The U.S. Justice Department is coming up with a proposal to remove some of that legal protection from lawsuits.The U.S. Congress passed the law  because of a court decision in 1995 against online provide Prodigy that held that online content providers could be held liable for defamatory online content generated by a third party. The news and information including video available on the internet have eroded dependence on public broadcasting in the US for communities across the US. The tendency of public broadcasting to be filled with people of views that did not represent a crosssection of America further eroded the credibility as views changed over time across different parts of America. By 2025 public broadcasting appeared as a leftover from the 60's and Congress defunded it in July 2025.

The injection of billions of gallons of salt water from shale oil producers in Texas into the ground contaminating ground water. Salt water and other kinds of waste water are byproducts of shale oil production at the rate of 6 wastewater gallons for 1 gallon of shale oil produced. This is becoming a huge problem in west Texas and the Permian Basin. When huge quantities of such water is injected back into the ground it comes back out of the ground in other areas and contaminates groundwater. About half of the US production of oil comes from the Permian Basin. Geologists at the UT Austin say that the pressure in the injection reservoirs in west Texas is now at 0,7 per square foot- at 0.5 per square foot the pressure is enou to have the salty toxic water seep back up to the surface of the ground. This is keeping water management personnel up at night and raising questions about the environmental damage in red hot shale oil production that taxpayers will be in the hook to pay years from now through clearing up the environmental damage. Abrasive and greedy behaviour of some internet company leaders is turning off the public, investors, and management This was the situation at Uber, resulting in new management at the company. At WeWork there are other problems and behaviours that are seen as totally inappropriate, including partying. Like many internet companies including Uber that investors have shown exuberance about but are losing money, WeWork is a fast growing subleasing company with losses of $1.6 billion in 2018. During a time when a large percentage of Americans lack savings to meet a medical crisis, this sort of behaviour and the greed of a small class of investors who have supported huge valuations in the absence of tangible products of matching value presents a strange picture of America with misguided priorities.

Google has trained 110 people in Taiwan as part of this effort. Taiwan also places importance on the public getting trained to spot what is unlikely to be true and inconsistent.

The 8000 mile Pacific Light underwater sea cable for internet goes from Los Angeles to Hong Kong. After review by the U.S. Justice Department the conduit connecting to Taiwan and Philippines will be used. leaving the internet link to Hong Kong offline. The U.S. is wary of connection to Hong Kong, and its use as a data hub, after the long public protests in Hong Kong. Perception earlier was of Hong Kong as a separate region from China, with its own distinct identity. This is now changing following the protests.

Jack Ma tells employees in an email: "At 48, I am no longer 'young' for the internet business. The next generation of Alibaba people are beter equipped to manage an internet ecosystem like ours. I believe they understand the future better than I do." Ma plans to give up the CEO role May 10, 2013, and let other managers inside the company run Alibaba. Alibaba runs the Taobao and Tmall shopping sites. Recent investments by Alibaba have focussed on improving its logistics system. Management changes include improving efficiency and giving more independence to managers to run their units.

According to ComScore the Yahoo internet site had 618 million unique desktop visitors globally in October 2015, compared to Facebook's 863 million. But for Yahoo this traffic is not yielding much in terms of revenue and profit. Yahoo's lack of quality content to command premium pricing means a continual decline in ad revenues. Analysts point to the lower quality of traffic on the Yahoo site, fewer direct searches on its site relative to clicks on ads, and aspects of its collaboration with Bing and Google, as serious problems. Compared to Google News, Yahoo News is chaotic and likely to draw less quality traffic, with the addition of Kate Couric and other commentary not having much impact on the gradual deterioration of the site. Facebook is dominant in mobile with $3.4 billion in revenue in the third quarter of 2015, compared to $271 million for Yahoo. As a result Yahoo's internet site based on its current share price in Dec. 2015 shows a small or insignificant valuation considering the level of traffic. ...

Elizabeth Warren has announced a plan to invest $85 billion in fiberoptic infrastructure to bring faster internet speeds for broadband service in rural areas of the U.S. which are poorly served. The Trump administration has recognized this for rural areas which is its support base. Trump's broadband efforts have mostly tried to remove barriers to investment. The FCC proposed its own $20.4 billion fund to expand rural internet service over 10 years using federal service fees for funding. Warren's plan by contrast is to provide 90% of the cost for construction of public fiber optic networks. Its part of a plan called "My Plan to Invest in Rural America." It includes investment in rural health care centers, and annual payments of $15 billion to farmers for adopting environmentally sustainable practices. Warren would fund this with a 2% annual tax on wealth above $2 million, and a 1% additional tax on wealth above $1 billion. In the U.S., Germany and other countries after years of neglect infrastructure is getting top priority.   ...

The evolution of the Murdoch newspaper and television business from a small Adelaide newspaper News of Adelaide circulation 75,000 inherited from his father Keith Murdoch in the 1950's, is shown in this NYT report. It comes as a new generation is taking the place of the old. Rupert was then a student of 23 years at Oxford University in the 1950's. In the 1980's he acquired New York Post and The Times of London. By 1988 Rupert Murdoch shifted to use technology in the newspaper business. He followed this by acquiring other newspapers and setting up a television business Sky Television in the UK by 1989, and Fox News television channel in 1996. These television channels along with CNN and NBC, ABC now appeal to an older demographic in the mid to late sixties age. Much of the younger audience gets its information from the internet. Murdoch failed to develop the internet side of the business appealing to younger audiences. In this sense much of the influence of these older television channels is in a fluid shape likely to diminish in the future. ...

Experts at Stanford Law School say the fewer IPO's expected in coming years will be a good thing as it reduces the boom and bust cycles in tech and internet IPO's of previous years. New technologies enable firms to reach breakeven at a much earlier stage with smaller investment- using founders money and capital from angel investors and less reliance on venture capital- so that companies can focus on the long term. The result will be fewer jobs created in investment banking and more in other places.

S. Korea's Ministry of Science, ICT, and Future Planning setup in 2013 and the 15 year plan to promote internet startups. The purpose of the plan is to persuade new graduates that opportunities exist outside the big conglomerates like Samsung and provide new resources for startups. Five ministries in S. Anne Applebaum describes the seriousness of the problem on internet trolls spreading information and disinformation to create confusion. Her proposal is that individuals take responsibility, and be able to post on media sites only after taking individual responsibility, no psuedonyms, no anonymity allowed considering the danger of such activity. Applebaum points to the effects shown of such comments following an article in media publications, which can influence the reader to actually doubt the content of reliable and well informed journalism.
