The wildly political nature of the events following spending cuts by Republican Governor Walker is seen in the recall elections for 6 Republican and 2 Democratic legislators. Only four such recall elections were held in Wisconsin in all the years since 1926, showing the extent to which the state is divided on the cuts and the rhetoric preceding the cuts. Interest is being shown from outside the state by unions and other interest groups on both sides. As part of the campaign about $30 million is being spent by outside groups filling the airwaves all the way into Minnesota.

A rapid increase in the number of Russians with favorable views of the US going up past 30% as one sign of the effort to improve US Russia relations by Trump and Putin is seen in March 2025. A call by Trump to Putin will take place March 18, 2025 to start discussions on how to settle the Ukraine conflict including land, power plants and exchanges and getting to the root cause of the war- NATO expansion. Some solutions include NATO being disbanded in its current form as archaic as there is no Soviet Union, its original goal being stopping Soviets from setting pro- Soviet governments, setup in Czechoslovakia and attempts to do this in Greece and Turkey. Truman formed NATO for this purpose in 1949 after the Berlin Blockade by Soviets. WIth nuclear arsenals being replenished in Russia and China, India, Japan, small nuclear states such as North Korea, Pakistan, the situation is different today with responsible policies needed today on this issue which are impeded by the idea of NATO on the borders of Russia and the Eastern European and British view of Russia as the pre-eminent threat not shared by India, Brazil, China and the new administration of DJT in the US. A long period of peaceful coexistence and arms control developed in the late 1960's, 1970's and 1980's between the US, German Federal Republic and Soviet Union/ GDR Germany. ...

Senator Rubio, Republican nominee for Secretary of State, is given good points by the Wash. Post for helping negotiate a 2013 bipartisan deal on immigration that passed the Senate but could not pass in the US House of Representatives. And for his willingness to compromise.

On Ukraine and Eastern Europe after the invasion of Ukraine Rubio with Sen. Tim Kaine (D-Virginia) inserted an amendment into 2023 defense authorization bill that prevents any president from withdrawing from NATO unless two thirds of the Senate agrees.

Mervy King, Governor of the Bank of England and his position on the recent mortgage crises, rate cuts , moral hazard in the UK economy. Debate about his standing on principle and having to take action anyway as the crisis deepens as at Northern Rock. His approach contrasted with Bernanke's approach to reduce the damage and still focus on inflation. The issues where a principled stand may not be educated enough in the interests of the whole economy, and all the people in society who may be damaged by a principled approach if a crisis has devastating effects on unemployment, investment and confidence; even though some of those who helped build the crisis are helped along the way. Is the idea of a bailout and moral hazard taken at the surface too simplistic in the modern world with the economic fate of all mankind intertwined with the US economy and the other industrialized and leading economies of the world. Is it impossible to punish a few without punishing the whole? Are their other ways those involved would be chastised such as the CEO's of financial institutions losing their jobs, companies losing their reputation, being disciplined as new CEO's like Pandit at Citigroup and Thain at Merrill Lynch provide new leadership? ...

Britain's National Health Service has setup a medical review of gender treatment of young people. It's conclusion after 4 years of research- "The reality is that we have no good evidence on the long-term outcomes of interventions to manage gender-related distress.” This NHS review found no clear proof that  gender dysphoria in children or teenagers was resolved or alleviated by what is called gender-affirming care, where a child's declared “gender identity” is affirmed and supported with social transition, puberty blockers and/or cross-sex hormones. After Cass the British government issued an emergency ban on puberty blockers for children under age 18. A similar approach is being taken in the Scandinavian countries, and in Netherlands, France, Germany, Belgium, Switzerland, the move is away from medical treatment of gender issues. American medicine, Cass says is “out of date,” and has put politics ahead of science. Not one American medical association or governmental official has reached out to discuss Britian's Cass report. Says Cass- “I think that’s where you’re misleading the public. You need to be honest about the strength of the evidence and say what you’re going to do to improve it.”   ...

The coronavirus surge in southern states in the U.S. is different from the surge earlier in the northeast including New York and New Jersey. More young people are getting the virus. About half of those testing positive are now 18-35 years of age in Texas and Florida. Social distancing and masks is not mandatory with young people not practicing these safety guidelines. Many took the reopening to mean they could go back to the usual summer routines. Not taking it seriously is leading to more infections of young people. Cultural issues with practicing the guidelines and a tendency to not take it seriously has been a problem in the U.S. and parts of Europe since the beginning of the crisis leading to larger number of cases.

The first Democratic debate for the presidential election of 2016 gives Hillary Clinton a huge boost. Democratic voters find her to be more convincing in the debate than Sanders. Without Biden in the race a Oct 2015 ABC News/Washington Post poll shows Clinton draws 64 percent support among Democrats, and Sanders 25 percent, with O'Malley, Webb and Chafee less than 2%. Even on questions such as who "is closer to you" on the issues, who "understands the problems of people like you," Clinton beats Sanders by 53-36 percent and 51-37 percent in the poll. On honesty she is about even with Sanders. The careful low key approach getting a feel for the voters and their concerns appears to be paying off for Hillary Clinton where it really counts. The picture of Clinton in the media accounts is not affecting Democratic voters.

Emily Glazer of the WSJ interviews Clorox CEO, Don Knauss. Knauss talks about his strategy to focus on the U.S. and Latin American markets and not make a costly effort to enter markets in Asia. He sees competition intensity in Asia and Brazil as much higher today with P&G and Lever focussing on these markets. Clorox is concentrating on brands known for being environmentally friendly such as its Green Works line of cleaners, Brita water filters, and products of acquired companies such as Burt's Bees. Knauss describes the Hispanic consumers preference for Clorox and Pine Sol for cleaning and the use of bleach 70% for cleaning. Hispanics use 25% more bleach than other consumers and prefer fragrances such as lavender for Pine Sol. These are some of the insights the company is using to maintain its penetration in this market.

Is there a lesson in this for the Detroit automakers who have too many dealerships. See related article on the dealership numbers for the Big Three vs. the like of Toyota and Honda. Deere has gone from 3400 dealerships to 2984 dealerships, down 12% in ten years since 1996, so it appears to be a gradual decline, and dealerships are consolidating with stronger partners, or selling out to stronger partners. The number of owners has shrunk at a much faster pace. (Why are auto dealerships able to take this to the courts and not Deere dealerships, as is mentioned in the related auto dealership article? ) Much of this reflects search for improved profitability and stability in a very cyclical industry. Fewer distribution outlets owners and better management of inventory, better parts service with better techically trained staff, and bringing new technology and designs to improve the revenue generating capacity of each machine by reducing demand for expensive labor, is a shrewd way of managing this business. A $100 million dealer organization can better service what is becoming a high tech product, a better hire technically trained people, and better manage inventory. With this setup Deere probably can better manage production to match demand and not let inventory clutter the dealer lots for discounted clearence. ...
