Apple has 42% of the smartphone market in the U.S. A larger iphone with 5.5 inch screen could generate a meaningful upgrade cycle, say analysts, increasing Apple's market share by 11%. The larger device is especially important in emerging markets where the iphone serves as the main computing device. Samsung currently dominates the larger screen market with 34%, followed by Lenovo. The shift to larger screens is significant- market research firm Canalys estimates that 40% of global smartphone shipments were larger than 5 inches in the 2nd quarter of 2014, up from 21% the prior year quarter. This is the one area in which Samsung holds an advantage.

Blackberry employees reached a peak of over 17,000 in 2011 as the company continued to hire through 2009-2011. It was about 8000 in 2008 the first year of the financial crisis and recession and doubled in 3 years. The employee count is at 12,700 in 2013. The company was hit hard by the introduction of smartphones by Samsung and Apple. Blackberry now plans huge cuts of about 40% by the end of 2013. This shows how quickly the winds can change in the tech business field where disruptions for existing technology are the norm. A niche in the corporate business field was not sufficient to keep Blackberry from shrinking rapidly as businesses shifted to the new smartphone technology from rivals. Failure to anticipate new technologies can lead to irreversible losses. Blackberry shows the way down can be just as fast as the way up and a lost year or a wrong decision can be the difference between success and irreversible failure.

Issues about how many more jobs are supported by Apple beyond the 47,000 employees in the U.S. Estimates of job creation in China and overseas through supplier networks for iPads, iPhones and other products are as high as 700,000. Apple says it has "created or supported" 514,000 jobs in the U.S. Experts say it is hard to say how many jobs are supported. Of the jobs Apple counted in this number, the consulting group doing the estimate included 257,000 jobs at companies such as Corning that makes the glass for the iPhone, UPS, and a Samsung plant in Texas. The number was generated using a formula of the federal government's Bureau of Economic Analysis and how much money Apple spent on goods and services in the U.S. An additional 210,000 jobs were generated by companies making apps for Apple devices. The consulting company estimated that 45% of the 466,000 app related jobs in the U.S. -using the estimate of such jobs from TechNet- were for Apple apps. Apple released these figures on its website as criticism from the industry and outside mounts about whether Apple is doing enough for jobs in the U.S. Intel's Andy Grove is one of the industry executives who has pointed out that there is much scaling up at home that U.S. companies need to do....

Huawei shows a strong first half 2015 for smartphone sales. Smartphones priced over $300 sales for Huawei were up 70% in the first half of 2015. Huawei plans to launch a Nexus phone with Google Inc. in 2015. Smarphone shipments were 48.2 million units for the first half 2015. By comparison Xiaomi sold 34.7 million smartphones in the first half of 2015. Huawei has gained brand name recognition and passed Xiaomi in sales. Of the 48.2 million smartphones sales of Huawei 20 million were in markets outside China, increasing competition for Apple and Samsung. Huawei now has 7.9% market share worldwide for the 2nd quarter 2015, according to TrendForce, in 3rd place after Samsung and Apple. In revenue terms Huawei has nearly doubled sales revenue in smartphones because of more phones in the higher price range, going from the $3.87 billion in first half 2014 to $7.23 billion in first half 2015. This strategy is evident in Europe where Huawei has invested in brand recognition by sponsoring soccer teams. In just one quarter from the 1st quarter 2015 to the second quarter Huawei has doubled market share in Western Europe from 3% to 6% in smartphones, according to research firm Canalys. ...

Corporate customers now make up about 20% of RIM Blackberry customers, down from 71% in 2007 when the Apple iPhone was introduced. This means competing with Apple and Samsung in the consumer phone market. Business users bring more revenue per customer. A looming threat to RIM is the BYOD trend with companies allowing employees to bring their own phones and giving access to corporate data networks. The smaller iPads like the Apple Mini 5S iPad are gaining in popularity. Apple has 32% of the iPad market. Samsung is gaining market share moving up to 18% in 2013 second quarter, up from 7.6% the prior year quarter, according to IDC. Apple is making the new iPad Air thinner and lighter from 1.4 pounds to 1 pound. The iPad Mini gets the high-resolution Retina display and goes for $400, $70 higher than the previous mini ipad which will now go for $300. Both iPads get faster processing chips, the A7 and the M7, and better antenna wifi connections. The new products will go on sale in Nov. 2013. Gartner estimates smartphone shipments at 1 billion and tablet shipments at 184 million for 2013. Tablets are expected to outsell PC's in 2015, according to IDC. The growth is rapid paced, with 2012 sales at 120 million tablets, increasing from about 17 million in 2010 when the iPad was first introduced.

CEO John Chen's srategy in 2014 is to get more revenues from the higher margin mobile security business and with software service sales. As software service sales are uncertain, and with the threat from Apple in mobile security features, Chen is also introducing the Passport phone with features such as better reading of text for business users. Chen proved his turnaround expertise at Sybase with small targeted acquisitions and he is seen as using these skills at Blackberry. His plan is to breakeven on cashflow by 2015. Samsung and Apple have taken away most of the consumer market from Blackberry and what little remains is in emerging markets. Chen showed a small quarterly profit to send Blackberry shares up. Shares are now at $10.89 increasing 68% after Chen assumed the CEO position in November 2013.

Peers says Amazon's strategy is flawed and the new Kindle Fire tablet will cut into Amazon's already low margins. He points to the analysis of components going into tablets by IHS iSuppli, which found materials costs alone come up to over $262. For companies making hardware such as Samsung and Sony the tablets have to be priced higher. By pricing the Kindle Fire at $199, Amazon CEO Bezos, may be counting on the tablet boosting Amazon's retail business, the digital music, and the streaming of videos, and bookstores. Surveys show the tablet being used mainly for web surfing or email, and less for watching video or reading books. Amazon has the Kindle e-reader which is a better option for readers because of the price. And video sources include other suppliers including YouTube and Netflix. Apple still has the edge in resources- $76 billion in cash and investments in mid 2011- to support lower prices on newer versions of the iPad with more capabilities and design features. Apple with its supply chain experience may be able to obtain better costs from component suppliers than Amazon for future price reductions. Sony and Samsung also bring the manufacturing knowhow and expertise to do this, with Sony's added capabilities in designing devices. Google Inc. has made an agreement to acquire Motorola Mobility Holdings Inc. for $12.5 billion in cash. This deal puts Google in direct competition with Apple Inc., RIM, and Nokia. Google is taking on new risks with this acquisition. It is known as a software company, and the acquisition puts it in an area with which it has little experience- manufacturing and managing sales of devices working with retailers. It also risks making partners- such as Samsung, HTC Corp., Sony Ericsson, and LG Electronics that make mobile phones- into rivals. Forrester Research points out that this could lead to these companies hedging their bets and also making mobile phones that use the Microsoft operating system. Google considered a similiar plan for entry into the PC market after it developed the Chrome operating system but decided against it, opting instead to work with PC manufacturers Acer Inc and Samsung. The deal brings with it a large number of patents Motorola holds in mobile technology.

HP's Apotheker emphasized in an earnings call "the tablet effect is real and sales of the TouchPad are not meeting our expectations. The velocity of change in the personal device marketplace continues to increase as the competitive landscape is growing increasingly more complex especially around the personal computing area." By the tablet effect Apotheker means the Apple iPad. The tablet is becoming popular but not the other tablets from Samsung, HP and other makers. Lenovo's acquisition of Motorola Mobility from Google for $2.91 billion in January 2014. Google paid $12.5 billion for Motorola Mobility in 2011. The Moto X model has not sold well in competition with Apple and Samsung smartphones. Google will retain 15,000 of 17,000 patents acquired as part of the Motorola acquisition, patents worth billions of dollars and helping it defend its Android mobile operating system. Google sold Motorola Home which made setup boxes to Arris in 2012 for $2.35 billion. Motorola Mobility had $2.9 billion in cash at the time of the acquisition. In addition Google is retaining a research group led by Regina Dugan working on new technologies.

Nokia has only 4.3% of the smartphone sales worldwide. The smartphone market in Brazil is shifting to the $100-$300 range. Because of higher import taxes and other costs, including paying for the full price upfront, buyers pay about $260 for a Moto G whereas a iPhone 6 would cost $1060. The focus is on the better value for the Moto G compared to the Samsung Galaxy and Apple iPhone in developing countries, where new middle class consumers such as in Brazil may make between $5400 to $27,000 a year. Apple faces large hurdles in China with models made locally by Huawei and other Chinese companies that offer similar features at a price about one third less. Chinese buyers are also looking for products that are made locally by Chinese companies. As a result Apple's market share in China has declined from 9% in 2015 to 7% in 2016. The future for Apple does not look bright apart from a core group of Apple fans that look for new product launches every year. Social media comments cited here show the comments about the iPhone 7 that say buyers should not pay $159 for Air Pods, the cordless earbuds. With the economic situation changing buyers are careful to pay so much for the iPhone 7, when it looks so much like the iPhone 6. In India Apple iPhone price are much higher and remain a significant hurdle for price conscious buyers.

Kazuo Hirai becomes the new CEO of Sony, succeeding Howard Stringer. Hirai faces some tough decisions at Sony, as the company's position as a pioneer in electronics has been eroded by Apple, and sales of product hardware have been eroded by Samsung Electronics. Hirai says his strategic goal is to get the 168,000 employees of Sony to place getting the user experience right first before anything else. And that simply being a great producer of hardware products isn't enough for Sony. Hirai's experience is in turning around the Playstation videogaming business. To this he brought an unconventional style. He was educated in the U.S. and Canada as the son of an expatriate Japanese banker, and in Japan he went to the American School where he founded its Audiovisual Club. His first job at CBS/Sony Inc. in Japan was as a translator for bands such as the Beastie Boys and Journey during the visits of these bands to Japan.

This condensed adaptation of the book by McNish and Silcoff on the collapse of Blackberry with the launch of the iPhone, tells a story of complacency at Research in Motion. Supreme Court Justice Brandeis once said that complacency was like all the seven sins rolled into one. In the smartphone industry the results were lethal. RIM founders Lazaridis and Balsillie responded to the iPhone launch believing this would not affect Blackberry. The founders rationalized that what would determine success in the business was security, battery life, ability to type, and using less capacity so as not to strain networks, areas in which RIM was strong and on which it had built its market presence. Design, using mobile to offer broad access to internet content, and the touch screen, were not seen as changing the very nature of the phone market. During the summer of 2007 many users shifted to the iPhone, and it cultivated a cult following using strategies Apple had honed on earlier product launches, reaching 1 million in sales. RIM was completely unprepared and could offer Verizon Communications a prototype called the Storm, which was launched hastily with product glitches still remaining. This happened in November 2008 and turned out to be complete disaster- initial sales were great selling 1 million units in 2 months of 2008, but reversed when almost all of the units were returned because the browser was slow and the clickable screen did not respond well. Nokia, another competitor, is also caught unawares sticking to its formula of success, when all the rules were being rewritten by Apple by showing what the new possiblilities were with the right technology in what one could do with a smartphone. Blackberry introduced a smartphone in 2012 by putting together a patchwork of licensed technologies. By this time Apple, Samsung and other competitors had captured significant market share, and the smartphone flopped. The successor Z10 also flopped in 2013. Nokia faced another problem- the inability to convert R&D, at times larger than Google and Apple, into new products, and the failure of management to grasp the potential of new technologies. According to a former employee, Nokia management turned down a internet ready phone with touch screen developed by its engineers in 2004....

He had expected Jobs to stay on as  chairman to continue leading the company even after the illness. Cook thought Jobs would "bounce" back. The death of Jobs was a big blow for Cook. Huawei is No. 1 in China and No.3 in Europe in smartphones. For the second quarter of 2018 its smartphone sales surpassed Apple to make it No.2 in the world. Its market share is 13.9% of the world market for the last 12 months, the same as Apple. Huawei was close to making a deal with AT&T to sell smartphones in the U.S. but has run into problems with U.S. regulators. The Justice Department is investigating whether Huawei violated U.S. sanctions on Iran, and the Defense Department is removing Huawei phones and gear from U.S. bases. Most of Huawei's sales gains come from Samsung and other vendors of the Android system smartphones.

The main difference is price Apple phones average cost is $848, Huawei is at $269.
