Diet consultant Tallmadge says be careful about reduced fat peanut butter, enhanced water, energy bars and multigrain foods. She says reduced fat peanut butter is worse than ordinary peanut butter because it takes away the nutrients in the oil. Enhanced water can be nothing more than sugary drinks with vitamin added, better to drink clean tap water. Sugar is a major ingredient in energy bars. Better to snack on fruits and veggies and yogurt, or carry nuts and dried fruits if hiking or doing outdoor activity. And watch out for the marketing words saying its multigrain, what you want is whole grain not refined starch. Don't be fooled by the marketing of the packaged foods industry, check the ingredients carefully, because labels such as "low fat," "high fiber," "multigrain," and "natural," don't mean much. Eating right starts with selecting food carefully and diligently, and goes a long way in preventing many of the diseases and problems coming out of poor eating habits.

Each year the amount of forestedd land that is cleared- mainly for cattle needing pasture land- releases the equivalent of greenhouse gas emissions of 600 million cars. Since 1961 methane gas emissions from cattle has increased significantly. This is one of the findings in a report published by 100 climate change experts for a UN body. Loss of peatlands in places like Indonesia is also a problem.  A half a billion people already live in desert. And land is being lost a hundred times faster than it is forming due to changes in weather patterns.  People migrate when weather fails as has happened for central American farmers migrating to the U.S. creating social and political problems in North America. A major issue in climate change is agriculture.  Increasing the productivity of land, reducing food wasted, persuading more people to eat healthy vegetables and less meat, reducing land lost to desertification, erosion and seas, are all actions that can be taken now say these 100 experts from 52 countries meeting in Geneva. The IPCC or Intergovernmental Panel for Climate Change does these reports to give people some idea of what actions to take to reduce the impact of warming that threatens livelihoods of millions especially in Africa and India, as well as other parts of Asia and Latin America. Developed countries are likely to feel the impact from migration which is dividing their societies politically and socially. As one expert from Aberdeen puts it people don't just stay where they are when drought conditions hit their areas, they migrate. ...

Millets are small seeded grass grown since ancient times in India and Africa that have the advantage during climate change of being resilient to drought, adverse weather patterns, require less water, and provide high nutritional value. In India known as bajri and ragi, in Sri Lanka as Kurakkan, and in America as finger millet, these ancient grains similar to ones in Eastern Europe that also lost popularity, were during the Industrial Revolution replaced by wheat and rice over most of the planet. The return of hope with a path for climate change action, a path out of inflation, also includes a path to better health through a transformation in food habits and in agriculture for Europe, the US, Asia, Africa and Latin America. Nestle's plans to accelerate the sale of poor performing business as consumer preferences shift away from frozen foods and processed foods to fresh foods. It is planning to sell the Davigel frozen food business. Nestle is also going through a period of slowing sales in China. Sales growth of existing business is about 4% a year. Kristof of the NYT says about American unions that the basic reality is that with the decline of trade unions in the last two decades workers got stiffed. The wages of new auto workers at $17 an hour dropped to levels close to the minimum wage of $16 in California in 2022. At $34,000 a year these workers were below the Federal Poverty Level for families of $35,000 to $40,000. Workers lost dignity and standards of living declined. After 15 years of covering the crisis of America's working class he says he lost his disdain for unions, and he has come to believe that unions are not just good for the workers but also for America itself. Unions he says are imperfect just as capitalism is imperfect, but essential for America.

Overall consumer prices were up 4.4% higher in October 2010, than a year earlier, according to the National Bureau of Statistics. Most of the increase in prices was concentrated on food and energy. China is taking action to limit price increases. During previous rise in inflation in 2004 and 2005, the government has resorted to detailed price controls. China's cabinet of ministers, the State Council, has issued orders that local governments and other government entities provide temporary subsidies to help the needy cope with rising prices and to increase allowances for needy students. Chia fears social unrest if prices go much above 5%. The Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN warns that food prices have gone up by 10% in the poorer countries. According to economists, China is effectively printing its currency renminbi to buy $1 billon a day worth of dollars to keep the renminbi weak, so that its exporters retain an advantage in overseas markets. The central bank takes away some of this renminbi but not all from the system, by selling bonds to state owned banks and increasing the amount of reserves required at the central bank. To keep the renminbi from rising, China's central bank buys up the investment dollars that are coming into the country, as well as dollars coming into the country from the trade surplus....

It is a landmark agreement and more innovative than the GM and Chrysler agreeements, with the UAW getting a significant stake in Ford, something that is a first. UAW supported money going into creating 5 flexible body shops so that investment to get Ford new models and manufacturing capability is put in place in this agreement- showing union management unanimity in understanding Ford's situation. The UAW Ford Agreement details: UAW gets about 18% ownership of Ford and becomes Ford's largest shareholder with about 4 times the shares of the Ford family. Ford will build 5 new flexible body shops in unionized assembly plants, invest separately $200 million in new technology and equipment in unionized stamping plants, and make substantial new investments in engine operations. All new hires will get a starting rate of $14.20 an hour and a full rate of $15.34 an hour, nearly half the curtrent level and its good till Ford reaches 20% of the Ford UAW workforce. When this is reached for entry level positions Ford must first move those hired at the lower wage upto the higher wage before filling in more positions at the lower rate. The VEBA health trust will work this way. Ford will only put in $6.5 billion in cash into the trust and $450 million each year in current dollars. The rest is done innovatively to conserve cash and give the union a stake in Ford that will be a first time in such a deal. It may change the labor vs. management atmopsphere in the long run as Ford recovers. A $3.3 billion convertible debenture note will be issued giving the union a stake of about 18% at current share prices, which terms are still not clear. Ford will also issue a $3 billion secured note. And to cover retiree health obligations until the trust makes payments Ford will pay $2.2 billion. The Jobs Bank is restricted to 2 years. After 2 new job offers are declined the worker goes off the payroll. Ford will also trim about 10,000 to 14,000 workers with buyout packages. ...

Shuanghui International Holdings, China's meat producing company, agreed to acquire U.S. meat producer Smithfield Foods Inc. for about $4.7 billion. The deal values Smithfield at $7.1 billion, including debt, and is at a premium of 31% to Smithfield share price on May 28, 2013 of $25.97. Smithfield sells products under grocery store brands and its own packaged brands Eckrich sausage, Smithfield bacon. Competitors are Hillshire Brands and Hormel Foods, which have national brands compared to the regional brands of Smithfield. The strategy of the previous CEO to buy hog farms alongside its pork processing plants led to problems under current CEO Larry Pope in 2008-2009, when the ethanol industry demands on corn supplies led to higher grain costs for the hog farms. A glut in pork supplies led to losses and share price declining to $6 per share during this period. The acquiring company Shuanghui is based in Henan province of central China, listed in Shenzhen, and sells products under the Shineway label. The deal now goes to the Committee on Foreign Investment in the U.S. for review. Concerns of food contamination are prevalent in China and the two companies emphasized their committment to "retain world-leading food safety and quality control standards."...

India's lower house of parliament passes a Food Security bill which provides subsidized rice, wheat and other grains to the poorer sections of society, covering about 75% of people living in the rural areas and 50% of the people in cities. The legislation increases the cost of food subsidies by $4 billion to $20 billion a year. Because of high levels of malnutrition in rural areas in India, especially among children, the program helps the needy. Brazil's Bolsa Familia program is more far reaching in helping the poor because it also requires vaccinations of children and making sure children attend school.

Ford Motor opened its new plant in Chongqing, China. It was approved in 2009 and is operated in a joint venture with Chongqing Changan Automobile Company and Japan's Mazda Motor. It has annual capacity of 150,000 cars and will manufacture the redesigned Ford Focus. Ford says this will be part of 15 new models in China by 2015. Further expansion is expected to be slower from now on, because China's policy is shifting towards consoldating its manufacturing base for automobiles- which experienced hyper level growth in the last decade- and not adding new capacity. Ford made a late entry in the Chinese market compared to GM. It sold 519,300 vehicles in China in 2011, compared to GM's 2.55 million vehicles. The change in China's policy may mean Ford has less opportunity to catch up with VW, GM and Toyota in China.

The increasing use of millet grains to substitute for wheat and rice is good for India as it copes with climate change. Millet grains are more resilient in the current heat waves that will continue for some time. Millet grains are also better from a nutritional perspective. The entire chain, planting season timing, irrigation and fertilization of crops, need to be researched and the research used to prepare for climate change with new agricultural practices, say experts. Nutri cereals such as jowar, raagi, bajra, have the physiology to be resilient and have lower water demands, higher tolerance for coarse soils and heat, says a professor of ecology at Columbia University. The UN has declared 2023 as the Year of Millets and PM Modi has also launched a campaign for greater use of Millet grains. Millet grains have a high level of iron, fiber and certain vitamins.  With obesity increasing in all countries  after the world moved away from these Millet grains and other ancient grains the time has come for a return to the more nutritious grains of the past. Only one or two generations ago in our families history these Millet grains and ancient grains were used widely resulting in better health and fewer of todays medical conditions. ...

Tip 1: Don't accelerate too hard from a stop, Remember easy on the throttle and then glide. By Glide is meant releasing most of the pressure on the accelerator to use the bare minimum to maintain your speed. Tip 2: Anticipate Traffic. Watch the flow of traffic and distance to the light, then ease off the accelerator pedal to coast up to the next light. Tip 3: You won't believe how much energy it takes to go from 65mph to 75 mph. Gil knows from working in an aerodynamic lab. Its huge and to save energy just ease up on the accelerator pedal. For hybrid drivers he says many accelerate too slowly from a stop, and he advises accelerating a bit more and then lifting off the throttle to engage EV-motoring. About the Fusion hybrid. The 2010 Fusion hybrid gets 41 mpg city and 36 mpg highway. It beats Toyota Camry hybrid by 8mpg and 2 mpg respectively.
