Harris told women that she knew that it was a difficult conversation to have, but one had to face reality, showing what it means to get a police report in such a situation. As former district attorney in California, and as California Attorney General she was fighting fro women's rights back then, involved in legal battles about women's reproductive health and abortion, including a multistate case on the Supreme Court Hobby Lobby case in 2014. She was raised Harris says by a mother who was a breast cancer researcher, and conversations at the kitchen table were also about women's reproductive health and hormones. Harris says in this interview that this stuff should not exist in the shadows, when it happens in this way it is women who suffer. On many issues that involve women Harris is uniquely qualified. For instance the wars in Ukraine and in Gaza and Israel have a huge impact on women and children, and Kamala Harris is taking on the role of bringing and end to the conflict in Gaza by participating in Biden's talk with the prime minister of Israel. Harris has prepared for this role more than it appears and she is able to talk to women in a way that is rare for an elected official says this report, and also to the people of this country on issues that determine their future. On the Special Counsel's report Harris can also talk about this in a way that is direct, sincere and from experience. She said about the prosecutor's report : "The way that the president's demeanor in that report was characterized -could not be more wrong on the facts, and clearly was politically motivated." She called the comment on the president's age "gratuitous" and described the role of a prosecutor as "requiring a higher level of integrity."    ...

He says what matters is how he practices for the sport. After 12 surgeries and a injury this year Ashish says he knows what it is to be under the knife. People will say many things if he plays well and even more things if he does badly. Ashish says what matters in the end is how he prepares for the sport, like any sport it is the preparation and long hours of practice that make a difference. What he does and how he plays the selection board and the captain of the team know very well, which is why he was invited to play again for India. Ashish can bowl fast comparable to younger bowlers, and has played for India as long as other veteran players M.S. Dhoni and Harbhajan Singh. He conserves his energy by not playing 5 day Test matches. He can then give 100 percent to the 24 or more balls he may bowl in a game. He bowls at about 140 km per hour. In many ways Ashish has the right attitude for sports. Leaving aside the praise or criticism and concentrating on what is ahead. Not even thinking too far ahead. Sometimes it is just the next game, this year, which needs all the attention and can make all the difference. The vote in the Senate was 67 to 27 to move forward with the $95 billion aid package to Ukraine and Israel. A new study published in JAMA, Journal of the American Medical Association, shows that quality of diet is critical to lose weight. It is also an intuitively sensible idea. The more you cut back on bad foods- lots of processed high sugar and high calories in processed or packaged foods- the better off you are. The more fruits and vegetable take its place, the more likely you are to lose some of the weight. It is also a sustainable strategy as the vegetables and fruits have other positive effects making it possible to permanently shift to better lifestyles as part of an overall cultural change that includes exercizing regularly. Nutrition experts at the Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy at Tufts University say this is the way to go. The strange thing is that such simple and basic ideas as restoring the proper role of healthy foods in our diet require such detailed studies. Packaged and processed foods of today are part of an industry that did not exist a hundred years ago. Common sense and intuitive ideas about what is good for us can lead us to the right action, including an awareness that food eating habits have simply deteriorated and become corrupted in today's busy world. ...

And he points to a Pakistani view outside of the military which is not obsessed with India and would like to get down to the basics- electricity and infrastructure, better lives, and a safer neighborhood. In this perspective the Pakistani military and the Americans both do not understand the basic needs of the large majority of Pakistanis yearning for a better life. Contrast this with the Thomas Friedman piece which complains on the other side, with a note of innocence, of becoming a sucker in this game of a two-faced Pakistani military and intelligence services using the Americans for their own game, supporting the Americans and the insurgents at the same time. Such unpopular action is sometimes the role of government like the action to rebuild the trading system and bring restraint to runaway spending on benefits, and can be overcome with a strong economy and capital investment for growth in future years. Another problem for the DJT administration is in the messaging to get the message across when some of the president's actions can be inconsistent or appear inconsistent. Add to this the distractions such as international diplomacy on Ukraine that take the president's time. Yet changes were needed in the international trading system and tough action is sometimes necessary when most countries and groupings, China EU, Canada, Mexico, can game the system their benefit to the detriment of the American people and jobs/communities at home. On the Big Beautiful Bill at the rate of growth in funding for Medicaid to $909 billion in 2024 from $2 billion at its inception under LBJ in the 1960's some restraint on spending would ultimately keep such help flowing where it is needed over the long haul. ...

The legenday hitter and catcher of the New York Yankees Yogi Berra (1925-2015) dies in New Jersey at the age of 90. His many popular sayings, including the one " It aint over, till its over," and "When you come to a fork in the road, take it." He was born in St. Louis to a family of immigrants from Northern Italy. In his best year with the Yankees in 1950 he had 124 runs batted in and 116 runs scored. He was MVP in 1951, 1954 and 1955, and was part of the team that was the rival for the Brooklyn Dodgers between 1947 to 1956. As a catcher he played Game 5 of the 1956 World Series, the only no-hitter in World Series history, which was played against Brooklyn Dodgers. He became a loved figure in American life with his wit and sayings, his skills in the game, and his integrity. Between 1963-1974 he served as manager and coach for the Yankees and the New York Mets, and later coached for the Houston Astros in the eighties.

Columbia University president resigned and Katrina Armstrong was made interim president. Columbia lost $400 million in federal funding of the $1 billion it gets each year. Twenty years after Japanese prime minister Koizumi visited Pyongyang in 2004, Japan's PM Kishida plans to talk to North Korean leader Kim. Koizumi had talks with Kim's father in 2004. The effort is to reduce tensions in the region with elections approaching in Japan, India, and the US in 2024, and to bolster the sense that Japan can manage its role in the region. The Europeans are doing the same as the French and the British are taking a bigger role in Europe during Ukraine conflict. After the Gaza conflict, the Houthis in Red Sea maritime channels, there is a sense that reducing tensions proactively is a better approach rather than wait for things to take their own course in directions that are not good for the world, or taking rigid ideological or other motivated positions that serve no constructive purpose and exacerbate tensions. Gandhiji used to say "tit for tat makes the whole world blind." It is not idealistic to say that but very practical and useful because if you do that you end up with situations where you lose leverage and ability to take positive action and come up with better outcomes, than if you let some unforeseen event or some events by other actors without proper motives to intervene to your serious and the world's detriment. ...

Jason Zweig cites the St. Petersburg Paradox in questioning how much someone should pay for a bet on Facebook shares at the high valuation set for this inital public offering. This riddle asks how much would one pay for playing a game in which one gets $1 for winning the first toss of a coin and the game ends, or $2 if the coin comes up heads the second time, or $4 the next time, $8 next and keep doing this , the payment doubles each time. The point is that the payoff is infinite because at each toss the probability is 50% and 12.5% for the next toss, and one could get to the 30th toss or the 60th toss, with payoff in hundreds of millions. People also could be out of the game when the heads come up and not see the later supposed gains. Because of this experts say the most people should pay for playing is $20. The Facebook offering has infinite potential of this sort, but the reality is that for businesses of this type one can only see a couple of years ahead in terms of growth, with large uncertainties ahead about growth beyond that point. Charles Lee, professor of accounting at Stanford Business School, and former head of equity research at Barclays Global Investors, says its hard to see further than two or three years for this type of company. Another problem is pointed out by Prof. Ritter of the University of Florida. He says the valuation is so high today that even if Facebook followed Google's growth and had a total market value of $190 billon that Google has today in 10 years, the annual return would be around 6.8%....

The American Medical Association came out against the public option in President Obama's health care reform plan. The outpouring of comments on this article show that public opinion today seriously questions the actions of the AMA, and think that this is not in the best interests of the nation. Its the kind of outpouring of criticism that GM's old management received from readers fed up with the management of the Detroit automakers, before the GM bankruptcy. Out of the 26 most read or recommended comments on this article shown on the link to the article in the NYT, 25 were strongly critical of the AMA's position on health care, none were in favor, and one was critical of the insurance companies. The 25 that were strongly critical had a total of reader recommends of 6539 readers when they were totalled up for all 25 comments. Some of these comments were strongly critical and explained at length why. Some were from doctors who disassociated themselves from the AMA. One suggested that the American College of Physicians also represented doctors, and the AMA represented only one group of mostly older doctors who are against any change. The financial crisis and the election of a new President, the changes in the country since the last failed reform effort in 1993, the new mood of the country as it changes to its more frugal past, a new generation of doctors and a new generation of young people coming to the fore, all may mean that things are no longer the same, and actually very different. Are the people running the AMA, like the people who were running GM a short time ago, not able to see how they are perceived by the public? ...

It took 4 hours and fifty minutes for Rafa Nadal to win the U.S. Open Tennis Championships against newcomer Danil Medvedev. At 33 years Nadal had to overcome hurdles physical and mental. He won the first two sets 7-5, 6-3, before losing the next 2 sets 5-7, 4-6. It took all the hard work he does on the court practicing his strokes to help him win the fifth deciding set 6-4.

Nadal says of the match- "The last three hours of the match were very, very, intense, no? Very tough mentally and physically too. The crowd were amazing, all these facts that make the moment super special, no? unforgettable moment."

The crowd of 24,000 boisterous fans were with Nadal, particularly after Medvedev's brat like statements the week before, but were also carried away by the intensity of the game and the skills of the younger player.

Barney Roney Analysis of England's 3-0 defeat in three matches in Australia in December 2025. Roney writes in the BBC Analysis that there was a basic lack of tension and discipline, of not doing the homework needed and not recognizing the need for homework when playing a side like Australia. Australia without Cummins, Smith and other injured players- made it work with Mitchell Starc and Travis Head in the bowling and batting attack. Roney does not fault Stokes as much as he does McCallum the coach of the England team. Other reports show Stokes and the England cricket team spending time at the beach for days that suggested a lack of discipline. England did not trust the process it trusted the captain's instincts and brave comments, Australia trusted the process and this helped it improve as the game went on even without key players.

Its interesting that Kotter, the management expert, writes about this same thing for managers trying to get their people excited and motivated to actually do something and push vigorously to see it done. Agassi suggests living in the present and avoiding future tripping thinking and solving problems for the future which may not exist. Agassi describes his daily routine. He says pickleball is a great way to exercise without thinking of exercise especially for over 50's. Agassi works for 3-4 hours a day and then plans his daily life around this. He loves the way Alcaraz, Sinner and Medvedev have brought new life into tennis as an exciting game to watch. Agassi talks about marraige- he is married to Steffani Graf, who also played tennis in the top ten. He says know yourself and you can't come into a relationship needing the other to be complete.  For breakfast he has oatmeal with protein or some granola and fruit. Less well known is that Andre Agassi is from Las Vegas, and has a thoughtful autobiography "Open" that is remarkably honest about his survival in the competitive world of tennis after many struggles with parental pressure to win. Yet he comes through having made his own choices. He started the preparatory Agassi Tennis academy for underprivileged children. When Sinner won the Australian Open yesterday he thanked his parents for not putting pressure on him for letting him try different sports. ...

The failure of Nintendo's new handheld 3DS video game device to win market acceptance. Sales dropped to 710,000 in the last 3 months from 3.6 million the prior quarter. Nintendo has now made a big price cut from $250 to $170. The entire videogame industy is going through a transformation where a closed platform like Nintendo's is facing obsolescence. Today any device with a screen and an internet connection can work for videogaming. Companies such as Zynga have Facebook games such as "Farmville" and "Cityville." Mobile and social games are $1 or $5 and often free when they have advertising within the games. They can be readily acccessed instantly by downloading, Contrast that with Nintendo games for 3DS which can sell for $30 to $40. Nintendo has sold over 87 million Wiis and 147 million DS devices. But the sales are dropping precipitiously. Wii sales dropped to 1.56 million in the most recent quarter compared to 3.04 million in the prior year, and DS sales fell to 1.44 million from 3.15 million, according to Nintendo. As a whole game sales in retail stores including hardware and software are declining down to $995 million in June 2011 from $1.111 billion for the same month prior year, according to NPD Group. Microsoft continues to see an increase in its Xbox gaming business- with a 30% increase in sales to $1.49 billion for the last quarter for the division with the Xbox business. One reason is that this is a group of hard core gaming customers who prefer shooting and sports games including the use of a camera device called Kinect where body movements are used by players. In that manner this business is insulated from the overall trend where game developers are shifting to new technologies and developemnts such as Facebook and iPhone. Electronic Arts is focussing on the fast growth for popular games on the iPad....

France's foreign minister, Laurent Fabius, has sounded a warning about a nuclear agreement with Iran in the past. In 2013 he warned the West not to get drawn into a "fools game." Leading to Mr. Trump's appeal with working class families and disdain for traditional Republican policies that secured him the presidency in 2018 by defeating Hillary Clinton. The changes with president Biden's focus on workers and families are happening also in the European Union. Scholz and the Greens in Germany, Macron in France with potentially Melenchon as prime minister, and similar changes in Denmark and other EU countries suggest that there is a renewed focus on infrastructure, rebuilding manufacturing and supply chain renewal, rebuilding incomes and lives of workers and families, in Europe and the US. ...
