William Cohan describes the "bait and switch" techniques used by Bain Capital that he experienced in his personal dealings as a deal maker for 17 years on Wall Street. By this he means that Bain would make attractive offers in the early rounds of an auction for firms as the only way to get selected as a prospective buyer for a final bid. This was necessary for Bain to visit the company facilities and examine its books on-site. At that point Bain would finds all sorts of problems with the company and lowball its bid. Cohan says of all the private equity companies Bain Capital was the one most noted for using these methods during the period Romney headed the firm, and questions the credibility of Bain's word and Romney's word.

German retailer Arcandor filed for bankruptcy after the government rejectd arequest for a loan guarantee for $650 million euros. Arcandor's Karstadt departmetn stores are in most downtown shopping areas in Germany. Faced with aloan repayment of 710 million euros, Arcandor was in talks to merge with its competitor Metro which has theKaufhof department stores. Karstadt has 89 stores in Germany and 43,000 employees. The rejection by Chancellor Merkel has some political risk and Merkel is counting on the public opinion against bailouts to withstand the fallout from the increase in the unemployed. The government setup a115 billion euros rescue fund in March, but this is meant to help only those companies that ran into difficulties from the financial crisis not from management misdeeds or mistakes.

Increasing use of opioids, suicides, chronic liver disease, are resulting in higher mortality rates for white Americans middle aged 45-54. This group has been hit hard by manufacturing losses, by the mortgage crisis of 2008 with its aftermath of job losses and low interest rates that slashed savings. Added to this is the effect of people with lower incomes needing to take retirement social security early, leading to another hit on incomes and the quality of lives, increasing uncertainty and even despair. People without a college education are hit harder in the current environment with fewer opportunities and greater uncertainty in life. The social security check being smaller for this group and its shorter life span means more of the social security pie is going to better off Americans who retire later, creating a uniquely American situation of widening economic inequality and unfair distribution of the economic benefits of society. This means disadvantaged groups are facing a crisis that will affect not just this generation but the children of these disadvantaged groups for the next generation- a failure to keep the promise of "life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness," American ideal for most of its history. ...

Rural Kansas is affected by the bill. Senator Moran says of the bill that he is from rural Kansas and wants to hear what people think. Senator Moran is one of the few Republican Senators who have come out against the bill. Kansans are realizing that policy matters after the experience with actions taken by Governor Brownback to cut taxes and spending. Now Kansans are also realizing that there is a cost to being ideologically driven in coming up with solutions whether from the right or the left of the spectrum. Senator Moran after all is in the mainstream and led the 2014 effort to give Republicans control of Congress. It is also the state of Dwight Eisenhower, whose hometown was Abilene, Kansas, known for being moderate on issues, a descendent of down to earth Pennsylvania Dutch families, and for saying- "a people that values its privileges above its principles soon loses both." Here Moran does exactly that, listening to how the Republican healthcare bill affects rural Kansas, without getting muddled up with the politics on the issue. ...

BBC says "tech's seedy side exposed" by Musk- Altman trial 2026. Let's face it there is a seedy side, and a much less benevolent side to Tech than it likes to show. The overspending on AI is a sign of misplaced priorities when so much of US infrastructure is dilapidated, much of it from before 1945, that badly needs to be rebuilt. Much of the promise of hardware from Tech that would change education is a failure so much so that Sweden is shifting on a nationwide effort in its schools to a program - "from screens to binders" that gives children binders with notebooks to write in and books to read, removing screens altogether, and for good reasons of the educators of Sweden. Tech in its grandiose style pretends it is about the technological revolution when it is simply the companies Amazon, Google, Apple, Microsoft, Nvidia, three of which are from the last 15 years. The technological revolution and the scientific revolution date back to Copernicus and Newton and the hundreds, thousands of scientists and pioneers of the industrial revolution of the last 250 years, and the men of vision and wisdom that gave us the British and American Constitution, the principles of self-government of civilized societies. ...
