What does transformational liberalism mean? What does fairness mean? What does it mean to have unemployment insurance, to have health care, to have jobs, to open the door to the middle class for a college education. Is this transformational liberalism? Or is this "transformational liberalism" a part of a vocabulary of cliches that have lost meaning as the nation confronts job losses of the magnitude of 500,000 a month, and this is only the beginning. Much of the increased debt the nation is occurring is going to provide government help to financial institutions like the $177 billion that has gone to AIG so far, just one company, and there are the Citigroups and other companies like AIG. What does it mean to have "burden sharing," when the rest of the country is frightened, scared, losing jobs, losing savings, and at this juncture cliches may have lost meaning, as its those who profited most and got us into this crisis like the investment bankers and senior management of companies in industries like the mortgage industry, auto industry who will be paying their larger share not because of redistribution, but because they may be the ones who can most bear this burden wihtout great sacrifices like cutting down on necessities and basics. See the link to Countrywide's Kurland who plans to profit both by overselling mortgages and creating the tinder that started this fire, and now to profit by buying distressed properties at pennies on the dollar, with $200 million from Black Rock as an investor, and $200 million on stock he sold before the crisis. Is a Kurland who has not been subject to any regulatory action, or management of AIG, or Citigroup or GM or the other companies receiving federal money by the hundreds of billions of dollars about to ask the half amillion of unemployed and the others threatened with job loss each month, for "burden sharing"? Nobody wants to see any of this happen, what has happened, including the debt, but it has happened, and it was not engineered in the new budget or in the few weeks since early January 2009....

An Italy based auto analyst for Global Insight consultancy, Pierluigi Bellini, says Marchionne understands how the system works in the US compared to Daimler executives, who had a difficult time understanding and integrating themselves with the Americans at Chrysler. Marchionne has worked in North America, and brings a youthful culture with plenty of creative energy, which could work well with Chrysler. Chrysler is also at the similiar stage that Fiat was in 2004, when Marchionne came in from outside- it is broken and everyone including the Obama administration is looking for a fresh start. In such a situation its easier to tear up the old organization charts and bring in fresh blood, young people with new ideas, and make a fresh start. Wth the government providing the financing, the financial risk is minimized. What remains is the risk in a drastically smaller and rapidly declining market. Here the lack of mass market small cars in the US, may work to the advantage of a European maker with fresh ideas and speed, and popular European small car models, which is what Fiat has at this time. It is quite possible that the idea that Americans do not like small cars may turn out to be not true. The market is changing and the demographics and economic situation is changing dramatically, cost conscious Americans may like to have a popular small car. Americans with larger cars may like to have a less conspicuous, and easy to drive and park car for short city driving, as their second or third car. If a economic recovery does not occur for several years and Americans downscale in everything from homes, appliances, electronics, and cars to what their European and Asian brethren are used to, both from an environmental point of view, and from a practical commonsense point of view of gettting rid of excess and extravagance, size may be sacrificed for convenience and practicality. Smaller cars are well equipped in Europe with all the comforts and electronics so small does not have to be cheap. In short in a growing small car segment, innovative design and speed of development, with quality engineering may be the ticket for Fiat and Chrysler to the American market....

Changing bank loan payments from 36 to 72 or 82 payments and bank's confidence to make new credit available at interest rates of abot 12% has created a boom in auto sales with 2.46 million cars sold in 2007, according to the National Association of Automotive Vehicle Manufacturers, and car factories operating at near or full capacity. GM showed improved results last quarter largely on the basis of its Brazilian operations profits. Inflation at yearend 2007 was 4.5% and Brazil is experiencing a boom based on its commodity exports of iron ore, and other commodities. Foreign investment doubled last year to $34.6 billion, much of it going into the stock market, and the Brazilian currency is strong. And the Lula administration has also put money int he hand os the poor in Brazil so that the boom is more equally shared. The increase in availability of credit is in high double digits for everything from cars, and homes to consumer items like washing machines and televisions, because its starting from a low base as is true of most of Latin America where because of high inflation and interest rates banks were reluctant to lend and borrowers could not afford the high interest rates. Now home mortgages are available for 12% and car loans for 14%, still high but much better by Brazilian standards with extended payment terms. About 20 million more people are able to buy on credit with this new availability of credit according to Mr. Ferreira, President of the National Association of Credit, Financing and Investment Institutions. If interest rates drop further this boom will get new momentum as even more people will be attracted to buying on credit. The volume of outstanding credit in Brazil in February was 35% of GDP, the is compares to eurozone numbers of 116% for domestic credit to the private sector according to the World Bank figures for 2006, and 201% in the USA and 419% in Japan. Mr. Ferreira predicts that the proportion of personal debt to GDP would rise from 38% to 40% this year and increase by 3% each year to 2013....

Toyota seeing the American market in sharp decline has finally realized the need to build up manufacturing capacity in India. Today it ranks seventh in sales in India behind Suzuki and Honda. Its market share actuallly slipped in 2003 to 3.5% from 4.7% partly because it neglected having a lowpriced small car in its lineup. Toyota sees the Indian market growing in the long term even though it is slowing down this year with effects of the global credit and economic crisis. In 2007 Toyota sold 54,000 vehicles in India. It now plans to increase sales to 400,000 vehicles by 2015 or about 10% of the projected passenger car market of 4 million vehicles by 2015. To do this it plans to add new models, including a lower cost car and open a plant with capacity of 100,000 vehicles a year. It is also opening a Technical Training Institute. In September Honda plans to open a technical college. And other carmakers have formed partnerships with India's technical institutes for training. What it hopes to do is instill lessons of discipline, for instance exercizes are part of the routine and inspections are made at morning exercizes to ensure that hair, uniform and other details conform to Toyota standards. It teaches subjects like math, English and Japanese as well as teaching skills in welding auto assembly and maintenance. And it teaches lessons in company principles of eliminating waste, continuous improvement and consensus building. And it teaches hard work and resilience with one sign on the campus reading "small drops of water make a mighty ocean", reminding one of the power of small individual efforts combined and organized over long periods of time to build great things, like Toyota's own efforts from its humble beginnings from scratch in the thirties. To get the right kind of person for training Toyota looks for about 180 junior high school graduates from poor farming families from a large pool of applicants, who would be open to new ideas and training, and have the right kind of temperament and discipline and intelligence to make good factory employees in a Toyota type production system of continuous improvement and cooperative effort....

Of the DJT plan US has tariff based revenues of 10--15% for all countries imports into US can that it redirect to groups to soften any effects of tariffs. DJT administration oil transition policy of stretching out the transition to give middle class and lower classes cost of living relief was also accepted by the Biden administration and is now the policy of Democrat run California state government.  The US economy was slowing in 2024 under the Biden administration. This has led to increase in the value of market portfolios of the income earners above 250,000, or 10% of American households. As this happens the process of trade renegotiation has introduced some uncertainty in 2025 and businesses are looking for more clarity before increasing investment and slowing job hiring which hurts younger people entering the job market and lower income Americans. Were things better under Biden? Government Covid assistance and payouts in the early years 2020-2021 helped lower income workers, as this faded and the cost of living autos, housing increased sharply under Biden in 2022-2024 the situation deteriorated. The situation today is similar to the situation in 2024 with the difference in 2025 that inflation is coming down just as government help is receding. And added factor is the DJT administration plan to tackle head on the increasing cost of Medicaid to about $1 trillion by adding new requirements and reducing subsidies. The federal workforce had a disproportionate share of black workers and the policy changes to reduce the federal workforce have increased black unemployment from 6.1% under Biden in August 2024 to 7.5 % a year later. Hispanics have seen slight improvement in unemployment to 5.3% in 2025, and the middle class incomes also have held up and are holding steady. Honda plans to build a new plant in the midwest, with an investment of $400 million. The new plant is likely to make Civic compact cars and the new Fit subcompact. The Fit will be a new hybrid deisgned to compete against Toyota's Prius. Honda opened its minivan plant in Lincoln, Alabama in 2001, and prior to that a new assembly plant opened in 1989. Expensive new fuel saving technology investments at BMW to meet new pollution control standards in Europe (130 grams per kilometer) and boost fuel efficiency in the US. This year only 40% of its cars will meet 140 grams per kilometer. With a production total of 1.4 million cars BMW faces sizable investments with smaller car volume than the likes of Toyota and Honda. R&D costs have climbed 22% in first half 2007 to 1.5 billion euros. BMW has agreements to jointly develop some of the new technology with Daimler and GM on hybrid gasoline-electric drive cars. The European carmakers also plan to bring cars to the U..S. that are economically priced and have luxury features. White points out that baby boomer buyers in their fifties and sixties are particularly careful to compare these cars with the luxury features on a moderately priced Accord and Taurus, and can see any flaws in the near-luxury cars which indicate compromise such as afour cylinder engine or manual controls where electronic controls are expected. Will Detroit automakers be able to respond to a change in consumer preferences and a shift to cars from SUV's and light trucks? Gasoline prices are expected to rise significantly in 2011, and could approach $4 a gallon. The Detroit carmakers are better prepared now than in 2008. The question is are they prepared enough considering that there was a renewed emphasis on light trucks and SUV's in the lineup of Detroit carmakers in 2010, and compared to Asian competitors in the market whose focus is still on cars. To rebound to profitability GM and Ford took advantage of a pickup in SUV and light truck sales. Chrysler benefitted from a revamped Jeep Cherokee. All three Detroit carmakers sold more light trucks and SUV's than cars in 2010, and GM's car sales went down in 2010. By comparison Toyota and Honda sold more cars than SUV's and light trucks in 2010, and Hyundai does not make any light trucks. Toyota brand US sales head, Bob Carter, says as vehicles are becoming more fuel efficient across all sizes he does not expect the impact to be as dramatic as in 2008. The impact of fuel prices is becoming evident at some Toyota dealerships where sales of Prius vehicles are up significantly. In 2007 before a gas price surge SUV and truck sales were at 53% in the US market, they were down to 47% in 2009, and are now back up to 50%....

Cyrus Mistry, who is 43 years old, head of the Shapoorji Pallonji Group, a construction company, will be the new CEO of Tata Sons. He was a board director of Tata Sons for several years. His father is the largest shareholder in Tata Sons with an 18% stake in the company. Mistry, who comes from the same Mumbai based Parsi families as the founder and previous heads of Tata Sons, studied civil engineering at the Imperial College in London and management at the London Business School. He is an Irish national because of his father's marraige to an Irish woman. The previous chairman of Tata Sons before Ratan Tata, J.R.D. Tata, who ran the company for most of the postwar period, also had a similiar background, as J.R.D.'s father married a French woman. By virtue of its acquisition of the steel company Corus Group, and the acquisition of Jaguar-Land Rover, Tata Sons is now the largest manufacturing company in the U.K., in addition to being one of the largest and most well known companies in India. About 58% of sales now come from overseas. Companies in the Tata Group include Tata Consultancy (IT), Tata Motors (autos), Tata Steel (steel), and a range of other businesses in India. Jeremy Grantham and Jason Zweig share the view that this market has gone up too fast too quickly. Stocks that went down the fastest of companies in industries like finance and banking, insurance and autos, went back up with government support. And many of these companies that have poor earnings prospects are issuing more shares to raise capital now that the credit markets are working, so that they have some cushion if credit markets tighten again. Grantham thinks this dilution of shares spreads future earnings thin over a larger number of shares. Zweig says whatever was garbage has done good, which suggests that what is seen as a recovery in the stock markets is not perceived as a healthy recovery. Grantham's comment that "the junky companies may be diluted to hell just to keep them alive," and Zweig's comment that these "garbage" stocks are hot, but can be expected to sink for precisely that reason, do not offer a reassuring view of this kind of fragile recovery. Companies with stable businesses and stable earnigs prospects haven't done as well as these so called "garbage" businesses to use Zweig's term. Companies like Microsoft, Procter and Gamble and Johnson, and Wal-Mart which have low debt and stable returns. Grantham sees them as offering value in today's market. ...
