Compare this to Blair House in Washington DC home of the publisher Preston Blair during the 1830's which serves as the residence of foreign guests to the US. Winfield House sits on many acres compared to Blair House near the White House on Pennsylvania Avenue in its modest appearance on the street itself. A contrast between two nations. Winfield House is used as ambassador's residence by the US Ambassador and has 35 rooms compared to the few rooms in Blair House. Blair House has more historic significance as residence of Harry Truman, and it is where Blair as Lincoln's emissary offered Robert Lee the command of the Union Army after Fort Sumter surrendered, marking the start of the Civil War.

Who knew that Prince William had actually slept on the streets of London in 2009 to understand homelessness and his passion to end homelessness through affordable housing. There is also the passion of the King Charles to do this another way by building aesthetic, friendly housing at lower cost so that it serves the needs of ordinary people. Prince Philip's career in the Royal Navy is remembered here in The Times. His service off the cost of Greece, at Gibraltar, and off the coast of Sumatra, on British Navy ships is recalled. Here he is seen saving airmen in the seas in the war against Japan near Sumatra, and in attacks on Italian cruisers after Italy invaded Greece. During this period till 1947 Philip served in the Royal Navy. When asked about any "if only" he had in a BBC interview, Philip once said there were none, except one about his career in the Royal Navy. Here he was following his uncle Lord Mountbatten. During his service in the war he leaned some things in the Navy that became part of his personality, the way he was, his style so to speak.  This was about being matter of fact, just doing it, never complaining, getting on with it. Philip was on the HMS Whelp on September 2, 1945, when the Japanese surrendered. He saw British seamen then who had been prisoners for many years, returning from camps. He recalls seeing tears stream down their cheeks as they sat with him in the mess on the ship and recognized the familiar environment, they could'nt speak. Shaped by these experiences Prince Philip reflected the values of devotion to duty, humility, respect for women, and feeling humbled by life's experiences. The experience in the Navy shaped his view of life. When asked about how he coped with wartime dead and wounded he once said - "we did'nt have counsellors rushing around every time someone let off a gun. You just got on with it." Seen out of context his remarks during the last few decades seemed blunt, seen in the context of the Navy and his formative experience in the ships in these years it was just the way it was. Simply who he was, as he once replied. With it also came the kind of dedication to country, being the "rock" of support that he was for Queen Elizabeth over many decades, and his unique style, now cherished by his family, the country and the British Commonwealth.   ...

King Charles views on Irish issues are well known and the efforts of the Tories to make things difficult for Ireland and Northern Ireland to work within the Peace Accords is seen by The Guardian as a sign that Ms. Truss and Mr. Johnson now find themselves working against the views held by Prince Charles as the constitutional head of Britain's government. Karen Elliott House, a former publisher of the Wall Street Journal, who won a Pulitzer prize for reporting on the Middle East, is now researching Saudi society. She now writes this scathing report from Saudi Arabia. She says that just as in Egypt, an old corrupt leadership continues in power for several decades, an old corrupt leadership in the form of 7000 princes in a vast royal family. King Abdullah is in his eighties and the ruling princes have an average age of 83, and have illnesses for which they are under medical treatment. They continue to lead a nation where 60% of the people are young people under the age of 18! Itself an astounding fact. Karen House points out that the internet and social media have also made the young very knowledgeable about the conditions in the country- where 40% of Saudis live in poverty and 70% cannot afford a home. Bad managemet by the princes has affected basic services including the sewage and drainage problems in Jeddah after the floods. It is astounding that far less wealthy Gulf sheikdoms are doing a better job of providing education, jobs and health care. Thirty years of visiting Saudi Arabia, and the last four years of intensive reporting, has persuaded Karen House that this situation is at an impasse that might end up resolving itself through some sort of upheaval. To Karen House this looks like the last days of the aging leadership under Brezhnev before the Soviet Union collapsed....

Lord Mountbatten's elder sister Alice was the princess of Battenberg in Germany. Prince Philip's mother was Alice. In this way the last Viceroy of India, a naval officer in World War II, and Prince Philip, are intimately connected. It was Lord Mountbatten who formed a friendship with Jawaharlal Nehru as he negotiated with Gandhi, Sardar Patel and Nehru for the independence of India after the war.  This legacy continued for Prince Philip as he and Princess Elizabeth established a friendly relationship with post 1947 India. After the overthrow of the Greece monarchy following World War I, Prince Philip and the Greece royal family sought refuge in England. Both Mountbatten and Philip are great grandsons of Queen Victoria. Mountbatten is a name adopted by Lord Mountbatten's father to avoid anti-German sentiment in England, adding Mount to Batten from Battenberg. Mountbatten's father was German and became a naturalized British citizen, serving in the British military.  Prince Philip adopted it as his surname after he went to live with his maternal uncle as a young boy. Prince Philip joined the Britannia Naval War College. In 1934 he was introduced to Princess Elizabeth by Lord Mountbatten at a family wedding.  The relationship is significant because of the contribution the two Mountbattens made to the transition to self-rule or Swaraj in India and to the British Commonwealth with its role for India and Britain. ...

Indian Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar makes a 3 day visit to Saudi Arabia. He addressed diplomats at the Prince Saud Al Faisal Institute of Diplomatic Studies in Riyadh. He will co-chair with Prince Faisal bin Al Saud the first ministerial meeting of the Committee on Political, Security, Social and Cultural  Cooperation (PSSC), established under the framework of the India-Saudi Arabia Strategic Partnership Council. What is happening here is that the Saudis can build their own ties in the region as they choose what is best for the future, compared to the relationship in the past which was as a state mainly dependent on the US but which sorely lagged behind in educationally, culturally, in developing its own scientific and technology institutions to transition into the modern age. The relationship in the past also appeared to be rooted in the colonial period that had transitioned only half way out of the colonial period into the relationship built by America's FDR and succeeding presidents with the royal family and monarchy of Saudi Arabia. Under Mohamad Bin Salman it now gives Saudis an opportunity to make its own choices with the help of neighbors such as India, Japan, and other countries. It also strengthens the relationship with the US and the EU in unseen ways through the Saudi relationship with India, Japan and other countries. Bilateral trade is at $30 billion for FY22 April to December. India imports 18% of crude oil imports from Saudi Arabia. Indian imports worth $23 billion, Indian exports worth $7 billion to Saudis. About 2.2 million Indians are living in Saudi Arabia. During the pandemic India was the closest health ally of the Saudis.   ...

The continuing war in Syria with the support of Iran, the involvement of Russia and bombing of Turkey related ethnic groups, worsen tensions in the Middle East. The Obama administration's efforts to work with Russia to bring a peaceful resolution to the Syrian civil war, cited by WP's correspondent Liz Sly, may have lost credibility with Sunni states because of Russia's bombing campaign in Syria and on the border with Turkey.

The lack of clear direction and leadership would have lead to something like this happening sooner or later but the way it finally brought an end to a century of the Bancroft family's control and the manner in which Murdoch patiently waited for Dow Jones to be brought under News Corporation, for all the family's talk about ideals ending with asking for Dow Jones to assume lawyer and investment banking advisory fees in exchange for agreement, is a story about corporate dynasties rise and fall just like the royal dynasties of previous centuries. ...

Army General Martin Dempsey is expected to become the next chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff in the U.S.. He brings a low key intellectual approach to the job, and was recently appointed chief of staff of the Army. He has worked in key roles in training and transformation of the military, led a combat division in Iraq and supervised the training of Iraqi security forces. Between 2001-2003 he managed the Saudi Arabian National Guard Modernization Program, an internal defence force guarding the Saudi royal family and the holy cities of Mecca and Medina. King Salman appoints Mohamed bin Nayef, 55 years-old, as the deputy crown prince in Jan. 2015. The crown prince is Muqrin Abdulaziz, 69 years-old. Mohamed Bin Nayef is the son of the Interior Minister, who worked under his father from 1999 till he became the new Interior minister in 2012. Nayef has pursued an aggressive program to remove Al Qaeda in Saudi Arabia. By taking action against all dissent inside Saudi Arabia Nayef has also jailed human rights activists, including the flogging of a blogger critical of the government. The defense minister Prince Mohamed bin Salman, is a son of King Salman. King Salman was defense minister till he succeeded his half-brother Abdullah. Ali al-Naimi continues as Oil minister, a position he has held for decades. Saudi Arabia established a panel in 2006 to work with future kings after King Salman to appoint an heir to the throne. Even with the appointment of Nayef, a grandson of Saudi Arabia's founder, Abdulaziz ibn Saud, as deputy crown prince, the leadership of the country remains within a small number of princes of the royal family. Under the Obama administration the relations between U.S. and Saudi Arabia have become strained with president Obama's failure to intervene in Syria. The Saudi have pursued their own policies since then, in first Bahrain and then Egypt the Saudis supported the monarchy and the military respectively to maintain power in the face of the Arab Spring. The danger is that Saudi policies may be contrary to the U.S. position supporting freely elected governments and basic rights, particularly when it comes to suppression of all dissent including peaceful dissent and normal criticism of government, and yet with the rise of Islamic State the U.S. puts itself inadvertently behind these very policies. The Saudis would say this has happened because U.S. president Obama failed to support the effort for freedom in Syria and a transition in Libya and Iraq (with the added complication of Maliki's sectarian policies), creating a war torn neighborhood in which the Saudis had to act on their own. These are the hidden costs of the policy of the U.S. president for the U.S. and for the Middle East- more sectarianism with Shiites and Sunnis openly in conflict, reversal of hard won gains in Iraq, reversal of the Arab Spring except in Tunisia, war torn Libya and Iraq- with a withdrawal that never truly happened because it required a firmly guided transition period of support in the region with lower cost and involvement of an extended period leaving no room for reversal of gains. It leaves both the Saudis and the U.S. in a more precarious position than a decade ago....
