Tony Hall, who joined the BBC in 1973, worked there for 28 years, heading the News Section from 1996 to 2001, was selected to head the BBC. His selection comes after the recent ethics problems at the BBC. The BBC is a major British institution with a 90 year history of providing news on world affairs. It reaches an estimated 240 million people worldwide. His selection was well received in Britain, with the host of the TV show Question Time saying hearing the announcement felt similiar to what it would have sounded to men in the Royal Navy when they heard that Winston Churchill was back.

Amazon's revenue for 4th quarter 2011 increased 35% to $17.4 billon. Profit for the 4th quarter 2011 declined by 57% over prior year quarter, as Amazon increased hiring, and invested in warehouses, technology and in Kindle electronic promotional sales. Operating expenses were up 38% from the prior year quarter. Operating margin was 1.5%, declining from 3.8% in the prior year quarter, but up from 0.7% in third quarter 2011. Analysts estimate that Amazon sells the Kindle at a loss of $15 per unit. Kindle Fire sales were up to an estimated 6 million units for the 4th quarter 2011. Hiring jumped and employee count was up 67% for 2011 over the prior year, up to 56,200 employees. Forrester Research estimates that overall internet sales growth for 2011 was 10%, showing that Amazon sales growth was much faster.

P&G's plans for additional 4000 job cuts after the 1600 already planned for the 2012 fiscal year. This move and other actions including changes to its advertising budget are expected to generate cost savings of $10 billion by 2016. The nonmanufacturing workforce will be reduced by 10% by 2013 for annual savings of $800 millon by fiscal year 2014. $1 billion in savings comes from moving to digital and other forms of advertising. $6 billion in savings would be generated from less costly packaging materials and supply chain efficiency improvements. By using concentrated forms of detergent products less packaging will be needed. Anaysts say P&G's cost structure compares poorly with competitors- with 31.5% of revenue going to selling, general and administrative expenses, compared to 28.1% for household product companies. At the same time as these cuts are made, P&G plans to add 20 new plants in Brazil, China, S. Africa and Poland.

Problems with the CSeries project at Bombardier include cost overruns, and development problems delaying the first model from late 2013 delivery by 2 years. A Swedish carrier dropped out as a customer in August 2014. The effort to compete directly with Boeing and Airbus in larger planes was a risky move as the larger competitors are improving fuel efficiency and reducing prices. Bombardier, suppliers, and the governments of UK and Canada have increased the investment in the CSeries project from $3.4 billion to $4.4 billion. Bombardier's total aerospace sales are $9.39 billion. The project was started by Mr. Beaudoin, grandson of the founder and currently the CEO, when he headed the aerospace division in 2004. It started as an effort to tackle slowing sales by building a new passenger aircraft with 125-160 seats that was 20% more fuel efficient than existing aircraft using engines built by Pratt & Whitney. The competing versions in this market segment were the Airbus 320 and the Boeing 737. Airbus and Boeing responded by putting more fuel efficient engines on the existing A320 and the 737 instead of developing whole new models, something Bombardier had not expected. In Dec. 2010 Airbus launched the A320 neo line, single aisle jets with 124 to 240 seat capacity, promising 15% more efficiency using the same Pratt engine to be used on the CSeries. In 2011 Boing came up with the 737 Max line. Because these are a bit larger than the CSeries is a plus for airlines. Analysts say about 75% of the market is taken as airlines have placed large orders for the A320 neo and the 737 Max. With the CSeries Bombardier is now betting the company that the new aircraft will attract buyers....

NBC Entertainment chief, Bob Greenblatt, and the effort to revive the network after years of low ratings. Greenblatt is introducing new series including 2 new dramas in the 2014 season- "Crisis," about a hijacking, and the thriller "Believe." The hit "Blacklist" in fall 2013 helped move NBC up in the ratings for the 19-49 years advertising audience. Compared to cable, Greenblatt says television shows present a bigger challenge with more hours to fill, audiences looking for better storylines, and the need to try new approaches something Greenblatt has done. It still is like hanging onto a moving train, says Greenblatt.
