Chinese diplomats overseas are trying to engage with the U.S. and worldwide public on China's progress. The emphasis is on China's peaceful rise and how it has benefitted other countries- with lower cost products expanding the buying power of the world's consumers, creating commodities demand from Argentina, Brazil and other countries, aid and infrastructure building in Africa, and expanding its own middle class to create markets for industrial goods from the U.S. and Europe. This comes as prime minister Abe of Japan is disseminating Japan's story of "Japan is back." Japan points to the increase in the military budget of China and the need for dialogue with Japan.

U.S.-China relations. Policy differences and trade relations are expected to exacerbate in 2010. The role of the U.S. as a supplicant to China in 2009 may lead to frustration and stepping back. US-China relations are tense because of continuing trade pressures and large trade deficits as China continues with its export model. Currency issues also an irritant.

Though the American and Indian media made much of the border dispute, Li Keqiang, the new Chinese prime minister has correctly grasped the importance of the Indian trade and economic relationship for China's companies and future growth. This has the added advantage of defusing tensions in Asia- tensions arising with Japan and S.E. Asian countries, with a U.S. wary of China's capabilities.

Jinping promotes the idea of "China Dream," and China as a world power on a level with the U.S. It is not clear if this is a part of an effort to have secure relations with the military and the China Military Commission as the new leadership of Jinping and Keqiang move to make major social and economic policy changes, or simply an effort to continue peaceful development with a new assertiveness about China's rights in territorial disputes with Japan, or both.

Shinzo Abe's committment to change Article 9 in the consitution of Japan which limits Japan's military role. His maternal grandfather Nobusuke Kishi was commerce and industry minister during the war and was post war prime minister when the Japan-U.S. security treaty was signed. He was the first prime minister born in the postwar period when he became prime miister in 2006. He is less influenced by the legacy of the prewar and war period as described in his 2006 book "Toward a Beautiful Nation."

We took a different way to help millions around the world build educated informed mindsets that affects and shapes their lives. For a future that is open, global and digital, with everyone having access to high quality information. We believe in the renewal of America, renewal of Europe, the renewal of India, the rest of Asia, Latin America and Africa. The renewal of our supply chains, health, education, infrastructure, as we rebuild our countries after the pandemic. Literacy and knowledge we believe cannot thrive and grow in a world of web bots, web crawlers, or AI. This requires human curiosity, human learning, and human imagination. We take as inspiration the saying- “One has to be free, and as broad as sky. One has to have a mind that is crystal clear, only then can truth shine in it.” Every contribution whether big or small is precious- in this crisis and ahead.
