. Angela Merkel pointed out that Gemany tended to take a narrow view of professions available to girls, saying- "So it is very very important that we take a broader view of things while girls are still at school." Merkel also supports a Africa compact that would help women set up small and middle size businesses in poor countries. The "Digital" aspects of this and other efforts for women were a major topic being discussed. One idea that came up was that more cooperation from men was needed to make things happen. This is the third Women20 Summit after ones in Turkey and China, and a sense of momentum was felt by women. ...

A study by AARP of 514 brand name and generic drugs between 2005 and 2009, shows that generic drug prices went down an average of 31% during this period, and brand name drug prices went up by 41%. One of the authors of the report says that it is important to look at individual drug prices and not studies showing total spending on drugs, because this is a significant cost for people paying out-of-pocket, It drives up insurance premiums, and pushes retirees into coverage gaps in Medicare Part D drug program. Analysts indicate pharmaceutical companies are increasing prices on drugs before patent expiration to get as much profit before the patents expire.
