Katie Tobin deputy assistant to the president shows how Kamal Harris cut migration from Guatemala with her action to stabilize Guatemala after the destabilizing of the region by Reagan and Bush through wars started in the region. The achievements to get Guatemalans and Central Americans to stay home compares favorably with the wars and weapons sent to the region under Reagan-Bush that led to gangs taking over San Salvador and young people leaving. Consider $300 million in humanitarian assistance during COVID years, $5 billion in foreign investment lined up to create 250,000 jobs, pulling US AID and IDFC agencies for loans, and arranging for anti-corruption candidate to take over government in Guatemala following elections. It is an exceptional record achieved in a few months trying to undo decades of destabilizing Central America by Republicans Reagan and Bush. Reagan-Bush also destabilized the US with wars in the Persian Gulf, Iraq and Afghanistan, because infrastructure in US was neglected, and manufacturing jobs were shipped overseas under failures of Reagan-Friedman economic theories destroying communities across the US over three decades.

India's Supreme Court rejects a petition by 14 political parties that asked for politicians to have immunity from prosecution. Or that there should be no cases filed against them because there are certain statistics related to the leaders. The court ruled that it cannot lay down law in the abstract. Specific cases need to be filed and the Court would rule in that specific case. The Supreme Court said -"Ultimately a politician is also a citizen, and as a citizen he or she is amenable to the same law."

France's welfare state in a way that the US and Britain are less so, means that other solutions are needed for cost of living and the decaying small towns and rural areas. A next generation industrial revolution is needed to bring jobs home and closer to home to revive both France and Europe after decades of shifting jobs and industry to China. Needed only is the will and aspiration to do so.

The highly detailed WSJ reports on events going back 20 years throw light on the failure of Merkel in Germany and Bush-Obama in the US to grasp the situation of Russia under Putin's nationalism and the miscalculations made by president Putin about the changing situation in Ukraine that had created a national identity. While Putin looked to history something different had emerged on the ground for the people of Ukraine that both German and Russian leaders failed to grasp as they continued to pursue economic integration. Business in Europe and the US had no clue what was happening, and how the situation was unraveling till the end. It is also leading to the unexpected effect of accelerating weaning western nations from fossil fuels, a goal of Glasgow's COP26 Climate Change Summit, the only constructive effect of the war.

"Feierabend"- disconnecting from work the German way, the need of the times during a year of remote work 2021

"Feierabend" simply means disconnecting in German so that one has time to renew and revive oneself. At 4.00 pm or 5.00 pm one simply disconnects from work and gets on the bike for a ride or does something else. Can British and American cultures learn from their German or European counterparts? Ireland has passed a law calling for this disconnect requiring it because of the huge negative impact on mental health of remote work that has no structures. Microsoft has recognized this issue in 2020. More needs to be done by companies than to simply shift this burden,shift this task on someone else, or to workers who have no idea what working from home requires. Associations and other groups also need to get involved.

Polls now show a majority in Ireland may now be in favor of a reunited Ireland for the first time in history. The Unionist DUP party may no longer reflect the views of the people of Ireland. The Guardian points out that Boris Johnson's version of Brexit means broken promises to Ireland made by Britain. People in Ireland are beginning to realize that they may be better off in a united Ireland than in the Britain visualized by Boris Johnson which puts Ireland's interests last.

How the middle aged white Americans 45-54 are faring in the current environment with fewer opportunities and greater vulnerabilities in health, education incomes, savings, quality of life, mortality, upward mobility, for this group. Tragically this means their children and the next generation is also affected in the way fewer opportunities are available in the future. The situation is unique to America with weaker social protection than Europe, and to Britain because of years of austerity. There are no quick fixes with easy slogans, and requires first a national awareness, national consensus, and may require the better part of a generation to solve and restore the hope and promise of Jefferson in making the "inalienable rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness" available to all.

By damaging the international trading system including with allies such a Canada, Britain, France and Germany, the result of a downward spiral through higher tariffs in other countries, could end up costing the U.S. 1 million jobs. Under such a system the U.S. would lose many of the advantages of its booming tech sector, its tech driven global advantages in many industries, without signifcant gains in low cost imports such as clothing which would simply migrate to other countries such as India. The problem of worker wage stagnation in the U.S., and loss of jobs in certain sectors, is very real, but this is the wrong way to tackle the problem. China is already moving towards a consumer driven economy. Economists show that trade with Mexico would be seriously hurt both ways, creating more pressure of migrants at the border under such proposals as a 45% tariff and its indirect effect on Mexico, when the actual fact is that net migration from Mexico is the lowest it has ben in decades. Politics can do strange things as when two senators Smoot and Hawley from agricultural states Utah and Oregon, at the head of important committees in the U.S. Congress pushed and passed legislation for a 60% tariff in 1930 for the industrial sector they had no idea about. When Smoot and Hawley lost reelection in 1932 they left behind a lot of damage, especially for the farmers and workers they thought they were fighting for.

Scholz of Germany says Putin started this war for absurd reasons. NATO he says was never a threat to Russia. Russia invaded a neighboring country with the idea of conquering it. Scholz says Putin was taking a felt tip pen across the European landscape and drawing this is yours, this mine. And he says Germany would never accept that. Brendan Simms in his History of Europe- The struggle for Supremacy 1452 to the Present, is on German chancellor Scholz's reading list since 2021. It shows that for 500 years no dominant European power was able to do act with impunity without the rest of Europe joining together to prevent it. This war is not an exception. The European Union countries stuck together to make it possible for Ukraine to carry on even with generators to keep the lights on and supermarket shelves well stocked. In this sense the outcome of this war is already known. It has followed what Brendan Simms has pointed out already.
