The slowing growth in China is reducing growth and depreciating the currencies of iron ore producing countries Brazil and Australia. China makes 50% of the world's steel and imports 1.2 billion tons of iron ore traded annually. Australia exports 80% of its iron ore to China valued at $67 billion in 2013. Brazil sends 50% of production to China. For the first time in 15 years China's steel use declined 0.3% to 500 million tons in the Jan-Aug. 2014 period. The mining companies have invested heavily in ports and railroads for expanded production. BHP CEO Mackenzie says the strategy is to maximize production because reducing production increases costs on a unit basis. The result is a decline in price from $135 a ton at the beginning of 2014 to $69.80 on Nov. 28, 2014. Prices could decline to the $50 range in 2015, according to Citigroup analysts, because of an estimated iron ore surplus of 300 million tons by 2018. As China expands recycling of older cars and washing machines to produce steel this will reduce future iron ore demand in China. JP Morgan forecast for Australia reduces GDP growth to 2.8% from 3.3% for 2015, and Brazil reduced its forecast for 2015 to 0.9% from 1.8%....

This report in the Economist says that the days of double digit increases in the car market are a thing of the past. Future increases will be in the mid to high single digits, according to McKinsey consulting firm. China's economy is slowing and official estimates of GDP growth of 7% are described by experts as overstated, with real estimate of growth for the 1st quarter of 2015 by Citi, Conference Board and Capital Economics all below 5%, as reported in the WSJ. A sign of the change in the market is the need for higher use of incentives. The growth in the used car market offers buyers other alternatives. The new plants being added will increase production by 5.3 million light vehicles a year and come online in 2015 and 2016, this is in addition to the 22.8 million in sales in 2014. Average Chinese auto plants operate at 70% of capacity and the added volume will lower capacity utilization further. China's local automobile companies, with the exception of companies in joint ventures with foreign companies, have failed to gain customer loyalty. Many of these companies may be absorbed by foreign car makers or shut down as the industry consolidates. Foreign companies will find doing business less attractive as sales decline. ...

Estimates of the contraction of the Iranian economy in 2012-2013 show GDP declines for 2012 and 2013. The IMF estimate of the economic contraction for fiscal year ending March 2013 was 6%. Former president Ahmadinejad's policies led to hyper inflation, a sharp depreciation of the currency rial, similiar to the situation in Venezuela under Chavez and Maduro. To get a sense of the the scale of the damage to the Iranian economy- a decline of 39% in vehicle production in 2012 with the lack of essental parts and decline in demand, oil production declining to about 700,000 barrels at one point in 2013 from over 2 million barrels in the period before 2012. This was a result of lack of access to needed technology and parts as sanctions began to take a toll, and because of the decline in exports from the enforcing of sanctions by 2013. By June 2014 the newly elected leader Rouhani had made economic recovery the to priority- inflation had been cut in half and the rial currency had recovered from the lows in 2012-2013, and oil production increased to 1.2 million barrels. The IMF forecast is for GDP growth of 2.35% for 2015. The auto maker Khodro Industrial Group is keen on increasing production and partnering again with Renault, which left the country with the sanctions. Iran's oil producing company estimate is that about 700,000 increase in production could be achieved quickly with the lifting of sanctions for oil technology and parts. Rouhani has put together a large group of business leaders inside Iran and overseas to improve Iran's image with investors and attract foreign investment....

Because not much money is being spent the velocity of money as measured by the ratio of GDP to M2 money supply is at a low not seen since 1991, in the 4th quarter 2008. If GDP shrinks in the 1st quarter 2009 at 6% annualized rate as expected, then M2 velocity will be the lowest since 1987, even with the accelerating growth of money supply growth. The M2 money supply, a measure of money in the system including time deposits has grown by $767 billion or 10% in the past year accoding to the Fed. Money that is not being spent is building up in amountain of cash reserves. Banks have about $679 billion in reserves of cash, and this matches the $653 billion by which money supply has increased during that time as aresult of the Fed's repeated infusions. This suggests that inflation is not the risk that it would appear to be, even with the governments huge spending plans and the Fed's efforts to add so much liquidity. Says one economist, the money multiplier is just not working and is broken. Will consumers start borrowing and spending again. Not as long as they are so overstretched and with job losses mounting. And will banks continue to cautious and slow to led? Most likely as long as the bank's balnce sheets are broken, and the bad assets remain on them. This may explain last weeks efforts by the Fed to buy Treasury bonds upto $300 billion and more efforts to get credit flowing again by buying up mortgage securities and raising the ceiling to $1.25 trillion for purchases. cash...

The slowing of China's growth with GDP growth for 2012 estimated by the government at 7.5%. Growth was 8.1% in the first quarter of 2012, with expected decline in the second quarter. In response China's National Development and Reform Commission, which executes economic policy in China, has accelerated the approval of major infrastructure investments starting in April. This includes hydropower stations, clean energy projects, 4 new airports and renovations of 3 large steel plants, a subway in Nanjing. The investments total about $150 billion. Another stimulus comes from investments by local governments with central government support, including highways, sewage treatment plants, and $55 billion investment by state corporations in the Chongqing municipality. To revive the auto industry a cash-for-clunkers program is also planned, and this may include cash incentives for home appliance purchases. In addition to this the State Council headed by premier Wen Biao is making plans for 20 major projects in 7 strategic industries, from advanced equipment manufacturing to energy conservation. The result is a Stimulus that will be much smaller than the $585 Stimulus spending of 2008-2009, with a measured response compared to the earlier splurge in spending. Experts say the Communist party sees this as ensuring a smoother transition to a new president and prime minister in 2012, with added credibility for the nations growth and for the leadership of the Communist party in the modernization drive. ...

The Third Biennial Update Report at COP26 Glasgow shows where India stands on renewable energy, solar, forest cover enhancement, and improving carbon intensity in its climate change efforts so far.  For instance a 17 times increase in solar in the last 7 years to 45 gigawatts, with target of 450 gigawatts by 2030. In carbon intensity 24% improvement between 2005-2014. Scientist Bhatt presented the report for India's Environment Ministry saying India represented 17% of the world's population and historically 4% of world carbon emissions, today 5%. Improvements of carbon intensity per unit of GDP planned under Mod's plan for 2030 require 45% reduction in carbon intensity by 2030. This suggests the trajectory of China will be avoided where highly polluting parts of industries such as steel and cement were left unregulated and lacking strict supervision leading to rampant pollution in 2000-2021. Mr. Birol, head of the Renewables Energy Agency said on BBC's "Hard Talk" program recently that if you combine all of China's steel and cement factory carbon emissions, that alone would equal the total sum of carbon emissions of the whole European Union today. A quick look at a graph of global carbon emissions trajectories shows three fold increase of China's carbon emissions from about 4 billion tons to 12 billion tons between 2000-2021, the period and the explosion of carbon that is the one activity that singlehandedly created the crisis of climate change today. By comparison US remains at about 6 billion tons of emissions, and EU, US, Britain Japan show flat trajectories. Business, globalization interests, US and European financial interests, and local governments in China that financed this explosion in steel and cement ignored the implications of so much pollution in so short a time through unregulated activities- writing a chapter of failure with most of the world's people left to bear the results of such a failure.  It is this that India plans to correct with a 45% improvement in carbon intensity per unit of GDP by 2030, and nothing could be more important in the government's plan than this. New technologies will be key for this. Modi and India realize how vulnerable India is to floods, drought stricken areas, shortages of water, and climate extremes, and see these plans as critical for healthy growth that benefits all of India's people and regions, It is a long term vision like no other today and sets a new direction for all developing regions of Asia, Latin America and Africa. As India leads the way in new technologies and ambitious programs such as one solar, one world, one grid, these technologies will also break open new paths for the regions of the world that need this most from Brazil to Indonesia.  China too suffers from the impact of so much pollution. Even as early as 2010 reports showed the higher pollution had lowered life expectancy in northern region of China compared to its southern region. Yet the most polluting factories were not removed and only recently is the activity being conducted seriously leading to the shortages of fuel from so much overexpansion in the boom years, and making adjustments done abruptly today more difficult.   ...

The Washington Post cites researchers at the University of Chicago about the kind of economy Biden achieved by Jan 2025-

“Under the Biden administration, real GDP rose 12.6 percent, rightly cheered ... as ‘a historically robust expansion’ that repeatedly defied forecasts. Since the pandemic, economic growth in the US has far outpaced that of our peer nations. Business investment is up; unemployment is low.”

As a new DJT administration takes over in the US it has the potential of carrying on the task of rebuilding infrastructure, and strengthening the economy,  tackling cost of living, income indisparities, with greater involvement of the private sector, in the same way that some of the priorities of the first DJT administration such as infrastructure and bringing jobs home in manufacturing were taken up by the Biden administration with participation of the US government in rebuilding the economy.

Carrie Lam's withdrawal announcement for the extradition bill that sparked the protests comes after 3 months of protests in which Lam could have started conversations and dialogue with protesters. This is now not likely to end the protests as a number of issues have emerged including social, political and economic issues and police action. For China it also raises questions of relations with major trading nations such as the U.S. With the stalled talks on trade and tariffs, and a slowing economy, the last thing China needs is for this to overshadow the bigger issues of economic growth and continued development of its economic potential. Lam's withdrawal decision is received with much skepticism in Hong Kong as this report in the Guardian shows. Coming earlier it could have some meaning, there is now a wider gap in the perceptions of both sides. Beijing sees itself a s wary of Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Macau, as Mr. Xi points out, and the protestors in Hong Kong not sure of Beijing's intentions. ...

After years of monetary easing under former Fed chairman Ben Bernanke to boost the economy since the 2008 financial crisis, the Fed plans to modestly increase rates in December 2015. The broad measure of unemployment including part-timers and discouraged workers dropping out has fallen from a high of 17.1% to 9.9%. The economic recovery is still slow and inflation below 2% for a long period, letting the the Fed set a very gradual trajectory for raising rates to accomodate downward pressures on the economy. GDP growth is lower than in previous recoveries, and after tax incomes adjusted for inflation up 1.8% in this recovery compared to 3.3% in the three previous recoveries.

A critical flaw in the IMF and EU's plan for Greece is the optimistic forecasts for Greece. The IMF forecast was for the Greek economy to decline by 2.6% of GDP in 2011, yet estimates now are for a decline of 6.8%. As a result even with a second bailout for $130 billion the situation is likely to deteriorate as the economy contracts faster than the IMF predicts and the debt continues to remain unsustainable. With no pro-growth policy in place the situation provides little hope for the Greeks. Kenneth Rogoff, a Harvard economics professor, says he is astounded by the short term psychology that gives financial markets hope that something will work.

Koizumi who supported nuclear power for Japan has now come out in opposition to dependence on nuclear power. Kato presents the idea of a post-growth phase for Japan in which nuclear power is phased out, as is being done in Germany. The idea being that Japan does not strive for a return of an earlier period of growth but looks to creating a new future that is different from the past.

This editorial in the WSJ points out that it is not enough for a country to vote to leave the European Union. It must be ready to leave the EU, as it says happened in the case of Greece. Greece was willing to leave the EU but not capable of going it alone. This is true of Britain as Britain cannot bear the economic cost of losing the advantages of trade and commerce without serious consequences. Mrs. May's deal for a permanent customs union, a trade deal that mimics Norway's one with the EU, is not fully supported within her own party. Preserving relations with Ireland and Northern Ireland are important and some Brexit Leave leaders have alienated the Irish.  As the WSJ puts it GDP growth obscured regional disparities and shortfalls in productivity and innovation- so that businesses are right to warn of the consequnces of a hasty Brexit or a no deal Brexit. In short, Britain cannot afford to lose the trade benefits of EU membership. This should have been known from the beginning on all sides to avoid what has been a 2 year long fiasco which will affect Britain's future. A strategic error has been made by Brexit supporters in not thinking things through before launching out into the referendum. ...

Brazil's unemployment rate dropped slightly in 2013 to 5.4% from 5.5% in 2012, according to Brazil's Institute for Geography and Statistics. Fewer people are entering the workforce as Brazil's population ages, which has helped keep labor markets tight even with a low rate of job creation. Industrial jobs have declined as a share of overall employment after the recent consumer boom in Brazil. More service jobs are being created than industrial jobs as a result of a stronger currency. GDP growth was less than 3%, according to the statistics agency. Higher inflation constrains growth and the central bank increased the interest rate by 0.5% to 10.5%. Wages have kept up with inflation as the average monthly wage increased by 1.8% after inflation to 1,929 reais ($798) for the ninth year. Land reforms in China to improve rural incomes and increase agricultural production with larger farms to keep food price inflation down two key goals in today's China. And both long neglected in the headlong rush to industrialize and urban centred modernization which left a huge gap which now must be fixed that gap in incomes for the rural 700 million peopr in the countryside who have seen their incomes stagnat and the rural -urban gap widen with farmer protest against corrupt officials seizing land for factories exacerbating the situation for years. Only the 10-12% a year growth has kept the situation under some control as rural folk could depend on income from migrant labor or the young women who left the countryside to work in cities where factories for exports turned out goods for western markets. With this market in serious trouble in debt burdened western societies China may be looking at growth of half the previous rate down to 6%,and so this is move to change the focus to building a bigger domestic market through raising rural incomes as well as urban incomes and shift China's focus to the domestic and Asian markets like India and other Asian countries....

Roshe gives an independent view of whats happening in the economy and sees a recession, sticky inflation that will last a long time for the US and the world economy in a semirecession for a long time. Roche of independent Strategy consultancy in London does not see the Fed's actions to increase liquidity having any effect in resolving the issues of solvency which have resulted from the overleveraging of brokerage and mortgage firms on Wall Street, only exacerbating the effects of a weaker dollar and higher inflation over the longer term. He points out that hedge fund and broker balance sheets or nondeposit financial institutions (NDFI's) half the size of banks in the USA and a quarter of the size of banks in Europe have their assets and liabilities financed by repurchase agreements. They lend and borrow against the collateral of assets that are marked to market, which means that they can borrow more and easily in a rising market cycle and can borrow less and with more difficulty in a falling market cycle. With the contracting cycle in place now they are facing insolvency issues. This may have been delayed till now because of investment banking profits and having credit lines for the duration of a contract. Till now investmet banking profits gave them leverage over lenders who made money from fees in investment banking. Now the banks hurt by writedowns of loans in mortgages and other areas are likely to tighten lending and call in their loans. What the Fed's actions will do is delay things a bit but not prevent a credit contraction and fall in asset prices. David Roche was Global Strategist for Morgan Stanley before starting Independent Strategy to provide fresh thinking and new insights on financial markets. His estimate is that reduction in available credit for corporate investment in technology, R&D and factories as a result of contraction in the financial system will require reducing corporate debt ultimately by 11-12 %. This will generate a loss of 5% points of real GDP growth for the US and put into a recession. For Europe he estimates loss of 2% points of real GDP growth. Global credit losses of $1.4 trillion would cause a contraction in world GDP of 2.5 percentage points or half the current rate of growth. For the global economy he sees a gray dull world of semi-recession and stickly inflation that will last a long time even without any major policy blunders. If this is original thinking and he is right then the Fed, the IMF, the Council of Economic Advisors, and general thinking on Wall Street that sees a short recession lasting several quarters may be in for a big shock....

This report in the Hindusthan Times compares the relatively few comments from India's Ministry of External Affairs on the Dokalam standoff between India and China, and the frequent and patriotic comments from the state media in China. India took a firm position on the sensitive border area road construction by China, because the Doklam plateau is the narrow area in the mountains that allows entry to India's northern plains. India and China announced disengagement following the incident. This report points out that the resolution happened on the eve of a BRICS meeting in China. Indian prime minister Modi's absence from the BRIC's meeting would have been an embarrassment for China, says the Hindusthan Times. The resolution would have happened after both sides realized that the border issue escalation was not in the interest of China and India as both sides face more important issues- India in the focus on modernization and China on sustaining growth and maintaining trade relations with the U.S. Trump administration at a time when the debt to GDP ratios exceed by some estimates 280% and trade has become a sensitive issue in America's midwestern states. ...

Even though China has one of the largest stimulus programs, it hopes to keep its budget deficit down to 3% in 2009. But this does not correctly reflect the true cost of the stimulus program, as much of that cost is taken on at the local government level. Of the stimulus two year $585 billion investment program only one fourth is reflected in China's formal budget. Stimulus projects get quick approval and a partial financial contribution from Beijing with the local governments having to come up with the biggest share of the funds. As China's tax system channels most revenues to Beijing, the local governments are seeing an explosion of debt. These are liabilities not on the books but having the indirect support of Beijing. Without this local government debt China's total state debt is closer to 35% of GDP than the 18% shown in official numbers. See graph. And the government budget deficit will be about 4% of GDP in 2009 according to Deutsche Bank economist Jun Ma. Even before the stimulus local government debt was large, at about four trillion yuan, equivalent to 16.5%of GDP, as estimated by the Research Institute for Fisal Science, the think tank of China's finance ministry. In the first quarter new loans by state banks for infrastructure projects to government backed companies was 895 billion yuan, or 22%of the national stimulus package. Local corporate bond issues indirectly backed by the local government, totaled 102 billion yuan for Jan-May 2009. UN projections show median age of Chinese citizens will overtake that of Americans in 2020. Yet China's median income is only a quarter of that in the U.S. Life expectancy in China today is 76, very close to that in America. In 1960 a Chinese person born that year had life expectancy of 44 years.  China is aging at the pace of Japan, and a bit slower than South Korea, but wealth per capita was three times higher in South Korea and Japan than China when the aging accelerated. A Chinese woman fertility rate today is 1.6 compared to 4.6 in 1973. A prominent Chinese economist says in a recent report that median age in China in 2050 will be nearly 50 compared to 42 in America and 38 in India. WSJ cites figures showing China will have gone from 9 working age adults per retired person in 2000 to just two by 2050. So how to pay for retirement of all these workers today? Government spending on retirement is a tenth of GDP, about half the level in older wealthier countries, and increase in spending will impact growth. Today this is about 6.2% potential growth rate. It also pushes wages up with a shortage of workers in cities such as Shenzen and X'ian even with the use of new technology and robots in factories.  Solutions are to raise retirement age currently set at 60 years, increasing labor force participation of women as Japan has done, and increasing productivity. China has transferred 10% equity stakes in four state owned financial firms to the national pension fund to shore up its finances as estimates from the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences show it running out of money in 2035. Traditionally children supported families in old age but the one child policy leads to situations where the child is working or in another city. This report in the WSJ gives a detailed profile of Liu He, who as vice premier and top regulator is now a top economic official in charge of the financial system and the industrial sector. The appointment will be confirmed at the annual meeting of China's legislature in March 2018. Liu He is a classmate of Jinping at Beijing's Middle School 101, went to Renmin University for a degree in Industrial Economics, and studied at the Kennedy School of Government, Harvard. As the superregulator and overseeing the central bank, Liu He's team has set the goal of bringing financial risks in the Chinese economy under control in 3 years. This team also setup the 2018 economic blueprint that made "Xi Thought" the guiding principles for running China's economy. Financial risks in China's economy from the high debt to GDP ratio which worsened after the 2008 financial crisis and higher lending practices, are seen as a threat to the economy. Policy now is focused on stabilizing the economy and setting a long term path to slower but sustained growth, so that the entire country can share in the benefits of modernization that the coastal regions and parts of the country in the east have experienced during a period of rapid growth. Even the quashing of term limits for presidentcould be seen in the light of this economic blueprint as financial risks could lead to other serious problems if a stable path for the economy is not set and followed over the next decade. As part of this effort Xi Jinping has focused his efforts on corruption to improve perception of the party in the country. Liu He is the main economic official speaking for Jinping at Davos Forum. Another member of the circle advising Jinping is Wang Quishan, who has helped run the anti-corruption campaign. Both Liu He and Wang are expected to handle the future relationship with the U.S. Liu He's policy ideas are for strengthening the state sector with mega mergers, closing less profitable competitors, reducing industrial overcapacity, and making the remaining companies stronger and more profitable. This includes making firms more efficient, better run and more profitable- in the words of the economic blueprint to make "state capital stronger, better and bigger."   ...

Robert Gordon of Northwestern University shows the optimistic and pessimistic factors in the economy in terms of their contribution to GDP. He says botht he optimists and pessimists ae correct, with the question being the relative strength of the factors. He says the recovery will not be a V shaped recovery , and it will only be half as strong as the recovery of 1983-84, in the range of 3% to 4%, the annualized growth rate between 1982 4th quarter and 1984 4th quarter was 6.4%. Annualized growth according to the Commerce Department was 3.2% in 1st quarter 2010, following 5.6% growth annualized in 4th quarter 2009 In this picture international trade and exports have not played as strong apart as imports continued to rise. Overall personal consumption expenditures held up pretty well and showed +2.55, inventory change +1.57 as companies began to replace IT and other equipment, producers durable equipment and software, federal government +0.11. On the pessimist side residential structures were -0.29, nonresidential structures -0.44, net exports -0.61 showing that exports are not playing the part needed for the economy to recover, and state and local governments are -0.48. The progressively deteriorating situation expected as state and local governments cut back will weigh as aserious negative in this respect says Gordon. And this just as the inventory chnge numbers wind down to a smaller number. Mr. Riady of the Lippo Group says spending is growing to unprecedented levels. About 50 million people in Indonesia are in the middle class out of a population of 250 million- when measured at the level of $3000 per year incomes- and this will grow to 150 million by 2014, according to PT Nomura Indonesia. The view from Asian officials and scholars that it was not the savings glut that originated in Asia that caused the economic crisis in the U.S. The idea of a"savings glut" that caused low rates for along time and set up conditions for a housing bubble was presented by Ben Bernanke in 2005 before he was governor of the Fed. It was considered acontributing factor in the crisis. Mr Panitchpakdi, head of the UN Confreence on Trade and Development says that Asians did not borrow heavily for consumption and Americans did. Consumption levels he says are normal in Asia and average 40% of GDP. Household consumption in China is 36% but thats because growth in investment and exports has been very strong, npot because consumption has been weak. Speaking at the same conference Chinese central bank governor Zhou Xiaochuan sais Chinese consumption needs to rise and saving rate fall but micro factors like regulation played an overwhelming part. We believe in the renewal of America, renewal of Europe, the renewal of India, the rest of Asia, Latin America and Africa. The renewal of our supply chains, health, education, infrastructure, as we rebuild our countries after the pandemic. Literacy and knowledge we believe cannot thrive and grow in a world of web bots, web crawlers, or AI. This requires human curiosity, human learning, and human imagination. We take as inspiration the saying- “One has to be free, and as broad as sky. One has to have a mind that is crystal clear, only then can truth shine in it.” Every contribution whether big or small is precious- in this crisis and ahead.
