Union Berlin applied for full capacity if it only admitted vaccinated and recovered spectators in the game against Hertha Berlin this week and got it approved. It is not good enough to say German Football League Association has 94% of its players, coaches and staff vaccinated.  With the alarming situation at German hospitals, many breakthrough infections, crowding in the stadiums is not responsible behaviour of Bundesliga clubs and fans. Tesla suffered from production issues in 2017 and CEO Musk was not his usual upbeat self.  In early 2018 Musk is back to his usual style predicting big things for Tesla. Just after his company Space Exploration Technologies sent a powerful rocket with a Tesla car into space,Musk predicted making one million vehicles a year in 2020. In 3 months he says a Tesla will cross the U.S. He says Tesla will now be able to make 5000 cars a week of the Model 3.

Another of his predictions is that he will revolutionize production systems and leap over existing car companies. Analysts asked Musk if the Toyota Production System had not already achieved that, Musk says "we don't think so." This report points to changing moods of Musk and periods when he feels high and low, and changing according to the unrelenting stress he finds himself in or indulges in.

Vanguard's Chief Investment Officer Greg Davis, says there is a 40% chance of a recession in the U.S. by 2020, and that the prospects for the stock market have worsened quite a bit. U.S. stocks are expected to return 3.9% down from the earlier prediction of 8% in 2013 over 10 years annualized. In Europe the stocks are expected to return 6.5% down from 8.7% earlier prediction in 2013.

Bonds and cash offer safer alternatives with attractive rates.

Vanguard's 10 year annualized returns for a diversified portfolio of U.S. bonds is up from 1.7% in 2013 to 3.3%, for Treasury bonds 3.0%, and for international bonds up from 1.8% to 2.9%. Money market funds also offer relatively attractive returns as safe haven on 10 year annualized basis of 2.9% up from 1.5%. For the lower risk money market funds are attractive to investors for making adjustments.

The U.S. trade dispute with China takes a new turn after tit for tat tariffs, with the U.S. president Trump claiming that China was interfering in the U.S. midterm elections. This plays into the narrative in China that the U.S. does not want to see China's ascent as a global power. President Trump and Trade Representative Lighthizer have singled out "Made In China 2025," China's plans for tech leadership as a serious issue for the U.S. President Trump made his claim in a speech at the United Nations, saying that he was "the first president ever to challenge China on trade."

Many of China's tariffs on U.S. exports are targeted at agricultural products such as soyabeans and corn in heavily pro-Trump states, and in rural areas where the Republican party has a significant base.

Currently Asian-Americans make up 62% of students at top high schools in New York. Mayor Blasio aims to give 20% of the seats to students who almost reach the qualifying scores on an entrance exam for Stuyvesant and seven other specialized high schools. Under Blasio's plan Discovery program for economically disadvantaged students would get 800 of the 4000 specialized high school seats for ninth graders in fall 2020 up from 250. 

Another view is presented by Parenting While Black organization of low income parents and children, who say that more important is to improve the quality of education for the city's 1.1 million students and start at the early grades. They see the high school debate for these 7 specialized schools as taking attention from the real problem to focus on s small sliver of students. The mass of students, the vast majority, they say are left to dangle in the wind.

Negotiators for Climate Change talks meeting in Katowice, Poland helped develop a rule book to support efforts made for the Paris Accords. The U.S. joined the European Union, Canada and China in putting forward compromise language. 

The question of setting up a carbon market was put off for the future.

On the aid to developing countries to reduce emissions in their generation of power the commitment of $100 billion by 2020 from Article 9 of the Paris Accords was seen by some countries including the U.S. as too high. China does not contribute, and only the European Union with Germany doubling its contribution took the lead. That climate fund has so far raised $10 billion.

The U.S. point of view was that no country should sacrifice economic prosperity and energy security for environmental sustainabililty. Yet the U.S. has participating in developing the rule book for climate change efforts stemming from the Paris Accords.

Barney Roney Analysis of England's 3-0 defeat in three matches in Australia in December 2025. Roney writes in the BBC Analysis that there was a basic lack of tension and discipline, of not doing the homework needed and not recognizing the need for homework when playing a side like Australia. Australia without Cummins, Smith and other injured players- made it work with Mitchell Starc and Travis Head in the bowling and batting attack. Roney does not fault Stokes as much as he does McCallum the coach of the England team. Other reports show Stokes and the England cricket team spending time at the beach for days that suggested a lack of discipline. England did not trust the process it trusted the captain's instincts and brave comments, Australia trusted the process and this helped it improve as the game went on even without key players.

The southern U.S. states may be losing their advantage with midwestern states as costs come down in the midwest. An index developed by Moody's Analytics which shows a mix of labor, energy, taxes and real estate, is at 96% of the national average for the midwest compared to 95% for the southern states. Costs in the western states have declined the from 107% of the national average in 2004 to 101% in 2011, according to Moody's, but still remain high compared to the midwest. The northeastern region still has the highest costs. The 2007-2009 recession was severe in the midwestern states and helped keep wages down in Michigan, Indiana and Ohio. The costs for employers for wages and benefits was $27.66 in these midwestern states compared to $31.00, the gap once $7.00 is now down to $3.34. One of the factors helping the midwest is that energy costs are lower there than in the south and other parts of the country. Another factor working in favor of midwestern states is the increased tax incentives offered in these states to compete for manufacturing investment....

The Buick Regal is turning out to be just the car for going after younger buyers, and going after Gen Y buyers, buyers who have appeared so elusive for GM. It handles like European cars in its ride, and this reviewer compares it to a Peugeot. It was almost an accident in the way it was developed. It started as the development of a global, midsize front-drive platform at GM's Opel division in Russelsheim, Germany in 2004. At the time it was to be the next generation Saturn Aura for the US, but with Saturn closed down, it was renamed Buick. In Germany its called Opel Insignia. Over the short run Europe presents some opportunities after Germany's Merz gets the constitutional brake on spending removed and plans $1 trillion in spending on infrastructure and defense. The US is busy with immigration and other challenges, and tariffs are part of the effort to stop fentanyl on Canada, Mexico and China. This poses uncertainty for business in 2025 which should gain clarity as most tariffs are meant to ensure a level playing field and India, China, EU, Mexico, Canada cannot argue with the idea of we charge them what they charge us, as reciprocal tariffs, as fairness in trade. These countries have reason to cooperate as it is basically fair trade DJT administration is after. Japan cooperated so history shows it can be done and Lighthizer was Deputy Trade Representative under Reagan when he got the Japanese to cooperate and be fair. His deputy is Jameson, now US Trade Representative in 2025. They are no ideologues, just fed up with the way things are and US carrying the trade imbalances and shipping manufacturing overseas that hurts ordinary Americans. US exceptionalism is seen as prevailing after a period in which American companies gain a footing in a level playing field and unfair advantages China, EU other nations had are corrected for investors in the UK, Australia, India and many European countries. About 20% of people over 65 years work today compared to 15% 35 years ago, says Pew Research, and of these working 65 year olds two thirds are working full time compared to half in 1987. They are wealthier having median net worth of $410,000 today compared to $282,000 in 2010 much of the 45% gain made in the last 2 years from rising house prices and stock investments. This will increase the deficit. Biden administration had kept the deficit in control and reduced it by making offsetting adjustments when investment in certain areas such as childcare was done. The childcare tax credit is important for American families. Action is needed to increase the supply of housing. About two thirds of China is urban people but only 48% have residency rights, meaning about 250 million people are not getting the benefits of schools, pensions and healthcare in cities. Ministry of Human Resources shows only 22% of migrant workers have these benefits.  There are about 67 million Chinese children left behind by their parents in rural areas as they search for jobs in cities. These children do not see their parents often, sometimes not at all in a particular year. They have suffered lack of parental attention and have poorer schooling. In 2024 as some of these children grew up and became migrants themselves they did not want want happened to them happen to their children, and delay having children.  China's government considered rural couples as a good way to makeup for low birthrates. This has been proved not to be the case. China's household registration system is call hukou- it restricts access to healthcare and schools for migrants and discourages migrans who live in factory dorms or other restricted housing arrangements from taking children with them. Rural incomes are less than half of urban $3000 vs $7000 a year. ...

During the year Bill Clinton was president  the US Food and Drug Administration under Acting Commissioner Michael Friedman is reported by the WSJ as opening up American television for a flood of drug advertising that is damaging for the Nation's health leading to overuse of drugs in the US for three decades. 31% of ads on US evening television news programs are from drug brands in 2024. The challenges of immigration with legal vs illegal entry into the US is a topic in some media reporting as the US seeks to do what the US did to tackle out of control illegal migration in 1954 under president Eisenhower. This one from the NYT happens in a small town in Missouri in a pancake and waffle restaurant. Earlier reports in the WSJ showed in 2024 the way Republican areas in small towns in Kansas were making an effort to attract immigrants to meet the need for people in manpower depleted public services. The basic idea of legal vs illegal and all the consequences on a national scale in the US and in Europe when illegal migrations gets out of control and creates divided communities, and strain on public funds and resources, is one that has been seen for over a decade. In Missouri, in a largely Republican town in the US the friendly nature of American public to immigrants is seen in the way the local community cared for and had genuine respect for the worker at the restaurant. Yet there is also the sense among members of this small community that US law should be respected.   ...

At a meeting of GM engineers and Continental- which manufactured the Cobalt's diagnostic modules on May 15, 2009- the faulty ignition switch defect was confirmed by repeated verification of data from many car crashes. No evidence shows this was shared with senior managers. GM filed for bankruptcy in June 2009, two weeks later, and this could be the reason as the situation could be chaotic in managerial ranks. It was tnot until Oct 29, 2013, when GM officials met with the supplier Delphi that the issue comes up again. Records for the meeting showed clearly the defective switches were made at a Delphi plant from 2004 to late 2006. A part change had led to the defective switch. It is the period between 2009 to 2013 that GM has no answer for, as public opinion increasingly looks to GM for answers on why it took so long to make the recall. At Toyota the footdragging in managerial ranks caused the problems for the recall. At GM the problem simply disappeared at the lower levels as the company went through a bankruptcy and emerged from bankruptcy under new management....

Support for the centre right Moderate Party of Mr. Reinfeldt declined to 23.2% in Sweden's 2014 parliamentary elections. A trade union leader, Mr. Lofven, led the coalition of centre Left parties including the Green Party to a narrow win over the centre right parties, with 43.7% of the vote. Votes to an antiracism and womens issues party Feminist Initiative was expected to go above the 4% needed to enter parliament and provide support to the centre left parties, yet reached 3.1%. The strain on funding for schools and other public spending, as a result of immigration support spending on Middle East refugees by the Reinfeldt government, led to a siphoning off of significant voter support to a far right anti-immigration Sweden Democrats Party which doubled its vote to 13%.

As many as 2 million votes in the 2014 Afghanistan elections are called into question. This is 2 million out of a total of 8 million. In the last election it is estimated 1.3 million fradulent votes were made for Hamid Karzai. This time it is said security officials, government officials and others worked together to get as many as 2 million votes for Asraf Ghani, who Karzai supports. This is happening even as the Taliban are increasing attacks in the country and the Americans are withdrawing. It shows that instead of a withdrawal that the Obama administration promised their appears to be a situation that is no different from that of the Bush administration, where American lives were lost and sacrifices made without even the most basic results- no assurance that if the government collapses from strains within and outside, Taliban and terrorism could not happen again as is hapening in Iraq.

The Labor Department reports that there is no U.S. productivity growth in the 4th quarter of 2014 over the prior year. U.S. productivity growth is about 1.3% for the period since 2009, showing a weak expansion. Job gains of 295,000 in February 2015 show an improving jobs picture, yet wage gains are tepid. This is partly due to slack in the labor market not reflected in the official unemployment rate of 5.5% for Feb. 2015, with a large number of part time workers who do not have full time work. The low productivity growth is another reason for low wage gains in this economic recovery. Economic growth is also weak with economists estimating GDP growth for the 1st quarter 2015 at 1.5% annualized. GDP growth is in the 2-2.5% growth range since 2009. Hourly wages are up less than 2% since 2009, with hourly wage growth in Feb. 2015 at 2% over the prior year. Weak business investment is part of the reason for the sluggish economic growth. Macroeconomic Advisors estimates the capital investment for equipment software and buildings is seeing growth of only 0.3% in the last decade, much lower than in the last forty years. With most of the gains from the internet technology advances already made there is less prospect of a sudden increase in productivity....

The U.S. government's National Climate Assessment report in November 2017 says observational evidence proves that human action is the main driver for climate change. It warns of sea levels rise as high as 8 feet by the year 2100. It shows damage from climate change that is already happening from a rise in the U.S. by 1.8 degree Fahrenheit of global warming since 1900. Trump has announced withdrawal by the U.S. from the Paris Climate Change Agreement that would cut U.S. greenhouse gas emissions by 26-28 percent by 2025 compared to 2005 levels. The Trump administration is relaxing rules by the EPA that would have contributed to the goals of the Paris Agreement.

The Sheshinski committee recommends increasing the government's share of revenue from oil and gas finds in Israel to between 52% and 62% from 30% now.
