Sweden Takes a Left Turn After 8 Years of Rightist Rule

Support for the centre right Moderate Party of Mr. Reinfeldt declined to 23.2% in Sweden's 2014 parliamentary elections. A trade union leader, Mr. Lofven, led the coalition of centre Left parties including the Green Party to a narrow win over the centre right parties, with 43.7% of the vote. Votes to an antiracism and womens issues party Feminist Initiative was expected to go above the 4% needed to enter parliament and provide support to the centre left parties, yet reached 3.1%. The strain on funding for schools and other public spending, as a result of immigration support spending on Middle East refugees by the Reinfeldt government, led to a siphoning off of significant voter support to a far right anti-immigration Sweden Democrats Party which doubled its vote to 13%.

Sweden's centre right government loses the 2014 election with 39.3% of the vote, the Social Democrats allied to the Green Party win about 43.7% of the vote. A far right party calling for 90% cuts in immigrant integration funding doubles its vote. Immigrants mainly from war torn Syria, Iraq and Somalia. The increased voting for the far right comes mainly from the centre right government party. The women's party gets 3.1% of the vote. The Social Democrats argued that the centre right government had pursued policies that were leading to a deterioration in services, education and infrastructure through its austerity programs. Sweden's centre right government had supported the policies of Germany's Angela Merkel for tight control on spending.

The immigration debate in Norway

The effects of immigration on Norwegian life and society. About 550,000 immigrants entered the country from 1995- 2010. Half of these immigrants are white and from Poland and Sweden. Norway has also given asylum to the poorest immigrants from places like Eritrea. And there are immigrants from Pakistan who came in the 1970's when Norway needed immigrant labor. About 11% of 4.9 million people are immigrants, but the concentration of immigrants in certain neighborhoods creates the fear of immigration among some Norwegians. Immigrants concentrate in the poorer neighborhoods of east Oslo. Because Nordic society has never experienced this before, this multiculturalism become a serious issue.
