Qualcomm's acquisition of Netherlands based chipmaker NXP for $39 billion using cash overseas is part of its diversification effort. Autos make up about 41% of NXP business, and is an effort to position Qualcomm to benefit from the high tech automobile, as smartphone business slows. After the acquisition mobile phones will make up 48% of revenues instead of 61% before the acquisition. Share price of Qualcomm was up 12% with this deal at a 34% premium on NXP's share price.

Life isn't fair but it pays to be there when the opportunity comes up and luck plays its part- this is the time to move towards the opportunity even though there is a lot of uncertainty. This is Steven Mollenkompf's way of approaching things as CEO of Qualcomm. And he says its fine if an employees contribution is seen as good things happen in 5 years. Its the A's and B's being able to influence things, not bringing a C to a B level thats important, and not tolerating the negative (jerks for example), so that the culture helps the company grow as opportunties are taken up. Here he describes how he hires and how the company functions with a lot of flexibility for employees to make things happen. In a tech growth environment as the one Qualcomm has experienced in the last 20 years, and led by research professionals, this culture has enabled Qualcomm to grow rapidly and seize opportunities.
