Shinichi Sasaki, Toyota Executive Vice President in charge of Quality, the chief Quality officer at Toyota, explained at a press conference that Toyota has a good handle on individual components quality but not enough on the quality of components as they interact in environmental conditions inside the car. Moisture could collect on gas pedals inside the car in certain environmental conditions and cause the car pedal to get depressed and stick. There is a lack of research he said on how how accelerator pedal systems were affected by certain climate conditions and how moisture could collect inside the pedals and cause overacceleration. This caused one of the 2 recalls made by Toyota recently. Total recalls worldwide for faulty pedals and floor mats is now around 8.1 millon units. Mr Sasaki said that Toyota's research has shown that the gas pedal's electronics were not at fault. The fix Toyota has come up with is to ship a part , a shim, a small piece of metal which when inserted into the gas pedal assembly will prevent it from being stuck in a depressed position. Sasaki fears a global hit to Toyota sales especially in the U.S. market....

Audi faced similiar problems of unintended acceleration incidents that Toyota faces today. A "60 Minutes" segment by Ed Bradley in November 1986 showed Audi owners of the Audi 5000 sedan who said the cars suddenly accelerated. That show even showed an Audi 5000 moving on its own which later was shown to be due to an altered transmission for that shot. Even when it was shown in a 1989 government study that blamed driver errors especially because of the close placement of gas and brake pedals. This led to the report's recommendations to move the pedals apart, and install ashift lock mechanism which required a foot on the brake to shift the car into drive. Audi ran newspaper ads showing these findings but consumer fear had set in. It took Audi many years to recover, From 1985 to 1991 Audi U.S. sales dropped 84%, hitting a low of 12,000 annually and not reaching levels from before the crisis till 2000. Audi, a division of Volkswagen, is now expanding in the U.S. but the story has lessons for Toyota. This may explain why Toyota was quick to refute a story in ABC News on the acceleration issue. ...

Chrysler has no new models in its product lineup except for the small Fiat 500 car and some product redesigns like the new 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee. For about 2 years Chrysler has had liitle that is new to show buyers coming into its dealership showrooms. As competitors Ford and GM recovered sales after the 2008 crisis, Chrysler's sales have been dismal. A lot is dependent on how the new Jeep Grand Cherokee is seen by car buyers. Chrysler and Mercedes had essentially redesigned the Grand Cherokee by the time of the bankruptcy filing in April 2009 and Fiat's takeover. So even though it is presented as the new Chrysler, analysts say its not something Fiat's involvement created. What Fiat added is attention to some of the technical details, and working on the marketing aspects so that its off-road and on-road capabilities are presented in the best possible way to attract buyer interest, keeping price as close to sticker as possible. The question now is whether in Chrysler's difficult situation, the American car buyer will respond to the new Cherokee with interest. Sales peaked for the Cherokee at 300,000 in 1999 and dropped to 50,000 in 2009....

China Investment Corporation, China's sovereign wealth fund is expected to issue upto 28 billion in bonds to help recapitalize China's state owned banks. These banks face the prospect of increasing bad loans as a result of the hectic pace of bank lending in 2009-2010. Loans guaranteed by muncipal governments are estimated at 7.7 trillion yuan, or 17% of overall lending, about 50% of these loans face uncertainty in the event of falling housing prices, and 25% are bad loans. The recent IPO of Agricultural Bank of China raised funds, but the environment for raising money in this way does not look good, as information is spreading that these banks face large loan losses. The bonds from CIC would be picked up by state controlled companies. Yet these state controlled companies are engaging in the real estate speculation, as reported by David Barboza of the New York Times and Peter Coy of Business Week. In a down cycle things could get much worse as a state sovereign fund is selling bonds, state controlled companies would buy these bonds, and state controlled banks are expected to be recapitalized making a complete circle....

GM plans to bring 5 to 10 Cadillac models to China by 2016. It plans to build a factory for Cadillacs in China. Even as auto sales are slowing down in China in 2012, sales of luxury and premium cars are growing rapidly. Infiniti, Audi, BMW, Mercedes, Tata's Jaguar-Land Rover, and now GM are competing for sales to China's growing affluent class. According to IHS Global Insight, China's auto sales slowed to 2.5% growth in 2011, yet sales of premium car sales increased by 32%. With sales slowing in Europe and the U.S., car manufacturers are focussing on the luxury segment in China to boost profits. BMW's sales chief, Ian Robertson, says sales will slow in coming quarters from the 32% growth rate of 2011, but he still expects double digit growth for premium cars in future years. In making its large investments in China Ford executives said it expected a growth in China's car market of 5% over the next decade. BMW plans to increase production to 200,000 cars after opening its second plant in 2011, with capacity to ramp up to 300,000 a year....

Shiller says policy is captured and communicated by metaphors, the most effective being belt tightening for a family. However what works for a family does not work for a country in the same way, especially if not accompanied by other measures and implemented in a strict manner without looking at the real situation. Better suggests Shiller, and more real is the metaphor of "winter on the family farm," where people work to do other chores than planting and harvesting, because a lot of other things need to be done and this is a good time to do it. This would include cleaning up the place, fixing the farm and the barn, fixing machinery, building fences. The farm's members pay a tax in terms of donated labor which goes to do all the work needed and helps the farm's productiveness as the weather changes. Similiarly the Salant-Paul Samuelson balanced budget theorem from the FDR days shows an increase in national output by the amount of a tax, such as the one proposed in France by president Hollande; that would then be invested in hiring more teachers (the labor) and investing in education infrastructure....

Sim Shagaya and his online internet sales business DealDey in Lagos, Nigeria. He started with cupcake sales, a status symbol in Lagos. Because of online fraud most people in Lagos will not give out their credit card numbers. Dey gets around this by having motorcyclist riders deliver the goods and collect payment in cash. He has a 10,000 square foot warehouse near the Lagos airport, where motorcyclist delivery personnel take off for deliveries all over Lagos, with stalled traffic and delivery instructions like turning left where a lady sits with her plantains. He is planning a site that will be modeled on Amazon. Germay's Rocket Internet also plans to launch soon in Lagos, after opening in India, China and Brazil. Shagaya left Google S. Africa to start the business in 2005, initially starting a site based on the Groupon type business of selling vouchers. Items that sell well and are not returned are books, movies and videogames. Shagaya hopes to increase customers from the current 150,000 to 1 million for a Lagos population of 15 million, of which 5 millon are online on phones and computers....

Chrysler will have $1 billion in free cash flow each year in 2013 and 2014, down from an earlier estimate of $1 billion in 2013 and $3 billion in 2014. This is because Chrysler needs to increase spending to replace aging models. Even with the higher spending Chrysler will not be able to meet its original goal of 8 new or redesigned vehicles in 2013, including one midsize, one subcompact and two small Jeeps. Some will arrive in 2015-2016. Fiat will not give a dividend so that it can conserve cash to pay for buying the remaining 41% of Chrysler it does not own. Fiat's losses in Europe limit cash flow and under the agreement for the stake in Chrysler it does not not have access to Chrysler cash flow to finance increases in research and development of small car technologies used by Chrysler. Chrysler's margins are smaller than other automakers because of higher incentive costs. It increased market share in the U.S. market in 2012 from 10.7% to 11.4%. Ford and GM experienced declines in market share after a resurgence of Toyota and Honda and efforts to preserve margins....

This WSJ editorial says the EU bailout deal for Cyprus of March 25, 2013, which shut down Cyprus Popular Bank, and aggressively downsizes Bank of Cyprus, is the right move. Under this bailout deal no money from the EU's $10 billion to the Cyprus government goes to bailout banks. Cyprus Popular Bank is allowed to go bust, with only insured deposits below $100,000 protected. Larger depositors are compensated with equity shares in a "bad bank," holding this bank's questionable assets. The good assets of this bank are transferred to the Bank of Cyprus. Bank of Cyprus, the largest bank, will have depositors and creditors take haircuts so that it can maintain a 9% capital ratio- estimated losses of depositors being 35%. All this leaves Cyprus with lower debt of 140% of GDP than under other plans. A large part of these losses will be borne by Russian depositors taking advantage of Cyprus as an offshore tax haven. Germay's Angela Merkel and finance minister Schauble face German voters in 2013 elections. Merkel and Schauble did not want to be seen burdening German taxpayers for bailouts in Cyprus to help affluent Russian depositors....

Friedman says he hopes Hillary Clinton will take a mediating role to bring all the Iraqi political factions and ethnic communities to work together in a democratic framework, and not go their separate ways into sectarian conflict once more. With the US out of Iraq by June 30, 2009, this is critical. Friedman says Iraq, Pakistan and Afghanistan are not separate wars, but part of the same war, and the same struggle to win credibility for democracy and reconciliation, education, women's rights and modenization for the Muslim world as a way forward. Its the only alternative to looking backward. He says he has never bought into the idea of Iraq as the bad war, Pakistan as the necessary war and Afghanistan as the good war. In fact he says experts point out that very little will spread out of Afghanistan when the US leaves. But Baghdad has been acentre of culture, education and influence in the Middle East for centuries, so getting it right there after so much American effort and sacrifice has been invested there, is crucial for the Muslim world to move forward in the right direction....

Henry Ford, Eleanor Roosevelt and H.G. Wells slept on Simmons mattresses. Eleanor praised the virte of the Beautyrest brand. THe company is 133 years old starting in a small city in Wisconsin. The company has since 1991 been sold and resold to leveraged buyout firms and private equity firms and debt which was $164 million is now $1.3 billion. The recession has destroyed any chances of serious recovery and the debt has made the company's prospects dim and uncertain. THe employees have been devastated and risk losing more jobs. Along the way $750 million were made by the various private equity owners. Julie Creswell says that in many ways this mimicks the subprime mortgage boom. With easy money from banks, endowments and pension funds, private equity firms were using this money with little of their own to flip companies with reliable cash flows after taking on extra debt, at higher and higher prices. Question this raises is what sort of activity is best as a society for America, innovation, new products and building companies by investing in human capital, technology and research or risky investments, and Simmons type investing? Howard Dean, former Governor of Vermont, where Dean helped set up health care improvements, says the bill currently in Congress for health care reform does not deserve to be called reform and may do more harm than good. He points out that it does not insert competition into insurance markets, does not significantly lower costs, and does not improve the delivery and use of health care services. And few Americans will see any benefits till 2014, by which time premiums will have increased significantly. He sees insurance companies as winers in this bill, and the American taxpayer about to be fleeced with a bailout in a situation that dwarfs even AIG. One of his keen criticisms is already apparent to the public in this health care bill, that clear thinking has been thrown out in favor of compromise and political calculus, and by political moves the bill has been stripped of real reform , the end result being a bill crafted for votes and not to reform health care. It also then sets an irreversible course of how future healthcare reform is done, doing more harm in the future. ...

Companies with good credit ratings are paying higher interest rates and others are finding it harder to borrow as investors flock to safe Treaury bills and government debt. And in 2009 about $700 billion in debt has to be refinanced. Southwest Airlines needed $400 million partly to cover losses from betting that fuel costs would remain high. It is the only domestic airline with an investment grade rating. It had to pay interest of 10.5%, twice the rate it paid in 2004 to raise $350 million. It is doing the borrowing now because its CFO says it does not know what the credit markets will be like 6 months or a year from now. Corporations borrowed $172.7 billion in the 4th quarter, down from $179.1 billion in the last 3 months of 2007, with businesses trying to borrow ahead of further deterioration in credit markets and overcrowding as the government steps up its borrowing to meet the needs of the $825 billion stimulus spending. Businesses that cannot get the access to the credit as refinancing comes due or find the high interest rates (sometimes approaching 20%) onerous, may not survive. ...

As a result a patient only spends 30 minutes ayear on average with family physician compared to one hour in other developed nations. In the USA there has been a steady decline in the level and quality and extent of family care and the close one on one rapport with well trained family physicians who enjoyed their work and understood their patients and kept up with their health conditions and provided good and regular advice on these conditions. There is no money in this care as a result first you provide an environment where a whole range of medical conditions can flourish and expand, and then you hit them with a whole series of tests to rule out specific medical conditions. It is a perfect way to expand the testing and let testing flourish, so it would appear that if someone had wanted to start with a goal of letting testing proliferate unhindered then this would be the perfect way to design it. ...

Wholesale inflation calculated weekly is at 7% in India. And the country's Finance Minister Chidambaram says he is more concerned about inflation than a growth that slows a bit. Experts forecast growth slowing down from 9% to 7% in the next 2 years as the global slowdown affects India. For the US India has been a good export market with sales growing at the rate of 75% a year according to the USA Commerce Department. But a look at the charts shows that China also had periods of a couple of years when growth slowed to 7% in recent years before it gradually went back up to over 10%. And China's growth will also be affected by the global slowdown and fall weel below 10%. And this may be a health y thing for China as it decides what kind of growth it wants to see that is better than the haphazard growth of the last few years with its huge environmental costs and lax regulation and the imbalances in growth between urban and rural as well as wages and benefits without labor law protections to create domestic consumption by a middle class. ...

GM says that 19,000 employees have taken buyout or early retirement offers and most of them will leave the payroll by July 1, 2008. This will cut GM's workforce by 24%. GM is considering idling at least one plant and discontinuing some product lines as SUV's and truks go into deep sales decline. Most significant is the fact that is incredible but true that with this round of buyouts and retirements about 53,000 workers or roughly half of its workforce has agreed to leave the company since the beginning of 2006. It shows how the bubble in automobiles (see the link to a recent WSJ article on this) has resulted in such severe impact, and moved to create a structural shift in the USA market for automobiles, making them smaller in size and the total number sold in a maturing market smaller also. This is something already ocurring gradually in Japan and Germany from their peak years in auto sales and a shift to overseas slaes as is happening with GM and Ford also as they shift focus to overseas markets. Sales in Brazil were cited by GM CEO Wagoner recently as helping improve GM's otherwise poor results....

In the light of the Irish No vote to the Lisbon treaty for a closer political union in the EU region, and the response from from propornents of the Lisbon treaty that this would delay the process of extension of the EU towards the parts of Eastern Europe still outside the EU, what does this mean for these countries that are looking to join the EU at some point? A new World Bank study says the future for countries that remain outside the EU does not look good. Lack of competition and contacts with the outside world keeps productivity low, poor education systems and an ageing work force, and millions of people in backward regions being left out. An economist at Poland's biggest bank sees closer ties to the eastern countries outside the EU including opening up their labor markets and free trade in goods and services as a way of reinforcing the Eastern partnership that Poland and Sweden and the Czech Republic have supported for closer ties to the EU with Ukraine and other Eastern European countries outside the EU. This means bringing some of the same benefits that have helped integrate Poland into the EU....

Significant results for the ruling Congress party in India as the voters reelect Sheila Dikshit for a third term for Delhi city state, and as Congress wins election in Rajasthan state and in Mizoram. The election results showed that the local issues played a bigger part, and the voters did not respond to communal ideas or to vote against the central government because of the terrorist attacks in Bombay. This is overall a good sign as voters were turned off against all politicians when it comes to their ability to ensure public safety, and economic and other issues as well as accountability for public safety and not a kneejerk reaction to events like the Mumbai atttacks is what determined the results in these states. As elections for the whole country's central government take place before May, 2009, this is an oportunity for the Congress to look to voters for support of its economic agenda and for the opposition parties including the BJP to show what they could do better in the present global financial crisis that is affecting both China and India's growth rates....

On the production side output has fallen to an estimated 1.6 million barrels a day(U.S. government and independent analyst estimate) from nearly 3 million barrels a day in 1998. But even this is an estimate, PDVSA says its daily output is about 2.2 million barrels a day, and plans to boost it 4 million barrels a day by 2012. This decline can be seen also in the backdrop of the major strike in late 2002 and early 2003. At the time Chavez fired 19000 employees of PDVSA who opposed his policies. Researchers David Autor of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Gordon Hanson of the University of California, San Diego, and David Dorn of the Center for Monetary and Fiscal Studies in Madrid, in independent research, studied the impact of trade on 722 clusters of interrelated counties in the U.S. They focussed on the surge in Chinese imports and found a pattern. Counties with higher exposure to Chinese import growth showed higher unemployment and higher expenditures by the government for unemployment benefits, food stamps and disability benefits. Their calculations show the increased government payments amount to one to two thirds of the gains from trade with China. This does not include the losses suffered by people losing jobs who deplete savings as they look for new jobs. Hanson studied the effects of trade and Chinese imports in the 1990's and found the effects were relatively small. This time the effects are large and show counties that lacked local investments in industrial machinery and technologies in which China was still playing catchup such as Caterpillar in Peoria, Illinois, and Boeing in Everett, Washington, were most susceptible to higher jobless rates and in need of government support payments. Autor and Hanson found that from 2000-2007, communities in the 75th percentile- ones with greater exposure to Chinese import growth than 75% of all communities- saw a manufacturing jobless rate of about one-third more than communities in the 25th percentile. The government payments mean higher taxes or larger deficits are needed to support these communities, and long periods of unemployment reduce the incentive to work. Michael Spence, a Nobel prize winning economist from New York University, says the world has never seen such a rapid pace of growth as China experienced between 2000-2011, with rates approaching 12% in some years, making past experience and prevailing theories on trade an insufficient guide to what is happening....

He attends many of the internet conferences and gatherings in China and overseas, loudly explaining China's Communist Party line that "respect for national sovereignty" on the Internet should be adhered to. Mozur and Perlez reveal the vigorous personality of Lu Wei as he argues for this view of the Web at gatherings, in sharp contrast to the way younger generation social media users and business users see the internet. Lu Wei spent his early years as bureau chief of the state owned Xinhua News Agency in southern Guangxi Province. He was promoted to positions as secretary general and vice bureau chief at agency headquarters, and to vice mayor of Beijing in 2011, chief of the city's propaganda department. He came into prominence following an article in the Communist Party journal "Seeking Truth," after pointing out that China needed to manage the way information about the country and the Party is presented using the new information technologies. He also perceived the risks posed by distorted or incorrect information to financial markets, and economic security. This was confirmed the following year with the rapid spread of reports about a high-speed rail crash in Wenzhou, China, and in numerous other incidents following this, as social media reports that could not be confirmed spread quickly in out of control fashion. He now is the director of a new Central Internet Security and Informatization Leading Group, headed by president Xi Jinping, with the task of coming up with a policy for balancing views of openness needed for the economy with government views on internet oversight. This is not only a political matter, as Chinese officials face the challenge of how to get the public to vent views on critical matters such as public anger about pollution, food contamination, contractors and badly constructed housing in a recent earthquake, mismanagement in the railways ministry, and a whole range of issues related to economic development, health and public safety. ...

About 41% of Unilever's $53 billion in sales come from developing countries, up from 22% in 1990. In 2006 developing world sales increased by 8%, sales in Europe only 1%, and sales in the USA only 2.4%. This shows the growing significance of developing countries sales to Unilever. With head offices in Rotterdam and London, Unilever was formed from a 1930 merger of a Dutch food company and a British soap company. Unilever has been selling its bar soaps and cooking oils in the Dutch and British Empires, in countries like India, Indonesia, and South Africa since the 1880's. CEO Patrick Cescau is focussed on promoting products in fast growing regions of the world. The management structure is being changed to recruit new and nurture promising managers in countries like India and South Africa. These managers are being trained in western countries to learn new marketing methods, and are being asked to come up with their own new ideas for products from scratch for developing countries with low price points. Its not about adapting existing western products, but dreaming up new ones for low income shoppers. Its introducing a product called Cubitos- miniature bouillion cubes - tailored to low income shoppers in 25 developing markets and their tastes, for as little as 2 cents. The stakes are huge. Its competitors like P&G are doing this in Mexico. Nestle is expanding in Brazil with a new plant dedicated to shoppers making less than $10 a day, and setting up a distribution network to sell to small stores in shantytowns in Latin America. Unilever estimates are that 1.2 billion consumers will buy packaged goods for the first time in 2010, mostly all in the developing world. Detergent sales are soaring in places like India, as shoppers use powders to clean their clothes, moving up from bar soaps. Estimates are that each week 40,000 people in Asia use a washing machine for the first time. ...
