AT&T had 4.3 million iPhone activations in the first quarter of 2012, down 43% from the prior quarter. Of the most valuable subscribers who signed up for 2 years AT&T showed 187,000 additions. All but 7000 of these were in tablets. . This indicates that the smartphone market in the U.S. is being saturated. AT&T used the iPhone introduction in 2007 as a way to take subscribers from Verizon and Sprint. That advantage is now fading.

Nokia, Microsoft and the preference of wireless carriers AT&T and Verizon for alternatives to the iPhone and Android phones

04/19/2012

Verizon says it wants to see Nokia smartphones powered by Microsoft software as another ecosystem competing with Android phone and Apple iPhone ecosystems. This will give the wireless carriers more leverage as they work to reduce the large payments now going to Apple for carrying the iPhone. Verizon helped Android get strong start, now it hopes to do the same for Nokia. The same considerations may have been behind the strong support the Lumia line received from AT&T in the U.S. market.

Andy Grove and the scaling up at home that American companies need to do.

05/29/2010

Andy Grove brushes off talk of sending technologies and jobs much needed at home to China, with the talk he hears of "a China strategy." He doesn't see how an America with high paying jobs and mass of unemployed could work. He says American companies have failed to scale up, the way Intel did in the seventies. For every Apple employee there are 10 employees in China working on Mac's, Iphones, and Ipads. The idea of manufacturing as not important is misguided and he would like to see America rebuild its industrial base.

For a future that is open, global and digital, with everyone having access to high quality information. We believe in the renewal of America, renewal of Europe, the renewal of India, the rest of Asia, Latin America and Africa. The renewal of our supply chains, health, education, infrastructure, as we rebuild our countries after the pandemic. Literacy and knowledge we believe cannot thrive and grow in a world of web bots, web crawlers, or AI. This requires human curiosity, human learning, and human imagination. We take as inspiration the saying- “One has to be free, and as broad as sky. One has to have a mind that is crystal clear, only then can truth shine in it.” Every contribution whether big or small is precious- in this crisis and ahead.
