San Francisco and Washington D.C. are the exception in housing markets- hundreds of America's midsize cities like Roanoke are seeing smaller rates of household formation leading to a decline in demand for single family homes and fewer homes being built. This accounts for a large part of the smaller growth in U.S. GDP. There are he points out about 2.3 million missing households as a result of a significant change in home buying patterns that is reducing demand for new construction of single family homes. During the period 2001-2006, before the 2008 global financial crisis, the rate of new U.S. household formation was about 1.35 million annually. This dropped to 569,000 in 2007-2013, as the effects of the crisis were felt in a deep recession. One result is more young people are postponing buying a house and living with their parents. Faced with large student debt- the total U.S. student debt passed $1 trillion for the first time recently- purchases of homes are becoming more dfficult. Of 18-34 year olds 27% lived with their parents before 2006, according to Labor Department data. This went up to 31% following the recession. Lack of good jobs is another factor. In 2014 March only 63% of 18-24 year olds had jobs. Even young people older than 24 with jobs felt it necessary to save money by living with their parents. More retirees too are moving into apartments....

The pandemic brings together companies in three countries U.S, Italy and France with the merger of Fiat Chrysler with PSA. Fiat Chrysler is owned by the company Exor owned by the Agnelli family in Italy. PSA is owned by the Peugeot family in France. In addition the government of France and Dongfeng Motors in China have stakes in PSA.  During the 2008-2009 crisis Chrysler merged with Fiat with the help of the Obama administration which pursued a policy of promoting small cars. Instead the merger saved jobs but led to the PR effort for small Fiat cars and the focus on the Jeep Cherokee and SUV's like the Dodge Ram. Today one hardly ever hears about small Fiats from Fiat Chrysler that was the basis for government help on the merger.

Walmart is going to require employees to use certain hospitals for costly spine surgeries, an effort to weed out unnecessary procedures and lower healthcare costs. The retailer earlier used a voluntary scheme to get employees to use the hospitals offering lower cost quality care, but found that half of the people needing spine surgery who volunteered to travel decided not to undergo expensive spine surgery. A spinal fusion surgery costs $77,000 at Mayo Clinic which tries to first see if other options of physical therapy can do the job. Walmart has insurance coverage for 1 million people.

Costs are going up and up. The average cost of family health plans from employers is up 5% this year to $20,000, with workers paying one third of cost, a survey by Kaiser Family Foundation shows.

There is great enthusiasm for his visit in Ireland and for what Biden is doing to keep the Good Friday Agreement signed 25 years ago in 1998 so that Brexit does not affect it and border are soft. Rupert Muroch's son James becomes the new CEO of 21st Century Fox. His other son Lachlan becomes the co-executive chairman of the company and will change location from Australia to Los Angeles. Rupert Murdoch's family owns 40% of the voting shares of News Corporation and 21st Century Fox. The moves are part of the succession plan put in place by Rupert Murdoch for the company he built from a single newspaper to a large media business that covers television networks, film studios and satellite companies.

The importance of not letting small dairy farms close all over the northeastern United States, including dairy farms in New York, Vermont and Maine, is shown here in NYT. Some of these farms go back to 1772  over many generations. Dairy farming is hard work and the family farms with each less than 100 cows are not just dairy farms but a part of New England and North East culture, heritage, and landscape. Ensuring that milk processing facilities exist for organic dairy farms in their regional area is important now that Horizon is shifting to the western states such as Colorado and California for its organic milk pasteurization pickup and processing.  French television TVMonde shows in a documentary how small family owned Swiss dairy farms struggled for years at low milk prices of 75 centimes per liter and were able to get 1 Swiss Franc per liter after many protests. Dairy farms are an important part of the culture, heritage and landscape of Switzerland. By getting a Fair Milk label and direct payments from the government small dairy farms in the Swiss countryside are able to pass on the farm to the next generation. Similar action is needed in the US as farms with 500 cows called factory farms in Colorado and Texas are putting additional stress on family owned farms with less than 100 cows in the northeastern US. The rule for pasture is key to having organic label yet this report in NYT cites Maine agriculture commissioner that this is not rigorously applied for these factory farms in the western states, and other rules for classifying which cows are organic are also not rigorously applied. Following the pandemic there needs to be increased awareness of the importance of keeping small dairy farms operating and being passed on to a new generation of young farmers, men and women, with the encouragement and support of state and federal government in the US. ...

The California State University system ranks high in creating social mobility in the US. Of the top 10 universities in the social mobility rankings 7 are in the Cal State System. About one third of the 460,000 students in the Cal State system are first in their family to attend college and half represent underrepresented communities. Half of all students receive Pell Grants. US president Biden's 2024 Budget places great emphasis on aid to workers and families in the US and shores up the Medicare hospital-insurance trust fund. He will do this by raising taxes on the wages, investment gains and self-employment income of people making more than $400,000 a year. Additional savings come from increasing the drugs on which Medicare can negotiate prices from 20 to 50 drugs.  Childcare- families making less than $200,000 a year will get subsidized child health care, the lowest income families paying nothing. Housing- Building and preserving 2 million housing units. Series of tax credits to make buying homes more affordable. College education- Reducing the cost of going to education with $12 billion allocated for this. Offering tution free community college. Family and Medical Leave- Federal paid family and medical leave program. Retirees- a $2000 cap on out of pocket cost of prescription drugs for retirees. Reduced taxes for under $400,000 income households- This would be done without increasing the deficits to extend the tax reduction from the 2017 tax cuts to households making less than $400,000 a year.     ...

Aldi stores is a chain of discount grocery stores based in Germany. The chain was started by the Albrecht Brothers who ran a family retail business in the 1950's. In 1961 they founded Aldi using the first letters of Albrecht and Discount. Their formula is becoming popular in the U.S. It focusses on smaller store size, making it easier to start new stores and find space in cities. Each store will carry fewer items and fewer varieties of each item than a Kroger or a Wal-Mart store. About 95% of the items carry the Aldi name. This makes it possible for Aldi to offer lower prices and higher quality. Trader Joe's is the upscale version of Aldi's and is run by the Albrecht Family Trust. Germans have experienced difficult periods in two postwar phases and reunification, and thrifty purchases are typical of consumer behaviour. Germans prefer to use their own grocery bags when grocery shopping as stores charge for the bags. The experience with this kind of customer gives Aldi an advantage in selling to thrifty buyers in the U.S. The chain is expanding in the U.S. with an estimated 1000 stores. It has an estimated 8000 stores worldwide. Compared to Wal-Mart, Aldi keeps a low profile and has little difficulty in locating in cities like New York. The smaller store concept and value offered helps in finding good store locations and support from local communities....

As a result a patient only spends 30 minutes ayear on average with family physician compared to one hour in other developed nations. In the USA there has been a steady decline in the level and quality and extent of family care and the close one on one rapport with well trained family physicians who enjoyed their work and understood their patients and kept up with their health conditions and provided good and regular advice on these conditions. There is no money in this care as a result first you provide an environment where a whole range of medical conditions can flourish and expand, and then you hit them with a whole series of tests to rule out specific medical conditions. It is a perfect way to expand the testing and let testing flourish, so it would appear that if someone had wanted to start with a goal of letting testing proliferate unhindered then this would be the perfect way to design it. ...
