A government watchdog in Germany keeps track of what members of Germany's parliament the Bundestag earn in secondary income from speaking fees and other sources. The watchdog is called Abgeordnetenwatch or parliamentarian-watch. German parliamentarians are now required to list what bracket they are in with the highest at 250,000 euros with no ceiling set. One exception is for lawyers, consultants and farmers who can avoid transparency for upto 3.3 million euros. Unusually these professional backgrounds are left as exceptions. Still Germany is making an effort in this direction where such an effort is absent in the U.S. leading to a credibility gap for established parties and politicians, and leaving an opening for criticism from outsiders who can say they have no connection to lobbyists. German members of parliament earn an income of 9300 euros a month.

Germany's effort to tighten rules for politicians in parliament following a court ruling, including limiting the influence of lobbying interests. This is attracting attention in the current climate of skepticism for established parties and establishment politicians. Some find it unacceptable that other members of parliament should be earning more than chancellor Angela Merkel.

The modesty and credibility of VW Golf driving German chancellor Angela Merkel

08/23/2013

Angela Merkel drives a VW Golf for supermarket shopping from her apartment in central Berlin. Voters sense this as fairly normal behaviour of the chancellor. Voters dislike the fact that her SDP rival Steinbruck took 1.3 million euros in speaker fees in 2012. By contrast there is a sense of authenticity for the chancellor. Merkel supports setting minimum wages by industry, and is taking away many social and economic fairness issues away from the SDP. Her personal popularity is above 60% in polls taken in 2013. Even at a time when the Christian Democrats and partners Free Democrats have lost state elections, the personal popularity of the chancellor remains high. The hard work in defending the euro currency and German position favoring financial discipline coupled with flexibility in setting deficit targets, shows a chancellor with proven results as the European economies gradually recover from recession.
