We will stand up to Russia's actions and their attempts to re-establish a Soviet-era sphere of influence." The NATO readiness effort called "Operation Atlantic Resolve" is designed to meet Russian intervention in Ukraine and preserve the independence of countries in Eastern Europe.
NATO's Very High Readiness Joint Task Force (VJTF)

A joint task force of forces from Germany, Netherlands, Belgium, Czech Republic, Lithuania, and the U.S. is setup in Poland in June 2015. The 5000 troops VJTF goal is to be capable of responding in less than a week. A plan to station a brigade with heavy armor near the Baltic states is being considered by NATO. The German and U.S. defense ministers visit a German-Dutch brigade during a visit to Germany by U.S. Defense Secretary Ashton Carter. This is NATO's response to Russian advances in Ukraine using hybrid warfare and other methods.

Defense Secretary Ashton Carter says the U.S. must be better prepared in coordination with its allies for the mix of propaganda, subversion and cyber programs used by Russian president Putin. It says this is not a return to the Cold War, but better preparation means it would be possible to tell when Russia was using these tactics, and when it was not.
