Amazon's revenue for 4th quarter 2011 increased 35% to $17.4 billon. Profit for the 4th quarter 2011 declined by 57% over prior year quarter, as Amazon increased hiring, and invested in warehouses, technology and in Kindle electronic promotional sales. Operating expenses were up 38% from the prior year quarter. Operating margin was 1.5%, declining from 3.8% in the prior year quarter, but up from 0.7% in third quarter 2011. Analysts estimate that Amazon sells the Kindle at a loss of $15 per unit. Kindle Fire sales were up to an estimated 6 million units for the 4th quarter 2011. Hiring jumped and employee count was up 67% for 2011 over the prior year, up to 56,200 employees. Forrester Research estimates that overall internet sales growth for 2011 was 10%, showing that Amazon sales growth was much faster.

Apple's sales in India are insignificant because of the lack of 3G networks. RIM's Blackberry and apps work well on the existing 2G networks. Prices are higher with the cheapest iPhone costing $705 at a Reliance iStore. The cheapest iPad 2 goes for $603. Blackberry phones cost less than $200. As a result Apple's iPhone sales are only 2.6% of India's smartphone shipments for the 2nd quarter 2011. RIM's is 15%, Samsung Electronic's is 21%, and Nokia's 46%, according to IDC. RIM is extending its distribution in India from 15 cities in 2010 to 80 cities in 2011. IDC estimates that smartphone shipments in India will grow by 68% a year, reaching 81.5 million units by 2015.

The failure of Nintendo's new handheld 3DS video game device to win market acceptance. Sales dropped to 710,000 in the last 3 months from 3.6 million the prior quarter. Nintendo has now made a big price cut from $250 to $170. The entire videogame industy is going through a transformation where a closed platform like Nintendo's is facing obsolescence. Today any device with a screen and an internet connection can work for videogaming. Companies such as Zynga have Facebook games such as "Farmville" and "Cityville." Mobile and social games are $1 or $5 and often free when they have advertising within the games. They can be readily acccessed instantly by downloading, Contrast that with Nintendo games for 3DS which can sell for $30 to $40. Nintendo has sold over 87 million Wiis and 147 million DS devices. But the sales are dropping precipitiously. Wii sales dropped to 1.56 million in the most recent quarter compared to 3.04 million in the prior year, and DS sales fell to 1.44 million from 3.15 million, according to Nintendo. As a whole game sales in retail stores including hardware and software are declining down to $995 million in June 2011 from $1.111 billion for the same month prior year, according to NPD Group. Microsoft continues to see an increase in its Xbox gaming business- with a 30% increase in sales to $1.49 billion for the last quarter for the division with the Xbox business. One reason is that this is a group of hard core gaming customers who prefer shooting and sports games including the use of a camera device called Kinect where body movements are used by players. In that manner this business is insulated from the overall trend where game developers are shifting to new technologies and developemnts such as Facebook and iPhone. Electronic Arts is focussing on the fast growth for popular games on the iPad....

By the second half of 2010 Google plans to have netbooks running on its Chrome Operating System. It will be an open source operating system. Google already has the Android operating system for mobile devices. Chrome OS is designed speciically for netbooks which are seen as an opportunity to enter the market. Chrome will fit into an internet centric view of computing where software is delivered over the web.

S. Korea's Ministry of Science, ICT, and Future Planning setup in 2013 and the 15 year plan to promote internet startups. The purpose of the plan is to persuade new graduates that opportunities exist outside the big conglomerates like Samsung and provide new resources for startups. Five ministries in S. Korea are engaged in this effort and have budgeted a total of $3 billion to help tech developers.

Germany's investment in defense and infrastructure will see major increases under Merz/Kingsbiel CDU/SPD coalition government, borrowing in 2029 are 4 time levels in 2024 to finance a massive wave of investment. These investments were held off under Merkels government of the CDU from 2005 to 2021 and under the four year term of SPD's Scholz. A lot of damage is done by such disinvestment in the German economy from childcare and housing to transportation and internet infrastructure, to defense. It was part of the program of the Greens and Social Democrats under Scholz's government 2021-2024 but was stalled by finance minister Christian Lindner of the Free Democrats who was not fired until 2024 and who lost his seat and the FDP's presence in parliament in the 2025 elections for his role. Lindner's support of the constitutional debt brake set up by Merkel is seen as depriving Germany of the modernization of its infrastructure and the economy.  Germany's defense budget is set to more than double by 2029, increasing to €152.8 billion ($177 billion). Net borrowing will  significantly increase in the draft budget.  €81.8 billion in 2025, up from €33.3 billion in 2024. €89.3 billion in 2026, €87.5 billion in 2027, €115.7 billion in 2028 and €126.1 billion in 2029 or 4 times the level of 2024. The principal achievement in 2025 by Merz was to remove the constitutional debt brake of Merkel/Lindner and make modernization of infrastructure and defense a top priority of the Merz/Kingbeil CDU/SPD government. ...

Note the shift to internet based access and use of software. this is happening already in information access, which Google does over the internet. When it comes to applications we see the traditional model of installed software for Microsoft and Oracle. So there is a gap for someone larger and with the resources to make it work to come into this gap and use it to get a lead over its competitors. This maybe what SAP is about to do. The pricing of the software is at $149 oer user per month and the target is to increase customers to 100,000 by 2010 double its present customer base. The project is called Business ByDesign and 12,300 out of 61,000 developers at SAp are working on this new software. About $560 million will go into marketing and getting it off the ground to users.

There is higher participation today in the process of choosing candidates than ever before even as mediums including the internet have become increasingly fragmented. Candidates in 2024 have to reach many smaller groups of demographics by race, gender, education, ages groups over television and radio than ever before. 

244 million people over the age of 18 will participate in choosing between Harris and Trump in 2024 and for the US Congress.

71% of white voters voted compared to 59% for non white voters. Only 54% of Latinos voted in 2020. Youngest voters 18 years to 29 years participation in 2016 was very low just 39%, it increased to 50% in 2020.

Revenues at the printing division declined by 7% in the fiscal year ending in Jan 2012 compared to the prior year. Operating profit margins in the printing division have declined to 12.2%. Steve Lee Myers reporting from Moscow and St. Petersburg, Jo Becker from Washington and London, and Jim Yardley from Nicosia, Cyprus, provide this extraordinary and exceptional report on the rise of a small group of friends, mostly from Mr. Putin's time in St. Petersburg, into a new sort of oligarchy replacing the old one under Mr. Yeltsin. This includes more familiar names such as Sechin at Rosneft, but also less familiar names such as Mr. Kovalchuk, chairman of Bank Rossiya, which owns major television and radio stations and newspapers in Russia. M. Kovalchuk is described as having acquired many of these media properties at a fraction of their real value. Bank Rossiya assumed management of assets of Gazprombank, and Gazprom bank purchased Gazprom Media with five television and a number of radio stations for $166 million, when Medvedev, a Putin associate put the value at $7.5 billion 2 years following the acquisition, according to this report. Other assets acquired in this manner include Channel 5 and Ren TV, giving Putin's inner circle control of the media and reducing any critical or different views on issues facing Russia. Many of Gazprom's assets were transferred to Bank Rossiya, say critics, including insurer Sogaz which was acquired for $100 million, later valued at $2 billion, says the report. Names on the this inner circle also include Yakunin, head of Russian Railways, also include names like Fursenko and Timchenko. Most of the people in this inner circle are now targets of western sanctions. Missing in this report is mention that that this inner circle of the second term as president replaces the larger circle of the first terms as president and prime minister, with Putin benefitting from experts and advisors in the first terms. That circle included Finance minister Kudrin known for his successful management of the economy, and others who left the administration after flawed parliamentary elections. Even prime minister Medvedev is not mentioned as part of this inner circle, suggesting a degree of isolation which could be perilous for the Russian economy as it deprives the Russian president of different opinion and useful advice. This is a pattern seen in many emerging market countries which experience corruption during the period of industrial development. A pattern seen also in China under the Communist Party. And in Venezuela where a new Bolivarist class was created. In emerging market democracies such as India and Turkey the problem is also present, except that in India the recent open election led to the ouster of the Congress led government with many cases of corruption in its second term. A similiar election led to a new government in Indonesia, showing that there is another way beyond the Putin Way. Behind the protests in Hong Kong and in Russia, as well as in India, were the huge gaps in wealth and the growing inequality, corruption, lack of responsiveness of ruling governments. In Russia this takes another dimension with efforts to control the internet and media, and efforts to spread this style of democracy. This has created problems in the Putin government's relations with western nations having open societies and free media, and unwilling to accept a distorted model of democracy. Another less noticed aspect of the evolution of these emerging markets is that upto a point development proceeds even accelerates even in the presence of corruption, and then reaches a point where development and growth slows with problems of corruption, mismanagement of resources, declining productivity, economic and political errors, or unfavorable external environment. India faced this problem in 2012-2013, Russia is likely to face this in 2015, and China faces the prospect of growth slowdown by 2016. This feature of emerging markets also reminds one of the frequently quoted old English saying by Lord Acton- "Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely." An idea also attributed to William Pitt the Elder who said- "unlimited power tends to corrupt the minds of those who possess it." ...

Xiaomi, a maker of smartphones in China, traded for about US$2.15 per share on the Hong Kong stock market on July 9, 2018 after its IPO. Xiaomi was valued at US$43 billion, about half of the value that was expected. Reasons given by experts are that Xiaomi is one of a number of smartphone makers in the highly competitive Chinese market. Xiaomi has about half of its sales in India and other countries where it sells low cost smartphones with more value based on features included. Problems that it experienced in Brazil in connecting with national carriers made investors cautious about Xiaomi's market position in other developing countries. Limiting its profitability is its position as a hardware maker in a competitive market, without the profitability of other internet companies. Xiaomi surged in the last decade in China as a local producer of smartphones that provided features of more expensive brands at a lower price. A recovery in Intel's business of making microprocessors for PC's. Computer demand from corporate customers, medium and small businesses is increasing. Intel showed a 40% increase in profit for the 2nd quarter of 2014. Demand for tablets is softening and buyers are using large smartphones instead of the smaller tablets. Intel CEO Krzanich, says the installed base of PC's that is about 4 years old is about 600 million strong, and is refreshing for these business customers. Intel is also shipping chips for tablets with plans to ship chips for 40 million tablets in 2014. The Internet of Things group, making chips for non-computer devices, showed an increase of 24% in revenue. So far Intel shares are up 20% in the first half of 2014. Intel plans to add $20 billion to its stock buyback plan and plans to repurchase about $4 billion of its shares in the 3rd quarter of 2014.

Peter Funt points to the time before the internet when daily papers were delivered and radio carried the news between music, and it was hard not have it rub off while hearing the radio or glancing at the sports pages. This rub-off effect meant that even by casual listening or accidentally people got the news. Before cable television the news came from nightly and evening general interest news broadcasts. People usually caught the major news at dinner time or before bedtime as most entertainment broadcasting paused for news broadcasts. By contrast in today's environment news is pulled on the internet home page only from the sources and topics one has selected, or watching one of the 24 cable channels that are essentially covering a liberal or conservative agenda, leaving people less informed about current events except in ways that reinforce one's opinions or biases. Others get their news from tweets, or social media. Funt call this a complete inversion of the traditional process of getting news- where the traditional process was to combine what people wanted to see and ought to see, the new process was to give what people wanted to see. Add to this competitive pressures and budget cuts, and news was shifting by design and intent to what people wanted or were likely to click on frequently, even on sites like BBC News with proliferation of trivia. The net result- there is too much which poses as "news" but is not news such as trivia, less coverage of news, and as the title of this article suggests, too much media and too little general news to shed light on events that affect our daily lives. Funt was writing in 2009, when Google News and Facebook News Feed were just getting started. By 2016, this inversion was causing serious alarm because of the way misinformation was becoming prevalent. This article reminds one that this was not always the case, this is something that has developed only in the last couple of years- that it is not a constructive development, and which we now realize can have a disruptive effect on democracy through spread of misinformation. Funt cites Scripps News slogan- "Give light and the people will find their own way," - that there is a role for traditional general news in our daily lives which informs and lets us form our own opinions afterwards,  that the social media news feeds on the internet run by algorithms or 24 hour cable news channels run for conservative or liberal agendas is not a subsitutute,  that most of us can use the help of good editors, and good broadcasters.       ...

A major shift in public opinion happened between 1990 in the public's perception and tolerance of gay people and gay marraige. Support for gay marraige in Journal/NBC News polling shows young people, especially people 18-34 year old, were leading the way. In this group support for gay marraigne increased from 47% in 2009 to 57% in 2012, going up to 74% in March 2015. The increase is also shown in suburban residents, political independents, Midwesterners and Hispanics. A key factor in the change is that many people now know of one person in their work or personal lives who is gay. Technology, television and internet media also helped changed attitudes. In 1990 7 of 8 Americans said sexual relations between the same sex were wrong. In 2004 only 3 of ten Americans supported same sex marraige. A vote in Maine shows the dramatic shift- in 2009 same sex marraige was rejected by 53%, in 2012 53% approved it. The change in attitudes is faster than happened for miscegenation, which took 30 years after the Supreme Court ruled against anti-miscegenation laws to reach a point where a majority of Americans approved marraiges between black and white people. The Supreme Court's 5-4 decision on June 25, 2015, now makes gay marraige legal in all 50 states, and strikes down bans in Michigan, Ohio, Kentucky, and Tennessee. Yet there are a significant number of Americans who do not favor same sex marraige especially in southern states such as Texas, Kentucky, South Carolina, Tennessee, Alabama. A Pew Research Center poll shows 73% of white evangelical Protestants do not approve of same sex marraige. Other groups who do not favor same sex marraige in the Pew polling are conservatives and persons born before the post World War baby boom. ...

Bob Pittman, CEO of radio company Clear Channel, a veteran from the AOL days, and his plans to reinvent the radio business. Radio now commands 6% of advertising revenues compared to 50% for television. His plan is to push that figure up. Radio advertising was up just 1% to $17.4 billion in 2011, according to Radio Advertising Bureau. In addition to the internet and satellite radio, new streaming music services such as Pandora and Spotify will make this difficult. Clear Channel is also struggling with $20 billion in debt.

The children's commissioner in the UK says the internet is a powerful and positive resource, but social media is a negative force from which children need protection for mental health that is fast and effective. Anne Longfield was responding to the comments of the NHS head Simon Stevens who stated that the web giants are "fuelling" a crisis and should come under tough scrutiny. Many experts see social media as a negative force, especially for children. Not taken up yet is the crisis in reading and reading comprehension that leaves about half of children in schools and students in high school without adequate reading skills- with about half of school children not meeting the reading comprehension requirements of the ACT test for 2016. Social media and smartphones have cut into reading time in schools, in ways that were never anticipated with iPads for reading not making a difference. Lee Cheuk-yan, chairman of the pro-democracy Labor Party, describes the 17 year old Wong and young people in high schools to a crowd in Hong Kong in this way- these are very young faces, the old men in Hong Kong including many in the elite who dared not to speak up for Hong Kong's cherished traditions and rights out of caution will die, but these young people will carry on. Wong started the group Scholarism as an internet based movement to fight the 2012 "patriotic classes" plan of the Communist Party and Hong Kong Chief Executive Leung Chun-ying. That movement took hold in Hong Kong and the government had to shelve the plan. This time he is fighting for universal suffrage in Hong Kong in 2017 with the right to elect its own leaders without prescreening by the Communist Party. This is in the spirit of the Basic Law, former Hong Kong Governor Chris Patten tells the BBC. Patten helped negotiate the transfer agreement for Hong Kong and handled the transfer in 1997. In August 2014 China changed this intent leading to protest demonstrations. Wong is of Protestant parents who helped stir in him a sense of opposing social injustice. Beyond Hong Kong there is something else at work- a sense that the new leaders in Beijing are choosing the Putin Way that sees these demonstrations as inspired by foreign forces and treating all NGO's as foreign agents. In a larger sense the old leaders are living in a past world of territorial gains and keeping tight grip on power, when the world is now interdependent economically and politically, with change requiring new approaches to problems. The presence of 15 year old high school students and very young generation suggests no such foreign interference, as most of these students are very young....

According to Kirchhoff it has 1.4 million people, 90% of whom are women, attending meetings each week all over the world. Online business is surging, with an average of 1.8 million additional subscribers for the first 3 quarters of 2011. In the first 3 quarters of 2011 the online business showed gains of 70%. Estimates are for the online business to generate $400 million in revenues and $200 million in operating income in 2011. Today 65% of the business is in the U.S. and a large part of the rest is in Europe. Kirchhoff sees new opportunities in China, where poor lifestyles- the use of the internet instead of being outdoors, and the increased access to all kinds of food- is creating a surge in obesity.

The departure of Steven Sinofsky, who headed the development efforts for Windows 7 introduction in 2009 and Windows 8 in 2012. His departure after 23 years at Microsoft comes after hardware companies working with Microsoft and other teams inside Microsoft described difficulties in working with Sinofsky. Microsoft CEO Ballmer referred to this lack of collaboration with other senior executives and polarizing nature, when he called for more "alignment across all Microsoft teams." Sinofsky was made a techncal assistant by Bill Gates in the early years and helped Gates recognize the importance of the world wide web in internet software development.

This NYT editorial says that before he was elected Mexico's president Nieto, with his book "Mexico- The Great Hope," (Mexico- La Gran Esperanza)presented himself as a candidate who would transform Mexico. Yet says NYT three years into his administration it has turned out to be very different, with no effort to clear up the questions about the murder of 43 students in Guerrero state. Economic growth has not matched the hopes generated after the Pacto de Mexico was approved and new legislation limiting monopolies passed. The slump in oil prices has led to limited results following the opening up of the oil industry to foreign investment. The result is an administration increasingly unpopular in Mexico and failing to deliver on the hope generated in the early months of Pena Nieto's administration. Many of the tasks for transition of Mexico to a modern economy- free of monopolies, crime, a better education system, economic growth in all parts of the country, remain unrealized. During his term as governor of the state of Mexico 2011-2015, Pena Nieto's main achievement was the 608 Compromisos or promises which were placed on the internet website tracking progress on the health, infrastructure, highway and other projects. During the current administration the early results were achieved in the first year through agreement with the rival PAN party for the Pacto de Mexico, to reduce monopolies and open up the oil industry which had falled behind technologically with lack of investment. Since then the progress has been slow, the one bright spot being the auto industry with increased foreign investment. Regional disparities persist with the Bajio region, and the areas around Queretaro, Aguascalientes, near Mexico City growing fastest. Pena Nieto won the 2012 election with 38% of the vote mostly from this region, the incumbent PAN party at 25%, and the left front Of Lopez Obrador 32% drawing support from less developed areas in the south and the rest of the country. Just as the earlier Atenco protests and police action to clear protesters blocking land acesses by the state for expansion of Mexico City's airport, and the Soy 132 student protest movement during Pena Nieto's term as Governor of State of Mexico 2011-2015 affected perception of his administration, the murder of students at Guerrero affects perception of this administration. Nieto comes from the upper sections of the PRI as the nephew of two former governors of the state of Mexico, has a law degree from the Ibero-American University, and a masters degree in business administration from ITAM....
