Adele's target audience is women 18-44 years who watch shows like "Family Guy." The CD "25" set records selling 3.2 million copies in the first week in the U.S., and 800,000 in the UK, according to Nielsen. This follows a similiar record for the CD "21," which sold 30 million copies. Another hit song is "Hello." Target has provided promotion for the CD but the promotion is not on streaming sites or on social media, a different approach to marketing the music. Radio is seen primarily as promotional media. Adele's fans are buying the music CD's instead of streaming it, out of consideration for the effort put out by Adele in her songs.

Sergio Marchionne, CEO of Fiat-Chrysler told a conference in Michigan -"these are people who did not grow up and become conditioned to doing business in Detroit. " He cited this as one reason the new generation of leaders at the U.S. auto companies had embraced the new fuel efficiency standards. Another point he made that was well received was that "anybody who surrenders 14 years before the date ought not to be in business." He was referring to the 2025 deadline for the new standards. This view was well accepted by the other auto companies and by the UAW workers union, showing the big change that has come about in the U.S. auto industry.

The Dodd-Frank financial overhaul bill passed in July 2010 has a requirement that issuers of mortgage securities hold onto 5% of the risk of mortgages packaged into securities. Regulators were required to to write the rules for certain exempted loans called "qualified residential mortgages" for which the rules do not apply. Kenneth Rosen of the University of California, Berkeley, says the requirement aims at avoiding the catastrophic risk-taking epidemic that caused the financial crisis of 2008. Federal regulators have till December 2010 to write the new rules. But financial trade groups and firms are already pressing their views on what they would like to see exempted from this crucial 5% requirement.

Lahart reminds readers that the Model 3 from Tesla at $35,000, half the price of $70,000 for a basic Model S in 2014, will not be out till 2017. Models for share price targets of over $200 for Tesla assume the car company will sell these models in large numbers, a Barclays model assuming 350,000 of these cars sold by 2020. It is hard to predict the future for gas prices. In the current environment sales of electric vehicles and popular hybrids such as the Toyota Prius are declining. Tesla faces real challenges considering that gas prices though unpredictable face continuing increases in the development of lower cost shale supplies with new technologies in the future.

Pope Francis meets Bosnia's three presidents in a Council, with each president rotating in office every 8 months. He also addresses a crowd of 65,000 in Sarajevo. Pope Francis told the crowd: " In a world unfortunately rent by conflicts, this land can become a message, attesting that it is possible to live together side by side." A council of Interracial Dialogue to bring together different clerics is working well, says the Vatican's ambassador Luigi Pezzuto. At the level of politics divisions remain as political leaders still promote ethnic nationalism. But overall the Dayton Accords negotiated by Richard Holbrooke of the U.S. are working well. The economy struggles with 50% unemployment and 60% of the workers dependent on the government.

Microsoft has done poorly in anticipating and developing products for the internet and mobile devices. On the enterprise side the server and tools business has done well. Microsoft's Server And Tools business made operating profit of $8.2 billion in the year ending June 2013, up 13% from the prior year. Office 365 sold on a subscription basis to accomodate the shift to cloud computing, and other cloud products are expected to make up for decline in Windows revenues with decline in PC sales. Satya Nadella, who ran the Server and Tools business from 2011 till he was shifted to head the cloud computing effort in the reorganization of 2013, is a candidate for the CEO position.

Gisele Freund's photographic account of how a world changes, the world of her childhood at the turn of the century Berlin (she was born in 1908) and then after her return to Berlin in 1957 before the wall went up. This was an unfamiliar world to her. Her pictures are at the Willy Brandt Haus exhibition in Berlin, and at the Ephraim Palais for the pictures from 1957 and 1962. In the subsequent 50 years the Berlin Wall was to go up and come down, bringing more change and a new Berlin different from that in the late fifties, and a even more different Germany. A story of change told in photographs of Berlin.

Ways to increase transparency in government spending by showing on the internet a host of different measures of how the government is doing in achieving the goals set in prudent and effective spending to shore up the economy and create jobs, and help the unemployed. Jeanne Whalen on the Two Speed Economy in the US September 2025- diverging paths of low and high income Americans. With the new administration in 2025 priorities shift to immigration and what to do about 14 million illegal migrants from Latin America and other places, war on fentanyl and drug trafficking gangs with hundreds of thousands of lives lost to fentanyl and drugs in the US, crime and safety which includes the unprecedented illegal movement of drug trafficking in the Nation, and to a bold posture on using US advantages of its huge market to get European Union, Japan, South Korea, and China to level the playing field on trade bring jobs home. The Biden administration had already conceded to DJT's approach in its one term presidency by shifting on uncontrolled illegal migration but not fast enough, by not removing DJT's tariffs, and failing to take an aggressive posture on fentanyl and drug trafficking. Of the DJT plan US has tariff based revenues of 10--15% for all countries imports into US can that it redirect to groups to soften any effects of tariffs. DJT administration oil transition policy of stretching out the transition to give middle class and lower classes cost of living relief was also accepted by the Biden administration and is now the policy of Democrat run California state government.  The US economy was slowing in 2024 under the Biden administration. What has changed in 2025 is that the US stock markets are responding to steps taken by the DJT Republican administration to lower the cost of doing business by softening regulations, and giving US business the upper hand in different industries, and rebuilding the manufacturing sector with calls for EU and Japan/South Korea to invest more in the US as a quid pro quo for market access. This has led to increase in the value of market portfolios of the income earners above 250,000, or 10% of American households. As this happens the process of trade renegotiation has introduced some uncertainty in 2025 and businesses are looking for more clarity before increasing investment and slowing job hiring which hurts younger people entering the job market and lower income Americans. Were things better under Biden? Government Covid assistance and payouts in the early years 2020-2021 helped lower income workers, as this faded and the cost of living autos, housing increased sharply under Biden in 2022-2024 the situation deteriorated. The situation today is similar to the situation in 2024 with the difference in 2025 that inflation is coming down just as government help is receding. And added factor is the DJT administration plan to tackle head on the increasing cost of Medicaid to about $1 trillion by adding new requirements and reducing subsidies. The federal workforce had a disproportionate share of black workers and the policy changes to reduce the federal workforce have increased black unemployment from 6.1% under Biden in August 2024 to 7.5 % a year later. Hispanics have seen slight improvement in unemployment to 5.3% in 2025, and the middle class incomes also have held up and are holding steady. Meantime Bloomberg points out that one third of people in the top 10% are living paycheck by paycheck because of high cost of housing, university education for children, and inflation.     ...

The Volcker rule is named after former chairman of the Federal Reserve, now 82 year old Paul Volcker. In its complete form it would ban banks from investing in trading activities. But with Treasury Secretary Geithner and economic advisor Summers being part of the team that supported deregulation in banking, the Volcker rule was put in a diluted form in the proposed financial reform bill. Only after it was supported by financial leaders with long years of experience, such as John Bogle, Nicholas Brady and William Donaldson, and with active participation by Volcker, did the Volcker rule in a modified form get the support of Congress and the White House. What grade does it get from Paul Volcker? A B not even a B+ says Volcker. Volcker regrets his earlier silence on this issue. His view is that there is a sense of nervousness about the long term, and this is justified. He says a lot will depend on a 10 member regulatory council that is created by the bill, and all depends on how tough and vigilant it is on a day to day basis with the banks. Analysts share Volcker's concern about "the certain circularity in this businesss," where things are going well for some time followed by another crisis. Volcker's concern is that the bill doesn't prevent bank's from getting into activities such as investing in hedge funds and other similiar activities....

Peter Orszag's role in the healthcare debate and the formulation of health care policy proposals. One proposal of Orszag, who heads the Congressional Budget Office, is to set up a new agency with powers to cut spending and implement changes in Medicare. Says Orszag, "one of the reasons we have such disjointed and skewed incentives is that we have an excessively political process." At a recent meeting with House Democrats, one Congresswoman said her top priority is winning higher payments for oxygen suppliers, and Orszag was taken aback. For years officials have been trying to cut payments to oxygen and medical equipment suppliers, which are said to be inflated. When a new competitive bidding process was set to take effect last year, industry supporters in Congress were able to delay the plan, and these supporters are still fighting to block changes says the WSJ. Here is a 40 year old Orszag, with degrees from Princeton and London School of Economics, who got his early experience in the Clinton adminstration at age 24. He then followed this with a number of policy oriented jobs, ending with appointment to head CBO in 2007. And he faces the whole system of Congressmen from both parties beholden to interests in the healthcare industry, who provide the donations for them to finance their election campaigns. Dan Eggen describes this in the Washington Post, 7/21/2009. Max Baucus of Montana, and to some extent Grassley of Iowa, are senators from both parties who Eggen points out are beholden to the healthcare industry because of large donations they receive from the interests in the healthcare industry. These interests want to see their payments system protected. The further escalation in health care costs, which would make the whole healthcare system unaffordable even as it delivers poor results, can only be prevented by making cost control an exercize that is not influenced by healthcare industry donations. Jackie Calmes describes the huge hurdles in achieving a deficit neutral move to universal health care in the U.S. in the NYT 6/26/2009. See the link. The exchange between Grassley and Orszag on the issue of the $177 billion in savings needed from the payments to health insurers under the Medicare managed care plans- which allow seniors to obtain Medicare coverage outside the government run program -went as follows. These are dubbed overpayments by outside experts and efforts have been made to cut them in Congress. When Mr Grassley raised concerns about the impact of such cuts in a hearing, -and Grassley has opposed the cut for this overpayment to insurers- Orszag responded saying: "I very firmly believe that capitalism is not founded on excessively high subsidies to private firms. This is what this system delivers right now." ...

China's GDP growth accelerated slightly to 6.9 percent in the 1st quarter of 2017, after five consecutive quarters of GDP growth at 6.7-6.8%, according to government data. This reflected larger use of steel in the construction industry and more mortgages issued by the state controlled banking sector. Government officials say productivity is improving helping GDP growth, with closing of less efficient manufacturing plants. Industrial production increased 7.6% in March 2017, according to the National Bureau of Statistics. The government is trying to control higher lending and reduce the backlog of bad loans at banks. Higher growth helps to reduce the bad loans at banks from the earlier period after 2008 financial crisis, improving financial stability.

Ukraine's general election in March 2019 comes at a time of very low confidence in government. Only 9% have confidence in the government dropping from the 24% at the time of the 2014 protests. The problem is mainly corruption with the Wold Bank pointing out that politically connected firms control about 20% of the revenue and 25% of the assets. The major candidates Ms Tymoshenko a former president, and Mr. Poroshenko current president have about 18% support. A comedian with a television show in its third year called "Servant of the People" has about 25% support, and is leading in the polls. Lack of political experience was not an issue. The hope raised five years ago have not been realized as Ukraine suffers from crony capitalism and corruption. The war in the east has affected Ukraine's economy. Since 2013 average wages have fallen 20% to $320 a month and gas prices have gone up 8 times during a period of the conflict with Russia. The 2014 protests led to the fall of a Russian backed government, Russia taking over Crimea, and the war in the east with separatist rebels. Mr. Poroshenko's government has failed to move quickly to tackle major problems in the economy. ...

China is not experiencing high unemployment in 2012 the way it did in 2009. The lower growth rate of 7-8% is not having an adverse impact on unemployment. This makes it possible for the stimulus this time to be much smaller. There is rising upward pressure on wages. According to the National Bureau of Statistics, CEIC and WSJ, average annual wages at private sector manufacturing companies in current U.S. dollars was up 5% in 2009, 16% in 2010, and 20% in 2011. This is being encouraged by the government as China gradually shifts its economy towards higher domestic consumption and better standards of living for workers. Hon Hai Precision Industry Company added 82,000 workers in China in 2011. Salaries at the Shenzen plant were 2200 yuan or $345 a month in February 2012, an increase of 10%. An April survey by Manpower Group showed that a majority of companies will increase workers or hold employment stable, only 3% of companies will have job cuts. Demographic changes are also playing a part-with fewer people in the 15-19 age range, dropping from 120 million in 2005 to 95 million in 2015, according to UN estimates. The number of migrant workers remains steady at 252 million in 2012, up 4% from 242 million in 2010, according to the Bureau of National Statistics....

Capital spending by oil companies after you take out the 10% inflation in the cost of most drilling epuipment and people isn't growing by much. In 2007 spending on exploration and production totaled $270 billion, increasing by 10% over 2006 with most of the increase in cost coming from higher costs of everything from rigs to labor and oil field services. And oil companies are pasing back huge earnings to shareholders in the form of buybacks and share purchases, the top 5 western oil companies will have spent an estimated $179 billion in share buybacks in the last 4 years. And the the companies are not able to replace reserves that are used up each year in production. As aresult they are basically shrinking and becoming smaller in the whole oil picture. Only in 2008 is the spending picking up a bit but only by a small amount after one takes out inflation, and that because there may be more confidence that oil prices will hold up better in the long run to justify the higher costs of finding oil....

The ABX Index which tracks subprime bonds is showing signs of recovery. The prices for representative parts of the subprime bond market have doubled from a low of 30 cents on the dollar to about 60 cents. This is happening as investors and some companies are taking on more risk and finding lenders. This is helping push up prices of commodities, junk bonds and stocks. The larger yields on the subprime bonds are attracting investors. Non-agency bonds- bonds not backed by Fannie and Freddie- yield between 5% to 7%, above the 4% yield on high quality corporate bonds and the 3.5% yield on U.S. government bonds. Demand for these bonds is growing. Companies that invest in these sub-prime bonds such as MFA Financial were buying $100 million of these bonds in 2010, and have increased this to $300 million a month recently. MFA Financial is able to do so because it can find funding from lenders who are now not as worried about the risks of these subprime bonds. Another development in this market is the offer of AIG to buy back apool of bonds that the Federal Reserve had taken over from AIG during the financial crisis of 2008. AIG offered to pay $15.7 billion for the pool of bonds with a face value of $30 billion. The Fed cited a high level of interest from investors and rejected that offer. The Fed will now let investors bid for these bonds to maximize its gain on these bonds. In another development even conservative investors such as four large life insurers are looking at buying these subprime bonds. Scott Robinson, a senior vice president of Moody's Investors Service, says the high levels of capital available is leading to a re-risking of balance sheets, even though it is not back to the old days yet. Considerable risks still remain in the housing market according to Nouriel Roubini and other experts....

Pressure is increasing in Congress as some Democrats are calling for sanctions against the Saudi government. The Saudi position is that they will increase production only if the refineries demand it. Odd position because refineries are not going to increase demand as long as they have to pay higer prices for crude oil and their margins are shrinking from higher oil prices- this is true of the independent refiners like Valero and Tesoro.

How Toyota's labor cost advantage is disappearing. By late 2009 Toyota's Georgetown Kentucky plant, 23 years old, where most workers are at the top of the pay scale could be the highest labor cost auto factory in the USA. A large number of Toyota workers are at the top wage of $25 an hour. Detroit's 4 year deal with the UAW gives them a 2 tier wage contract where lower paid workers earn only $26 an hour including benefits according to the Center for Automotive Research. At GM in 2011 its estimated the number of workers will be down by 6500 to 68000 workers, and one third of them earning the lower wage. How is Toyota responding? New hires will take 5 years not 3 to get to the top wage. And starting pay at a plant in Mississippi will be lower than the traditional $16. Its also cutting health care costs by setting up medical centers on site as at its San Antonio factory.
