The New York Times 08/15/2017
The appeal of populist politicians using racist slogans and divisive rhetoric to appeal to those left behind by the capitalism, tech changes, trade and globalization of the last 2 decades, has created a new danger to the prosperity and peace achieved in the 4 decades after World War II. Schieritz shows how this needs to be addressed and the changes already taking place.

Montreal Olympics took a long time to pay off- developed countries have problems too. Athens is an example of a country that suffered badly just following the Olympics, with poor management of public finances, and Greece is a mid tier European economy. It is not about discriminating against developing countries, because developing countries can if they look to show off match their public transportation systems with brand new subways and bullet trains to match those in China, which would get approval from the broad public. For example it would make no sense for India to build $12 billion of Olympic stadiums and related infrastructure, when it could first match China's transportation infrastructure, road building and subway/bullet train building, as well as invest in athletic facilities for every high school in the country. The politicians are sure to be reelected that way, the country get pride in its transportation system, and instead of 4 medals in all India could match Britain and the U.S. in having invested in the same way in sports programs in its high schools and colleges. What is better than that?

About 51% agree it will strengthen the German economy, 45% disagree, the same numbers are seen for whether Germany's services for housing, education and healthcare will be stretched. Over 50% think it will lead to more terrorist incidents. About the same number see the policy favorably in the Green Party as see it unfavorably in the AfD party, the parties on either side of the political spectrum. Overall says DW.com it appears to be balanced for negative and positive sentiment.

Urban liberal moderates such as in the urban centres of Georgia and South Carolina form the basis of a new Democratic party in the South in 2016. Trump's resemblance in rhetoric to Alabama governor George Wallace, immigration now and civil rights then, is creating a new dynamic in the Southern U.S. states with college educated voters in the suburbs, especially women, and some Republican women shifting away from Trump.

NYT report points to the lack of checking on Lochte's account when NBC broadcast the story. The incident and Lochte's story which did not stand up to scrutiny damaged Brazilians perception of the U.S. It showed Brazilians think that Americans are ready to believe the worst about South American countries. Already facing problems with crime and making an effort to combat it, and in the midst of political uncertainty with lack of public approval for the Olympics, this was a failure on the part of some media channels to take this into account in making sure that what was broadcast was correct down to specific details. One newspaper compared the Lochte story to the way the media handled the Trump story, giving the hype and profanity full coverage for its sensational value at a time when news television media is struggling.

Dangers to the global economy from many left behind by the tech and trade changes of the last 2 decades that have benefitted some sectors and groups and hurt others. Turning to populist political appeals those who feel left behind and suffer the effects of a lack of intergenerational mobility could lead the world into a period of protectionism and nationalist upheaval. This would reverse many of the changes that delivered prosperity for the four decades after World War II.

We took a different way to help millions around the world build educated informed mindsets that affects and shapes their lives. For a future that is open, global and digital, with everyone having access to high quality information. We believe in the renewal of America, renewal of Europe, the renewal of India, the rest of Asia, Latin America and Africa. The renewal of our supply chains, health, education, infrastructure, as we rebuild our countries after the pandemic. Literacy and knowledge we believe cannot thrive and grow in a world of web bots, web crawlers, or AI. This requires human curiosity, human learning, and human imagination. We take as inspiration the saying- “One has to be free, and as broad as sky. One has to have a mind that is crystal clear, only then can truth shine in it.” Every contribution whether big or small is precious- in this crisis and ahead.
