China is not experiencing high unemployment in 2012 the way it did in 2009. The lower growth rate of 7-8% is not having an adverse impact on unemployment. This makes it possible for the stimulus this time to be much smaller. There is rising upward pressure on wages. According to the National Bureau of Statistics, CEIC and WSJ, average annual wages at private sector manufacturing companies in current U.S. dollars was up 5% in 2009, 16% in 2010, and 20% in 2011. This is being encouraged by the government as China gradually shifts its economy towards higher domestic consumption and better standards of living for workers. Hon Hai Precision Industry Company added 82,000 workers in China in 2011. Salaries at the Shenzen plant were 2200 yuan or $345 a month in February 2012, an increase of 10%. An April survey by Manpower Group showed that a majority of companies will increase workers or hold employment stable, only 3% of companies will have job cuts. Demographic changes are also playing a part-with fewer people in the 15-19 age range, dropping from 120 million in 2005 to 95 million in 2015, according to UN estimates. The number of migrant workers remains steady at 252 million in 2012, up 4% from 242 million in 2010, according to the Bureau of National Statistics....

Subaru makes 80% of its cars in Japan compared to 21% for Honda. Toyota also makes a larger percentage of its cars in Japan. The swing in exchange rates bringing the yen to 116 to the U.S. dollar is likely to benefit both exporters. Experts expect both companies to launch a product offensive in the U.S. market and and not start a price war with American makers. Subaru sales of Forester and other models surged 18% in 2014 to about 500,000 cars in 2014. Toyota is the largest shareholder of Subaru's parent company Fuji Heavy. Fuji shares have quintupled since Nov. 2012. Subaru has always pursued a strategy of making in Japan to keep high product quality, according to CEO Yoshinaga, with half of its sales coming from the U.S. market. BP's new strategy is to increase wind energy from 2.5 gigawatts in 2019 to 50 gigawatts by 2030, in the next 10 years. It will partner in  offshore wind projects in the U.S. done with Norway's Equinor. It will invest in 50% of leases with Equinor for $1.1 billion. Another $3 billion will be needed to spend on the first of four wind farms planned for New York and Massachusetts in offshore locations. It expects a 10% return on its investment.

Reliance Jio launches a high speed broadband service in India with annual plans for subscribers ranging from $10 to $118 a month for speeds from 100 Mbps to 1 Gbps. The prices are about one tenth of prices in Europe and the U.S. In 2016 mobile network prices dropped after Reliance introduced lower pricing. The new launch provides streaming services using high speed internet. Reliance Jio is taking on telecom companies, as well as streaming platforms. It is now the largest telecom company in India with revenue of $1.6 billion in the quarter ending June 30, 2019.  The free trial offer from Reliance Jio is 100 Mbps connection free, along with Jio apps. There is a 100 Gigabyte quota, with free 40 GB at a time 24 times- a total of 1000GB free. The only charge is a refundable deposit of 2,500 rupees ($35) for the router. Giveaways include high definition or LED television  and 4K setup box. 15 million people have registered for the service. Reliance Jio is aiming for 20 million residential users and 15 million businesses across 1600 towns in India. Reliance playbook is to launch aggressively with low prices and establish a dominance in the market. It did this in 2016 with free trial offer bringing in 100 million customers in the first 6 months. Today Reliance Jio service has 340 million customers who spend 30% more than other operator's such as Airtel and BSNL.   By cutting data prices in India sharply to one tenth of world prices Jio has created a completely different market and one in which there are only 3 or 4 smaller competitors in that space. Bringing down prices for users and enabling India to jump ahead in internet use in ways similar to that of South Korea, Finland, China.   ...

Its growth is during the same period that the smartphone made its entry- the iphone in 2006 and the android phone in 2008. The short form of 140 characters works well on a mobile smartphone. It was much easier to type in the 140 characters into a smartphone than into earlier phones. Its adaptability to the smartphone and the spread of smartphones everywhere gave it tens of millions of users.  Jack Dorsey who founded Twitter tries to develop a longer form through a startup Medium and does not himself believe that the short form provides a medium for thoughtful expression. OECD studies and views of experts show India's current inflexible labor laws hurt manufacturing workers by denying workers the benefits that would come from larger enterprises in a formal economy, and reducing job growth. Labor laws currently in place provide inducement to keep companies small, with less than 100 workers, the threshold at which labor laws on hiring and letting go of employees are enforced. The Modi government is implementing reforms as pilot programs in states where it is running the state government. Rajasthan is being used for this pilot overhaul of labor laws to attract manufacturing investment.The idea is to create competition between states to attract investment as one state gains in employment growth and good jobs.

Chuck Searcy, 79 years, was in the Vietnam War at Khe Sanh in 1968 as an intelligence officer. In 1992 he first sees unexploded ordnance- from US bombing in Vietnam. He has over many years cleared an unbelievable amount of these dangerous devices. 8 million tons of ordnance was dropped near Khe Sanh near the Ho Chi Minh trail from 1965 to 1975. About 100,000 people have died or sustained injuries. Hang Nam and Searcy founded Project Renew in 2001- since then almost a million tons of these explosive devices have been removed and children taught to stay away safely. Norwegian's People's Aid is also doing the project to cut injuries to zero. It operates 180 deminers.

The reason for this is that of the thousands of crops that were known to humankind from its beginnings we are down to about 100 and about 40% of people on the planet rely mainly on 3 crops- rice, wheat and corn. The result is a lack of necessary micro nutrients in today's diet. What we plant, what we eat matters, changes in agriculture have a significant bearing on the quality of our lives, and concern all of us.

The US reached the moon 50 years earlier in 1972 in the Apollo lunar mission. The new launch was done by a vehicle developed by Houston based Intuitive Machines. It is carrying NASA research devices under a $114 million contract. Lunar landings are difficult because of the thin atmosphere and need to slow down rapidly to land. Intuitive Machines spacecraft was brought down to speed of 3 feet per second before landing. It has one week before lunar night makes it inoperable. A similar landing was accomplished recently by an Indian spacecraft by large drops in speed to achieve a stable landing, after an unsuccessful earlier attempt that did not achieve the drop in speed required for landing.

The Vikram lander and the Pragyan rover will separate from the main propulsion craft of Chandrayan 3 to go into circular orbit of the moon and begin a separate journey. to land on the moon August 23, 2023. This will put Vikram rover within 30 kilometres of the moon at the shortest distance and 100 kilometres at the longest distance. The final landing will be attempted by manoeuvres from this orbit by deboosting the craft. The trick will be to get the velocity down at 30 kilometres away to a safe speed for a landing below. Changing the orientation of the craft from horizontal to vertical is part of the manoeuvring planned by ISRO, the Indian Space organization.

China's central banks cuts the reserve requirement ratio, the amount of money banks need to keep at the central bank, by half a percentage point. Banks are required to use the money that is freed up of $100 billion to help heavily indebted companies and small business lacking collateral to get new loans.

This is a response to the Trump tariffs on $100 billion of Chinese goods with a equal response from China and the trade war between China and the U.S., so that the Chinese economy can be bolstered before the impact of the tariffs hurts the economy. In the past China was reluctant to reduce the reserve requirement. Chinese debt soared with local government debt and debt accumulated from the 2008 large stimulus in the financial crisis.

Crude from Canada's Alberta oil sands brings about $65, a large discount from the $115 for Brent crude and the $97 price in the U.S. The increase in U.S. oil output is causing a surplus in the U.S., reducing demand for Canadian crude. The lack of enough pipelines to bring this crude to the U.S. also affects prices. The $50 discount to Brent crude affects Canada's oil revenues and economic growth. Canada's central bank cut the growth rate forecast for 2013 to 2% from 2.3%. This is also likely to weaken Canada's currency.

Experts say Kuroda of the Bank of Japan still has some Finance Ministry DNA, as he is from Japan's Finance Ministry which has pushed for the consumption tax to be increased to 10% in 2015. Even though Kuroda favors aggressive monetary stimulus compared to others in the Finance Ministry, he shares the views of Ministry colleagues on the tax changes. LDP leaders in the Abe cabinet and Abe see the recession with 2 consecutive quarters of declining GDP for the 2nd and 3rd quarters of 2014, as good reason for delaying the next tax increase from the 8% already implemented in 2014 to 10% in 2015. Under Abe's revised plan the tax increase would be postponed till 2017. Abe referred to the different views on the tax increase in his announcement for a snap election in Dec. 2014 for a new mandate to pursue his Abenomics economic policies of Three Arrows. Kuroda for his part downplayed their differences saying fiscal policy was the mandate of the elected government.

Chevron CEO John Watson says the U.S. needs more affordable energy, and this means it needs to find more fossil fuels. It needs more oil gas and coal. He says the U.S. should take advantage of its own fossil fuel resources. People want strong environmental standards, but as Watson puts it, their top most priority is affordable energy which creates economic growth and jobs. He criticizes the Obama administration for not pushing ahead with developing of U.S. offshore oil, because BP's problems were not systemic and industry wide. He calls for dramatically increasing U.S. oil production, and doing this immediately. Worldwide Chevron plans to invest $26 billion for its exploration budget, and plans to drill in Australia, Western Africa, Gulf of Thailand and other locations. Watson points out that the dynamics of oil production are affected by two factors, price and technology. With current prices at over $100 a barrel more oil is accessible. At these prices new technologies can make it possible to use existing older wells to increase production. He cites the example of Bakersfield, where steam flooding is helping get 70 to 80 barrels out of every 100 barrels in the ground, when in the past Chevron could only get 10-20 barrels of oil. Another technology he mentions is hydrofracking for producing large and cheap supplies of natural gas. Chevron acquired Atlas Energy for $3.2 billion in 2010 to enter this market. Watson's overall emphasis is on the U.S. going for affordable energy and affordable conservation that will create economic growth and a better future....
