Efforts were made in 2005 to increase flights beyond the restriction to 7 states- originally the law restricted flights to 4 states. Southwest has been fighting this law passed as an amendment to an aviation law by U.S. House Speaker Jim Wright in 1979. Its intention was giving American Airlines the incentive to build a giant hub at the new 1974 Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport.

By 2013 Beijing was seeing air quality extremes of 700 micrograms per square meter, with 500 routine. WHO standards show 300 micrograms as dangerous for health. Pressure to push for GDP growth is intense for local officals and the environmental agency lacked powers for enforcement. The car population was doubling every few years in this period 2000-2012.

And go fast forward to 2009 when Hyundai sees August 2009 sales 47% higher than August 2008 sales, Hyundai being the only large car company to increase sales by end of 2009 in the American market.
