By March 2012 India's Aadhar project- for unique identification numbers to be given to every citizen of India- will have given out 200 million 12 digit unique ID numbers. Nandan Nilekhani, former head of Infosys, leads the project. The Indian govenment has committed $650 million for the first phase of the project, which has the personal backing of prime minister Manmohan Singh.

Infosys CEO Vishal Sikka resigned saying he was responding to criticism which he called "a continuous drumbeat of distractions and negativity." The company's founders including Narayana Murthy had serious differences with the new CEO. Vishal Sikka was hired by the founders in 2014, bringing in an outsider for the first time in the company's history. Sikka worked for SAP before joining Infosys, and was in charge of innovation and development at SAP. Issues of concern to the founders including Murthy were the size of executive pay and the culture changes at the company under Sikka. A similar situation happened at the Tata Group when long time CEO Ratan Tata selected Cyrus Mistry to succeed him. Serious differences about the culture and the changes made by Mistry led to Ratan Tata moving to oust Mr. Mistry from the Tata Group. Narayana Murthy's response to Sikka's statement was that he was concerned "by the deteriorating standard of corporate governance at Infosys." Having an element of public service is part of the tradition at Infosys, and a focus simply on executive pay and shareholder returns to the exclusion of other values may have troubled the founders. In 2009 co-founder Nandan Nilekhani left Infosys to lead the Unique Identification Authority of India at the request of prime minister Manmohan Singh.  Both Ratan Tata and Narayana Murthy are leaders in the business community in India and may have misjudged in their selection of a successor, putting other factors ahead of tradition, governance and culture, leading to this separation in a short time of 2-3 years. This may become part of the broader debate about culture in Indian companies as the country modernizes and moves forward, what aspects from outside to adopt and what aspects of the culture of the founders that are valued to retain and preserve. In the case of Tata the culture goes back from Ratan Tata to legendary figures JRD Tata during the post independence period, and Jamshedji Tata under the British, and is taken seriously. The Indian government's chief economic advisor, Kaushik Basu, says the opening up of India's retail sector would have benefitted everyone including middle traders. This would happen because the retail sector would go through a vast expansion creating room for more players even though the per unit margin from products would go down. Experts say the infusion of new technologies and investment in India's supply chain and cold storage setup would help reduce food prices and inflation. Basu made the comments at the launching of the New Oxford Companion to Economics in India in Feb 2012. Basu is co-editor and it has contributions from Ratan Tata, Pranab Mukherjee, and Nandan Nilekhani.

About the reorganization of IBM under Sr. Vice President Robert Moffat Jr. that is underway. The idea is to make IBM more efficient by increasing the productivity of its people and reduce costs. There are over 200,000 people in the IBM services business. Operating margins increased by 2.3% to 10.3% with productivity improvements in the 1st quarter of 2006. IBM's revenues declined by 1.2% in the 1st quarter to $11.6 billion. This IBM Tech services restructuring will be watched closely by Indian IT and IBM's competitors. Moffat hopes to attack the IT tech services business with a new format to improve productivity and reduce costs, and bring IBM' strengths such as research capabilities to bear. The format is being a virtual factory with competency centres of excellence across the globe. The question is can Moffatt pull this off and convince a bureaucratic large organization to overcome inertia and do things differently. Especially as Indian IT is smaller and not yet affected by Big Company Syndrome. What Moffatt is attempting to do is to create a virtual global factory with specialized centres of compency in different global locations so that work can be transferred from one location to another- much as we see in the automobile industry- based on who does best what at what cost. Nilekani of Infosys, says American competiitors are "seeing it as a compelling threat after years of putting their head in the sand." They are responding to megatrends but not fast enough, according to Business Week. This may be attributable to the fact that Indian IT is younger, smaller, faces more competition inside India, and is more agile for these reasons compared to an IBM or an EDS. Hamm points out that IBM is shifting to a new posture as a globalized business, one that puts behind it its days as a multinational company or MNC, no more MNC geographically based independent country businesses, not an outsourcer as frequently assumed when IBM shifted some jobs overseas recently. The new IBM is an organization that builds on competency centers across the globe with concentration of skills and talent in different locations worldwide. It uses the competency centres to pull together the best people and sequence of operations to meet customer needs. ...

43% of children under 5 are underweight in India, according to nutrition experts. This compares with 5% for China. China made its biggest strides in combatting malnutrition between 1990 and 2002, say experts by reducing malnutrion for children by two thirds. This suggest that malnutrition must have been much higher than 21% in China in 1990. And during the period between 1949 and 1980 China had focussed under Mao and his successors on the bread bowl, making sure that hunger was no longer a problem. This suggests the Indian middle class that thinks of the poor as there but not so worse off as to require a sense of urgency, or feeling slighted by the comparison with China need to do some thinking. From the perspective of progress the economy can only do well if rural and poorer areas are also part of development and share in the benefits of development. The other aspect of this is that the government can setup a program, and other countries like Brazil are also faced with the similiar problem and are tackling it aggressively. This is already takng place with a Right to Food Act in the Indian Parliament. Drafts of this Act call for a government subsidized minimum of 25 kilograms of food grain per family per month. But atttitudes in India need to go through a big change to take this problem seriously and with the urgency it requires from a developmental point of view, not only a moral point of view. What good is demographic devidend that many Indian leaders in many fields talk about if that demographic dividend is stunted by malnutrition, is the question all have to answer. Even software leader, Infosys's Nilekhani, in his book Imagining India talks about the large changes affecting India in the rural areas, the economic and technological progress, but fails to mention this aspect of malnutrition....

K.V. Kamath, former CEO of ICICI Bank, will become the new nonexecutive chairman of Infosys. S.D. Shibulal, the chief operating officer, will be the new CEO of Infosys. Mr Shibulal said he will pursue a new strategy that will align the company's businesses on the basis of industries, service lines and geographies. Rajneesh Goel, Bangalore's chief civil servant, says the city never followed scientific landfill practices. Instead as Bangalore expanded with new business campuses for Infosys and other companies, the garbage was trucked out to sites with little planning and no interest on the part of companies on where this was ending up. Most of the landfill sites outside the city are now filled and the city is running out of places to dump the garbage. About 4000 tons of garbage needs disposal every day, over a millon tons a year now that the city is no longer the smaller garden city it used to be, a place where people looked to go for retirement years in the early post 1947 period. A new effort is being made in crisis conditions by NGO's and business to come up with better disposal practices that are good for the environmental air quality and water quality.

India its reported is looking at the Brazilian program. There the focus is on cash payments with cards like debit cards issued on each individual's name that only that person can use so that the funds cannot be stolen by corrupt intermediaries with the person receiving it having to make sure that his children are in school and vaccinated. Knowing the thinking and mood of the younger generation of engineers programmers and other staff is critical. They are more optimistic and impatient about things so companies have to move quickly to change things to retain talent. The other major change is the number of young women that are joining. Nasscom the software industry association in India says that last year this was 35% and will rise to 45% by 2010. This is amazing rise considering that it started from very low numbers and these young women are more vocal than the men. It means companies have to keep their minds open to gender issues and respond. Giving young people a voice in the affairs of the company, giving them achance to be not lost in the crowd, a shot at challenging assignments for the talented, some kind of inhouse training program in management and in other areas so that they can keep upgrading their education and value to the company, some peers and superiors assigned to mentor new employees, hiring from smaller cities so that those who want to be near family can do so and have higher loyalty than with chasing high level talent in bigger cities and supplementing with good inhouse training , are a list of some of the things being tried by companies. ...

Somini Sengupta reports on the Green Revolution and its aftemath from Jalandhar (Jullundur in Hindi) in the Indian Punjab wheat belt. Problems facing farmers here are the shrinking water supplies as more of the table water is exhausted through pumping from tube wells, lack of government investment in agriculture, the low grain prices paid to farmers by the government, and poor storage and transportation to market. Also affecting the suuply of grain and lentils and agricultural produce is the progress of industrialization as more farmers either grow crops that are in demand in the cities like baby corn instead of wheat, and the farmers who sell of land for industry or commercial use. Only 40% of the land is irrigated so too much depends on the monsoon and other rainfall, which is why India's large agricultural component in the economy affects the growth rates depending on the monsoon rains. What happens here affects food supplies worldwide and prices. When India is self sufficient or able to export there is less pressure on prices. Two years ago the situation deteriorated and India imported about 7 million tons for its grain stockpile. Since then the government raised prices for grains the situation has improved, farmers planted more wheat and sold more supplies to the government for building up buffer stocks of grain. Now the emphasis shifting to USA-India cooperation in the field of agriculture for a second Green Revolution. Agreements for the agricultural improvements were signed as part of the agreements signed for cooperation during President Bush's vist to India. The government of Manmohan Singh was elected for another 4 year term and is committed to helpiong Indian farmers. A more organized funded effort is needed especially with the economic crisis. Global aid to agriculture in developing countries is about $5 billion a year. Mr Obama made the decision to double U.S> aid to developing countries farmers to more than $1 billion ayear in 2010. THe NYT reports that with the G8 meeting in Italy in July, America will spend $3.5 billion dollars over 3 years for helping farmers in developing countries. This according to Michael Fromans, an Obama adminsitration official is going to be new money. As far as the other G8 countries are concerned it could include old money for the total $15 billion committed. Since the worst hit areas for agriculture are in Africa, and Africa has lost a lot of ground in development in the last 20 years, suffering neglect in aid to farmers over 20 years both form the American administrations and their own governments, it is surprising that the amount and the details for where it would go in Africa are not revealed. Mr Obama has grasped the need not just for shipping food assistance from the USA, but need to help farmers. He agrees with ANdrew Natsios former head of Agency of International Development, who says that most of the poorest people in developing countries are farmers and herders living in the countryside, the crux of any effort to improve their lives has to start with agriculture. Obama advocates using the "tried and true agricultural methodfs and technologies that are cheap and are efficient but can have huge impact" in the lives of people. Malawi, is a good example, say Prof. Sachs of Columbia University, as subsidies for fertilizer sharply increased food production. Sachs says it is possible to double or triple food production by giving small-holder farmers access to high yielding seeds, fertilizer and agricultural extension services. But more needs to be done and devloping countries themselves that have made progress like India, China and Brazil can provide their know-how and experts and should have been brought into this, which is another reason why there is no reason for a G-8 summit of countries of European origin. An enlarged organization can bring in the resources and ideas of all the major countries in the world, to especially bear in on Africa, where alot needs to be done. Just to get an idea the UN's Food and Agriculture Organization says the global economic crisis will put another 100 million people into facing hunger this year....
