Tsai Ing-Wen of the Democratic Progressive Party in Taiwan and Taiwan's relations with China

The current president Ma from the Koumintang party has seen his support drop in opinion polls to 20%. He pursued close economic ties with China, and met recently with Chinese president Xi Jinping in Singapore. Andrew Browne of the WSJ says the Taiwanese are opposed to reunification with China, and do not see integration in the manner of Hong Kong Kong's integration with China as an option. The events in Hong Kong with carefully controlled democratic governance may have led to increasing support for Taiwan to continue its current free elections and system of government.
