A similiar challenge exists in the UK, Germany, Holland and Scandinavian countries. It was emerging as an issue long before the Charlie Hebdo attacks. Immigration was an issue in the 2014 elections in Sweden, and is emerging as an issue in the elections in other European countries, increasing the popularity of right wing parties.

Only 2% of the people in the former East Gemany are foreigners, yet there is increased wariness in the east about immigration from Islamic countries. With low unemployment in East Germany there is less of the anti-immigration sentiment that has increased support for Marie Le Pen in France. Anti-immigrant Germans in the former east Germany say they do not want to see the "ghettoes" of immigrants found in some West German cities.
