Small Party Gains Clout in Canada
Wall Street Journal 04/27/2011
The elections in 2011 give the Conservatives under Harper a clear majority in parliament. Another change is the emergence of the New Democrats (NDP) as the main opposition party in parliament. The Conservatives won 40% of the vote, gaining seats in Ontario because of the split of the left-of-centre vote between the NDP and the Liberals. Harper plans to govern in the way the Conservatives did when they were a minority party, and plans no major changes.

U.S. deployment of radar in Israel and Qatar as it tightens sanctions on Iran in 2012-2013. The situation in 2015 as Iranian backed Houthi rebels advance into the southern port city of Aden in Yemen, and the combined U.S. and Saudi air strikes and control of airspace in Yemen. Aden on the Persian Gulf is close to the sea lanes in which a large amount of the world's oil moves to Europe, the U.S. and Asia from Saudi Arabia, UAE, and Kuwait.

Obama's proposal will invest $12 billion in savings from the federal education lending programs into community colleges. The idea is to expand graduation rates by about 5 million with certificate progras of 6months to ayear that would train people especially the jobless for new jobs in growing fields. Its crucial to meeting the growing mismatch between job requirements of jobs going unfilled and the qualifications of jobless people.

Retraining will be critical to shift workers from downsizing to upsizing industries and fields of work. The danger is that a growing mismatch in qualifications and lack of a crisis mode in retraining efforts will leave large numbers of people permanently unemployed. The shift is ocurring with lightining speed. Would government sharing the initail cost of hiring and retrainng workers help as in the German example and the Harz reforms. See link.

We took a different way to help millions around the world build educated informed mindsets that affects and shapes their lives. For a future that is open, global and digital, with everyone having access to high quality information. We believe in the renewal of America, renewal of Europe, the renewal of India, the rest of Asia, Latin America and Africa. The renewal of our supply chains, health, education, infrastructure, as we rebuild our countries after the pandemic. Literacy and knowledge we believe cannot thrive and grow in a world of web bots, web crawlers, or AI. This requires human curiosity, human learning, and human imagination. We take as inspiration the saying- “One has to be free, and as broad as sky. One has to have a mind that is crystal clear, only then can truth shine in it.” Every contribution whether big or small is precious- in this crisis and ahead.
