Efforts to save the VW brand in North America as it faces disappointing sales. It lost $1 billion in North America for each of the last 3 years. VW faces perception issues among customers in the USA who read JD Powers surveys. The surveys show VW in the bottom 20% for reliability, quality and service. Its younger customer base does online shopping and compares models and this led to sales declining from 338,00 to 235,000 in 2006. Now Jacoby, an accountant by training, who headed VW global sales and marketing and boosted market share from 18.1% to 20.3% in European car sales, has been given charge of the American operation to get VW to breakeven n North America by 2009. Previous ad campaigns showing VW safety in car crashes and Helg a German dominatrix failed to stir up much interest in Jetta and Passat models.

Binyamin Applebaum cites different experts on how U.S. Fed policy could play out in 2017-2019. He cites Fed governor Dudley that there is increased uncertainty under the Trump administration, and other economists who say that aging population, lack of innovation, and steady growth under the Obama administration with falling unemployment, make it unlikely that growth will jump well above 2%. The Fed's own forecasts are for for under 2% growth in 2017 and 2018, and Applebaum says this is not expected to change by much. Janet Yellen does not see a huge stimulus as a positive, says Applebaum, because it would increase the deficit at the wrong time. He cites Yellen who prefers to see more fiscal space now that unemployment is down to 4.6%. Steady growth in the view of Fed officials has taken up much of the backlog of people looking for work since the 2008 crisis. Yellen sees some fiscal space as desirable with high debt to GDP ratio at 77 percent, so that the government could respond to some adverse event in the future. BYD shares have fallen sharply as sales of its gasoline powered cars have declined in the Chinese market, declining by 43% from the high by Feb. 8, 2012. Part of the problem is that sales have shifted to foreign brands. BYD pushed ahead with developing electric car technologies, but the market appears to be moving in the direction of gasoline-electric hybrid cars, in which the Japanese manufacturers have the lead. BYD sold very basic cars at the low end of the price range. In 2009 and 2010 the government provided incentives with reduced sales tax for cars with small engines and subsidized sales in rural areas, which helped BYD sales. These program were phased out. In 2011 restrictions on cars went into effect for Beijing, with license plates for the municipal region reduced by two thirds, to limit the automobile congestion in the city. The license plates were distributed using a lottery system., This further shifted purchases to the higher price end made by foreign brands. BYD now sees the future sales potential in hybrid gasoline-electric cars and has changed its strategy....

Jennifer Steinhauer of the NYT says the U.S. Congress is acting as a counter balance to  president Trump to maintain America's postwar policies common to both Republican and Democratic presidents and seen as part of core values- support for NATO and the mutual defense enshrined in Article 5 of NATO, support for the trans-Atlantic alliance. Senators in Congress are now voting overwhelmingly to support these values. This is seen in the manner the leading Republican on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee sees his job- to retake the important role Congress and the Senate Foreign Relations Committee has historically played in making foreign policy. His view is that the committee he chairs had become a kind of debating society. It is also seen in the way Corker handled a Russia sanctions bill giving Secretary of State Tillerson time to seek improvement of relations, and when time had run out pulling together all members of the Senate to pass the Russia sanctions bill. That bill passed the Senate by 97 for and 2 against in an overwhelming show of support for Congress to make its own foreign policy moves.  ...

This is a reminder of how Mohandas Gandhi would have viewed the globalization of the last 2 decades that ripped out manufacturing communities in the US and Europe in what is now seen as a failed supply chain that failed American workers and families. As the US and Europe build a new supply chain with the partners in the Free World including India, with the countries of Latin America, Asia and Africa, only the foundations of the new supply chain that build a better life for American, European and foreign workers and families is sound in principle and deserves the Free World's support. ...

BBC Analysis shows the president going on the offense to take up the issue of illegal migrants, cost of living, and business investment to get the economy to grow. DJT compared the $1 trillion in business investment under Biden over 4 years with the $18 trillion that he had secured in his first year. He said the tariffs were here to stay whatever the Supreme Court decision stated because all the agreements with EU, UK, China, India, South Korea, Taiwan, Japan, other countries will remain in place as all countries want it that way. The president stated that through tariffs he had secured benefits for getting manufacturing back to the US to create jobs and raise incomes. The Big Beautiful Bill also added to business investment through its writeoff in one time for equipment and plant. The oil price per gallon had gone down to $1.85 a gallon at the pump lowering the cost of living and inflation. He pointed out that the economy was strong with low inflation lower than 3%, unemployment at 4% and ecponomic growth in 2025 close to 3% with some quarters exceeding 4-5%. The US ice hockey team attended the event and the Congressional medal of honor was given to soldiers in the Venezuelan helicopter dangerous mission, and to a World War II pilot who was 100 years old. Transgender was shown as an issue with parents shown with their daughter who had suffered from transgender laws that he asked Congress to change. Calling some of this crazy as parents and families were suffering as a result. ...

Not only do the Japanese carmakers have a huge leg up over American carmakers in having development on these technologies started early because of the conservation ethic in Japan's use of energy, but now because of being in much better financial shape than their competitors in te USA they can make the huge investments going forward in the next 10 years. Note the huge costs of development. Honda spends an estimated $1 million on every FCX Clarity, Honda's new hydrogen fuel-cell car, that it makes today. It hopes to get the production costs below $100,000 per car.

Sharp price reductions in cloud services of over 40% and upto 85% in 2014 are being offered by Amazon, Google and Microsoft. Amazon has $3 billion in sales in cloud services increasing by 85% in 2013 over the prior year, according to Bernstein Research. About 10% of corporate computing center services are handled by these companies. The sales in pay-as-you-go cloud computing services are estimated at $13.3 billion for 2014, an increase of 45% over 2013, according to Gartner Inc. A website with 50 million monthly page views costs about $1219 using a company's own servers, compared to $468 for Amazon EC2, $402 for Microsoft Azure (Linux), and $395 for Google Compute Engine, according to SADA Systems. Amazon also offers services for $390 with a 1 year contract for heavy usage.

India's External Affairs Minister Jaishankar visits Sri Lanka. He says-  "We felt strongly that Sri Lanka's neighbors must take proactive steps to facilitate its recovery. India decided not to wait for others but to do what we believe is right. We extended financing reassurances to IMF to clear the way for Sri Lanka to move forward."  He emphasized the enormous renewable energy potential of the island nation which India supports. The larger region provides new possibilities for Sri Lanka to get the benefits of scale for energy development. He pointed out that India is " prepared to go the extra mile when Sri Lanka feels the need." India and Sri Lanka share a long history from the period of the first conversion by Mahinda from India of the island to Buddhism.
