The European Stability Mechanism made its first short term debt auction Jan. 8, 2013, by selling 1.927 billion euros of treasury bills. Japan remains a key investor. Japanese finance minister, Taro Aso, said Japan plans to to be an active investor in the ESM bond sales. He told a news conference: "Japan will purchase some ESM bonds using its foreign exchange reserves as it monitors progress in efforts to stabilize the European situation." Japan holds $1.27 trillion in foreign exchange reserves. The move pushed the yen lower. Investors pay the ESM to keep cash for three months- the ESM treasury bills had an average yield of minus 0.0324%. The ESM fund will be used for aid to Spain's banking sector, Greece, Ireland and Portugal. Plans are for the ESM to issue three month and six month bills twice a month to reach 18.5 billion euros by the end of 1st quarter 2013. The ESM fund rating is Aa1 by Moody's Investors Service, and AAA by Fitch Ratings.

Schneider points out that the IMF opposed the original deal in Greece rejected by the Cyprus parliament that taxed small depositors. The IMF rejected that deal on the grounds that small depositors should be protected and this would set the wrong precedent for eurozone countries. Other reports in the WSJ show Germany chancellor Angela Merkel also opposed taxing small depositors. It could very well be that after agreeing to the Cyprus demands for reducing the losses for larger depositors- including large deposits of Russian investors using Cyprus a an offshore tax haven- by taxing small depositors at 6.875% of their accounts, the patience of the IMF, ECB, and Germany with the Cyprus government was waxing thin. In the final deal the IMF, ECB and Germany insisted that only deposits larger than 100,000 euros should take losses, and that the economy based on offshore tax haven and lax banking laws had to go.

Netflix generates revenues from a $7.99 subscriber plan. The DVD by mail business, Netflix's original business, is shrinking with a loss of 240,000 subscribers in 1st quarter 2013, and 7.98 million subscribers remaining. Coorodination, forbearance and multilateralism are three ways to keep economic nationalism from disrupting a global trading system that has benefitted all countries. Even the small moves to help home countries like the the move for US steel in the American stimulus projects, and the demonstrations supporting "British jobs for British workers", and other steps that quietly find their way into individual countries efforts to protect their home industries and jobs, can over time build up into something that would exaggerate the size and extent of this economic downturn. Forbearance and leadership from the US government on this issue and by leading developed countries is vital. So is the effort to develop a coordinated effort through close consultation and joint monitoring of progress. And equally important is multilateralism which works to help emerging countries hit hardest, and help prevent millions from sinking back into poverty, thereby destroying the hope and aspirations that had propelled the global progress in improving living standards....

Dana comes out ahead of Delphi and exits bankruptcy. Mistakes made by Steve Miller which are costing Delphi. One was to take on the unions publicly. Dana's McCracken thinks its best not to do this publicly and create antagonisms. Delphi's rocky relations with the unions means that talks that ended in June 2007 took 21 months of negotiation. And then with the involvement of Cerberus the talks dragged along for longer. Because of the deteriorating union-Delphi relations Cerberus exited. By then in late 2007 Delphi faced the credit crunch and changed credit markets so that financing is difficult. Hedge fund Appaloosa Management is the lead investor in Delphi and its founder David Tepper has poor relations with the UAW. In contrast the UAW brought in private equity investor Centerbridge Capital Partners and they had good communications witht the unions. Delphi is losing $1.3 billion in 3rd quarter 2007, whereas Dana is expected to breakeven in 2008.

Gigot personally faced the brunt of attacks from Countrywide's Mozilo and of Fannie's Raines and of Freddie Mac as he had his reporters look into the workings and shady things that were going on at Fannie and Freddie. Here is his personal account of how it all started and how anybody who raised any questions about these companies was given a lot of trouble by these executives and their lobbyists and the people whose support they bought with donations in Congress and in the political setup, all so that the executives at Fannie, Freddie and Countrywide could enrich themselves. In the end both liberal democrats and countryclub republicans shamelessly supported Fannie and Freddie upto the end when their dishonesty and failure was clear for all to see says Gigot. Says a lot about the political system, its only guarantee for good sense and honesty is in the quality of people and their courage, as leaders so often fail in so many basic ways.

S&P credit analyst put GM and Ford on credit watch with negative implications saying both companies face a serious challenge to liquidity in 2009. And said in an interview that "these companies need a lot of liquidity to run their businesses, and they could approach the minimum levels they need if nothing changes." For GM liquidity concerns are rising because losses for the last 3 and half years have reached $70 billon and credit markets have locked it out of new financing and stalled asset sales such as the Hummer brans and its medium duty truck unit. All this has rattled investor confidence including slipping sales numbers in the US, Europe and in emerging markets like Russia. GM had the larges one day decline in its history by 31% to $4.76 on October 9, 2008, a postwar low for GM stock, and Ford fell 22% to $2.08. In fact GM's intraday low was $2.26! for an astonishing collapse.

Tata Consultancy Services acquired Citigroup's India based outsourcig unit Citigroup Global Services for $505 millon in an all cash deal. With that deal TCS alo got a $2.5 billion contract to provide process outsourcing services, application development and infrastructure support to Citigroup and its affiliates over 9 and half years. This is notable because the Citi contract is the biggest ever for an Indian company, as previously Indian companies have operated with smaller scale deals lasting 2-3 years and worth $50 to $200 million. In October 2007 TCS signed a 10 year $1.2 billion contract with Dutch group Nielsen. What this does is enhance TCS capabilities and expertise to go head to head with companies like IBM and EDS. The Citi acquisistion adds 12,000 employees and $280 million in revenues to TCS. TCS had 111,000 employees before the Citi Global Services acquisition and this expansion will enable it to compete more effectively with IBM and EDS/Hewlett Packard.

Retail sales in China dropped sharply. Retail sales dropped from double digit increases for most of 2014-2017 to single digits in 2018- sales dropping to 8.1%. Government restrictions to prevent a housing bubble restrained housing sales, and policies to control corporate debt limited growth. Higher inflation for food and housing, have led to asharp pullback in growth of consumer spending.  Trade tensions with the U.S. have hurt consumer sentiment. The feeling that China's growth would stabilize because of its connections to the world economy is fading as consumers see persistent trade tensions with the U.S. including tariffs of upto 60% in tit for tat actions as hurting China's prospects.  The GDP growth is expected to be about 6.5% for 2018 according to government estimates, which experts say is actually much less or even half that as exporters retrench in the face of slack demand in China and lower sales to the U.S.  Rail and other infrastructure projects that were considered unsuitable are now being given approval in efforts to boost the economy. More tax cuts and expanded deficit spending are policies likely to be followed.  At foreign companies no overtime, and job cuts are commonplace especially in the auto industry. ...

Lael Brainard, head of the National Economic Council, and former Vice Chair at the Federal Reserve answers questions at the Council of Foreign Relations in Dec. 2024. Points she made are- The inflation we experienced was correctly diagnosed by Powell and the Fed as caused by Supply shocks from the pandemic not 1970's style embedded expectations inflation.  The response was to free up the supply by freeing up the clogged Los Angles Ports with labour and logistics coordination, and other actions. It also included redoing the supply chains to reduce dependence on China as only supplier. The 2017 tax cuts mean revenue will be 1.5 percentage points lower than the historically 18% of the GDP. This will increase the deficit. Biden administration had kept the deficit in control and reduced it by making offsetting adjustments when investment in certain areas such as childcare was done. The childcare tax credit is important for American families. Action is needed to increase the supply of housing. These are reminders of what is needed for the new DJT administration to keep the American economy on a strong footing says Brainard.     ...

Michael Barnier was the candidate for Les Republicains. Macron's Movement Renaissance party is closest in thinking to the Les Republicains, the party of De Gaulle. He was appointed prime minister of France by Macron. Barnier had proposed a strong policy of turning off non European immigration for 4 years, and not allowing relations of immigrants within the country to come in. This immigration policy is becoming accepted in Europe among the socialist parties. In Denmark socialist prime minister Mette Fredriksen was elected with policies for the working class and unions but opposed to migration on grounds that it hurts the working class. France, Germany are shifting in this direction after overburdening of social services, and crime by migrants. The US is also shifting in this direction for both Democrats and Republicans with Biden policy to close the Mexican border. This ends a period of relative tolerance which set back goals of workers and their families for a decade or longer as anti migrant parties used the protest vote to oppose worker rights and shifted the economy into the hands of pharma, oil and tech companies, billionaires in the US, UK and Europe at the expense of workers, middle class, and students.  ...

Harold Thibault of Le Monde France says, the rise of China in the past 50 years means the US is wondering whether engaging China turned out be something different than what Clinton anticipated when letting China join WTO without strict rules for a level playing field, and the Bush- Obama years when nothing was done to protect American manufacturing in small towns across America from the ravages of so called "free trade" that was not free, and the effort of American business to integrate its operations with China as single supplier without any guidance from government, behaviour that started with "American triumphalism" of the 1970's and 1990's, that left America with a destroyed industrial base. The Reagan wars that went on with Bush in the Middle East and South Asia and were continued through the Obama years allowed not just the waste of American resources and energy, it also provided a distraction from vital issues of the industrial base in manufacturing and technologies. Only DJT and Biden had the courage to end these wars and focus on the real issues facing the Nation and provide a continuity across three administrations from 2016-2029 to restore America to its past. ...

Going forward, it will “be the official policy of the United States government that there are only two genders, male and female,” DJT said. Executive orders ending automatic birthright citizenship and DEI programs.  Automatic birthright citizenship is not in the Constitution signed on Sept 17 1787, and ratified by the states by June 1788. What was added in the 14th Amendment of 1868 was intended solely to give black people freed from slavery after the Civil War the rights of citizenship. It had nothing to do with millions of people illegally crossing American borders from foreign countries or people coming to the US to gain citizenship by giving birth here. The US vs Wong decision of 1898 came 6 years after the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1892 giving Wong Kim a Chinese born in the US in 1873 rights as a citizen. From 1882 Chinese who build the railroads were kept out of the country under Chinese Exclusion Act till Kennedy in the 1960- as policy applied to all Asians- making it a mystery how the SC decision of 1898 gives automatic birthright citizenship to people of foreign countries born in the US.   ...

Either China or India was going to at some point develop the Brahmaputra river known as Tsangpo in Tibet where it starts for hydroenergy. It turns out that the modernization of China preceding India's by 20 years and the occupation of Tibet in 1950 has put China in the position of developing this river with a huge dam. The Brahmaputra in Arunachal Pradesh and Assam states of India is the same river that is called Tsangpo in Tibet when since 1000 China had little physical contact with the region greatly remote from Chinese cities such as Beijing and Shanghai. The Brahmaputra in its Tsangpo stretch of the river in Tibetan region originates at lake Mansarovar and Mount Kailas and on a map can be seen as very close to Guwahati, Assam and distant thousands of miles from Beijing. The dam will include 5 hydropower stations, produce 300 billion kilowatt hours and cost $170 billion. Two decades of rapid growth in China supported by the US with technology and capital have given China the capital needed for this type of scale of investment in renewable hydro energy. It will produce as much energy as the UK used in 2024. ...

Jimmy Carter rejected an ostentatious presidency and DJT is a beneficiary says the Editorial Board of the Washington Post. It was Jimmy not James. Daughter Amy was enrolled in a D.C. public school. He had his cousin Hugh Carter Jr pinch pennies by cutting out unnecessary costs in the West Wing. House Speaker Mike Johnson reminded the public of these virtues of simplicity and thrift. Jimmy Carter carried his own luggage into Air Force One. "Hail to the Chief" was not performed when he entered the room. The Nation appreciated this as is so evident in the final tribute and the heart felt gratitude of the people of America. One sees little division in the Nation when it comes to goodwill for Jimmy from Thune and Johnson in the US Congress whose tributes speak louder than the politics. Senator Thune should know, he grew up in a two room home in South Dakota and understands simplicity. What difference does it make if he is  a Republican or Carter a Southern Democrat. ...

The challenges of immigration with legal vs illegal entry into the US is a topic in some media reporting as the US seeks to do what the US did to tackle out of control illegal migration in 1954 under president Eisenhower. This one from the NYT happens in a small town in Missouri in a pancake and waffle restaurant. Earlier reports in the WSJ showed in 2024 the way Republican areas in small towns in Kansas were making an effort to attract immigrants to meet the need for people in manpower depleted public services. The basic idea of legal vs illegal and all the consequences on a national scale in the US and in Europe when illegal migrations gets out of control and creates divided communities, and strain on public funds and resources, is one that has been seen for over a decade. In Missouri, in a largely Republican town in the US the friendly nature of American public to immigrants is seen in the way the local community cared for and had genuine respect for the worker at the restaurant. Yet there is also the sense among members of this small community that US law should be respected.   ...

The German parliament set as a condition for approval that the IMF also participate in the Greece bailout. Germany's finance minister Schauble stated that it was particularly important to increase Greece's competitiveness,  to help Greece "stand on its own  two feet" by the middle of 2018. The IMF under Christine Lagarde, and the eurozone group say that Greece has implemented the reforms requested. Greece's ruling party Syriza split over accepting the reform package, with its leader Tsipras finally accepting the need for the Third Bailout program following a referendum and parliamentary elections in 2015. The IMF under Lagarde has stepped in to support Greece in its effort to seek conditions that make the debt program workable for Greece.

How Hiroshi Harunari is changing the way Mitsubishi is doing business. He personally answers emails from employees and dealers from 7 to 9 am every day to know what frustrated employees and dealers are thinking and have to deal with. He flies into Dallas and personally drives an Outlander to dealers in Dallas, San Antonio, Austin and other cities to talk to them and listen to what they are struggling with and what their customers are telling them. In 2 months in early 2006 his first 2 months on the job, Hiroshi visited 139 Mitsubishi dealerships in 29 states. He has launched a dealer co-op program to help dealers with advertising (as dealers had suggested) and Mitsubishi uses an upbeat advertising slogan " the next 25 years begin today" suggesting a completely new way of doing things. Hiroshi came from the Mitsubishi Group which financed struggling Mitsubishi Motors with $3 billion infusion after Daimler Chrysler pulled out in 1995. As part of the new plan for Mitsubishi it decided to get out of the old situation where younger drivers with bad credit had been targeted resulting in bad consumer loan losses. It now targeted more financially able customers with the Lancer sedan. It had Merrill Lynch do the financing of customer loans. For the year ending March 31, 2007 Misubishi sold 124,000 cars up 8% over the previous year with sales at dealerships increasing 24%, reversing a 4 year decline in sales, and pulling Mitsubishi USA to a $5 million profit. In 2005 Mitsubishi had lost nearly $2 billion so its quite a reversal. Hiroshi says he had to show that he was ready to pick up the chestnut from the flames, that he had the courage and energy to go out and listen to hundreds of dealers and customers and employees in 29 states in the USA and act immediately to satisfy their concerns. ...

Takata struggled with a faulty airbag recall crisis and failures in quality control that go back to 2004, with a crisis in 2015-2017 as a result of about 14 deaths. Takata's liabilities now run to over $15 billion according to Tokyo Shoko Research because of claims against it from banks, automakers and others. Takata declared bankruptcy on June 25, 2017. Takata was sold to a Chinese owned manufacturer based in Michigan, Key Safety Systems, for $1.6 billion. Takata had hoped for a white knight investor or some of the automakers such as Honda to save it. But the liabilities were too great and automakers in Japan resisted the idea because it might upset shareholders and it made no sense to assume growing liabilities. As a result the Takata company name will go out of business- for a company that started in 1933. The Chinese company taking on the business, a quarter of the market share for the airbag market, is Ningbo Joyson Electronic Corporation. A related article in the NYT in 2014 by Tabuchi shows how management at Takata failed to act responsibly when the early beginnings of the crisis happened in 2004. See the link. Donald Trump's economic advisory team includes in addition to Harold Hamm, shale energy billionaire, Steven Mnuchin, CEO of hedge fund Dune Capital Management, hedge fund billionaire John Paulson, Dan DiMicco, CEO of steelmaker Nucor, bankers Stephen Calk, and Andy Beal, tax expert Stephen Moore, and David Malpass, a columnist for the WSJ. The team is headed by Stephen Miller, an aide to Senator Jeff Sessions of Alabama. The Washington Post points out that the selection of the team with many hedge fund businessmen including John Paulson, who bet against faulty mortgages before the 2008 financial crisis, is at odds with his criticism of Hillary Clinton for her contacts with Wall Street and his message of not having any connections with Wall Street so that he could better represent the interests of ordinary Americans- people hurt by the 2008 financial crisis with the high jobless rate for older white men. In the 2008 election both candidates John McCain and Barrack Obama were shown in media articles to have connections to lobbyists for Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. In the 2012 election Mitt Romney as a private equity executive at Bain, was a part of the financial industry. This time in 2016- after all the noise and tumult about who represents Main Street- is no different for Trump and Clinton's connections to the financial industry. Only Clinton has to respond to the movement within her party from Bernie Sanders for providing a genuine example, and breaking with the past. The team of economic advisors put together by Jeb Bush led by Glenn Hubbard may be little different in substance than the one put together by Trump in its connections to the financial and real estate industry.
