It shows how poetry can help bring a calmer soother element into our busy and sometimes frantic lives. Poetry that is read for its deeper subtle meaning with pauses and time to reflect on the words, each word gently,and let it gradually sink into our subconscious minds. The results can be amazing if it is read the right way, slowly, and not the way we read journalism, news reports, prose or essays. It is well worth reading the poems given here by Fiona Macdonald, even reading one can be soothing and calming in its effect.

This BBC report shows how much has changed with Germany's erstwhile leaders. From 1998 to 2005 Mr. Gerhard Schroeder was head of the German government. His ties with Russian leaders and Gazprom have led to severe criticism in Germany. He survived an effort this week to remove him from the local chapter of the Social Democrat Party. He now faces a loss of his office and staff and other privileges in the German parliament. The Budget committee of parliament says "he no longer upholds the continuing obligations of his office," says this report. Mr. Schroeder has filed a suit against the German parliament in the Berlin Administrative Court. This BBC report shows how things are changed in 2022- Merkel, Schroeder, Steinmeier and other politicians of the Christian Democrats and Social Democrats face intense public skepticism of their role in a situation where Germany faces a cold winter with gas rationing. It is the Greens with Robert Habeck who are faced with the hard work of finding the energy to meet the shortfall and to build back on renewable energy to fight climate change. Amanda Anisimova 23 year old Wimbledon finalist 2025 talks to BBC on struggling with mental health issues and burnout. She took time off from the tennis circuit to find herself and what she enjoyed doing outside of tennis, including a semester at university, holidays, exploring life with friends, after reaching the French Open semifinals at age 17 years in 2019. Soon after she felt the effects of burnout and did not go near a tennis racquet for months. 

She says about this period in life- "I learned a lot about myself, my interests off the court and just taking some time to breathe and live a normal life for a bit."

He left Japan in secrecy at 19 as part of a group on a secret mission to learn science and technology from the West. Starmer's visit to China and the result being halving of tariffs- it comes 8 years after Theresa May's visit 2018.  Starmer is following his intution  to set an independent course for Brtian's foreign policy. It makes sense as the US is using common sense in coming back to basics, to getting its own hemisphere policies right. How could there be a situation like that in Venezuela and Mexico as with the drug cartels operating as states within states- what would Teddy Roosevelt say about this? So we now have the Monroe Doctrine, the return of the Panama Canal, the restructuring of the oil industry in Venezuela, and other action. This also means Canada and UK, India, European Union can pursue policies that are common sense. It means for Britain a new openness with China after 8 years inward looking with Austerity, Brexit and Covid. For a smaller economy it makes sense for Britain to have agreements on trade as it signed with India, and now with China. Carney, Starmer and soon Merz will have worked out relations with China on trade and exchanges. For Europe and the US over concentration of making goods in China can be corrected while still engaging with China. For the EU the visits Germany's Merz made to the kite festival an India and Leyen/Costa of the EU following up with trade agreements are all part of common sense to not just reduce over concentration in China, but also to build a new partnership with India to form a 2 billion people market. All of which happened suddenly as European nations realized how to work out new arrangements following the war with Russia over Ukraine and China's support for Russia, taking up the cues from DJT common sense action in its backyard. "I'm a pragmatist, a British pragmatist, applying common sense," the prime minister tells BBC on the plane and says he wants to "make Britain face outwards again."  ...

For decades since 2000 American companies moved operations to China for manufacturing upto a point where there was over concentration and risks in the supply chain seen during the pandemic and as US- China relations diverged on issues such as Hong Kong, Taiwan, Ukraine. This report looks at the US companies shift to looking for ways to shift operations to India, Vietnam and other locations.

In an annual survey 30% of American Chamber of Commerce in China companies out of 360 respondents are shifting their operations for manufacturing to other countries from China. About 25% of tech and R&D companies said they had already begun moving their supply chains out of China.

Katya Adler, Europe Editor of the BBC, points out the change in Germany as AKK, Anne Margaret Kampbrauer, the new leader of the ruling CDU party, brings a change of tone in its outreach to Britain. AKK is slated to be the next chancellor. Her vision was expressed in a letter to The Times saying with other Germans that her wish was for Britain to remain in the EUroepan Union, that she was asking Britain to reconsider. She also supports a second referendum on Brexit.    There is also anxiety in Germany about the effects of no-deal Brexit taking out 0.5% of German GDP at a time when Germany's economy is struggling in 2019. About 100,000 job loss is expected from no-deal Brexit in Germany. As Germany's tone is changing, AKK offers a new face in German relations with Britain that looks towards building a better relationship with Britain. Could this change minds in Britain as a new mood takes place in Germany, and in some ways in France with the emergence of populists in recent years calling for France to leave the EU. AKK tell BBC that Brexit has been a strain for all of us, that in some ways it has paralyzed us. She tells the BBC's Adler that anything that keeps Britain in the EU is something that would make her personally very happy. Rarely have German leaders or public expressed it in this way. Compared to the indifference of the past Germans and Britons having second thoughts offer some more light to the issues of Germany and Britain at a more personal level. ...

This BBC report says the Russian Black Sea fleet is reduced to little more than a coastal flotilla and the fleet is now adopting a defensive posture after heavy losses. This also makes an attack on Odessa unlikely. Odessa and other Black sea ports are where grain shipments leave Ukraine for Africa and other parts of Europe. This means shipments using Turkey and UN sponsored deal can now safely be routed from Odessa. 

It also means Ukraine is in a better position in the south in and around Crimea.

In a strange situation at the Russian border with Finland and close to where the Nordstream 1 pipeline starts a Russian LNG plant is burning about 9 million dollars worth of natural gas, according to BBC News. The burning of gas on this scale and in this manner hurts the environment and increases climate change. Russia has cut supplies to Germany on its Nordstream 1 pipeline and the Germans facing a natural gas shortage are scrambling to get LNG supplies from US and Qatar.

Across Britain in lakes and along the coast it became popular to take a swim sometimes in temperatures that were quite cold. Cable television's decline as seen from the experience of CNN. This report in the WSJ says not only is cable television declining in viewers, CNN is falling behind MSNBC and Fox which are also declining. The 24 hour cable news network format is seeing rapid shift to streaming services that generate little profit. Monthly prime time viewers for CNN cable television is down to 568,000 compared to one estimate of 166 million for its website and app streaming services. The result is a search by Warner Discovery, new owner of CNN, for a way to reverse the slide in people watching by showing both sides instead of skewing to one side, which is also not working. 68 million Americans subscribe to cable television packages including CNN down from 72 million in 2022 for which CNN gets $1.25 per subscriber. Advertising produces most of the revenue- $600 million in 2022 down from 900 million in 2020. Smaller audiences and poorer ratings with so many choices for viewers from CBS, ABC, NBC, MSNBC, CNBC, Fox, etc mean less advertising revenues.   ...

The evolution of the Murdoch newspaper and television business from a small Adelaide newspaper News of Adelaide circulation 75,000 inherited from his father Keith Murdoch in the 1950's, is shown in this NYT report. It comes as a new generation is taking the place of the old. Rupert was then a student of 23 years at Oxford University in the 1950's. In the 1980's he acquired New York Post and The Times of London. By 1988 Rupert Murdoch shifted to use technology in the newspaper business. He followed this by acquiring other newspapers and setting up a television business Sky Television in the UK by 1989, and Fox News television channel in 1996. These television channels along with CNN and NBC, ABC now appeal to an older demographic in the mid to late sixties age. Much of the younger audience gets its information from the internet. Murdoch failed to develop the internet side of the business appealing to younger audiences. In this sense much of the influence of these older television channels is in a fluid shape likely to diminish in the future. ...

Hugh Schofield of the BBC gives this analysis of the televised national debate between Macron and Le Pen on April 20. BBC also gives a video of the debate. On the economy and cost of living- Macron said actions he has taken to put a cap on fuel prices and tax exemption for pay bonuses were fairer and more effective than Madame Le Pen's ideas. Le Pen said she would cut the VAT on energy. Macron said a cap on fuel prices was "twice as effective as dropping the sales tax." Le Pen said she will cut taxes, and no tax for under 30's.  On Europe and Russia- Macron said Le Pen was one of the first leaders to recognize Russia's annexation of Crimea. "You are speaking to your banker when you speak to Russia," Macron said referring to a bank loan from Russia. He also said that the French did not look to Russia for finance, when Le Pen said she was turned down by French banks. On the European Union- Macron argued that Le Pen's idea of "a Europe of nations" would spell the end of the European Union and that "you are selling a lie." Schofield says Macron avoided the trap of coming across as too arrogant or technocratic, sometimes even holding back.  ...

NBC Entertainment chief, Bob Greenblatt, and the effort to revive the network after years of low ratings. Greenblatt is introducing new series including 2 new dramas in the 2014 season- "Crisis," about a hijacking, and the thriller "Believe." The hit "Blacklist" in fall 2013 helped move NBC up in the ratings for the 19-49 years advertising audience. Compared to cable, Greenblatt says television shows present a bigger challenge with more hours to fill, audiences looking for better storylines, and the need to try new approaches something Greenblatt has done.
