Estimates by the Congresssional Budget Office in January 2011 show the federal budget deficit in the US at nearly $1.5 trillion in 2011. The deficit would equal 9.8% of the US gross domestic product. In 2009 the budget deficit was $1.4 trillion or 10% of GDP. The CBO estimates show the debt held by the public increasing from 40% of GDP at the end of fiscal year 2008 to about 70% at the end of fiscal year 2011. Republican senators Orrin Hatch of Utah and John Cornyn of Texas called for a constitutional balanced budget amendment in an op-ed published in Politico.

Google has the lowest share of the search market in South Korea- 2%. This has prompted Google to follow the leading search portals in South Korea. Whats different in South Korea is that people say they go to a home page to see the news, and topics that are popular with fellow users. NHN and Daum the leading portals present users with home pages that look more like those of media outlets than asearch engine. They give latest news, photos, videos and updated lists of highly trafficked blogs and popular online chat sites. First they look at this information, then they start a search. NHN Naver has 66% of search queries, Daum 21% and SK Telecom's Nate 6%. Yahoo Korea 3%, Google 2%. Daum and Naver have created vast databases of popular content and link to them first. A search for lung cancer will show information from articles acquired or commissioned from Korean doctors and hospitals. Its adiffernt approach and it works in South Korea. The local elections in Turkey with the AKP winning 46% of the vote, the CHP 28%, after 80% of the votes were counted on March 30, 2014. The AKP retained control of the mayors position in Istanbul where Erdogan made his start in politics. With a little less than half the vote going to opposition parties and the suppression of the media by the Erdogan government, Turkey remains as divided as ever. Turkey's economic boom on which Erdogan stakes his claim to govern has depended on a credit boom based on foreign capital inflows and foreign investment. The crisis in emerging markets has reduced foreign capital inflows, the political divisions have reduced inflows even further, creating serious economic risks for Turkey that Erdogan and AKP appear to be oblivious to.

Auto sales in the U.S. reached 1.33 million vehicles in May, a 25% increase over the previous year, with the previous years figures skewed by the tsunami in Japan and shortages for Japanese manufacturers. The seasonally adjusted annual sales rate was 13.8 million vehicles. Employment increased to 644,000 workers in the U.S. auto industry, an increase in the first quarter of 2012 of 6% over the prior year, according to Bureau of Labor Statistics. The basic reason for the increased demand is the aging of cars on the road to about 10.8 years, according to vehicle registration information.

G-20 leaders in Seoul endorsed the Basel III regulations, which raise the amount of risk free capital banks have to hold to 7% of assets from as low as 2% now. The rules are to be phased in between 2013-2018, a long period, by which time there could be another crisis.The rules for banks that are "too big to fail" will be written more stringently by the Financial Stability Board. The FSB will need another year to write these rules. Mario Draghi of the Bank of Italy, heads the FSB. He is asking for more resources for the FSB to do its work.

Mexico's domestic market is growing and compacts are about half of Mexico's 1.13 vehicle market. The San Luis Potosi plant will be able to make 160,000 compact cars a year, an investment of $650 million. Some of this could go to Mexico's own need for compacts in the domestic market. Also this could supply the U.S. market where GM needs compacts to compete with Japanese and Korean models. One of the reasons Mexico is able to compete with the Southern United States is is its high quality work force at a fraction of the cost. Disparities remain after over a trillion dollars were invested to improve conditions in East Germany, yet the positive changes are visible. In this city of Erfurt the burning of lowgrade coal for heating homes made the air less breathable. It could take years just to buy a car. Still Germans in the east are disappointed, as their expectations were high during reunification. Wages in the east are 80% of wages in the west and unemployment is 12%, and the average wealth of east Germans is 40% lower than west Germans. Young people have immigrated to the west, leaving older people and retirees. Because of this the term reunification is less used than the term "die Wende"- meaning the turn or the change. A sense of the loss of the old values forged in a socialist state is still felt deeply by some east Germans and the change has been largely positive but wrenching in terms of a loss of identity, a sense of being treated as immigrants in their own country....

The air quality around Chinese cities is worsening because of coal fired plants and increasing demand for energy, and because of exhaust from automobiles filling the highways. The air quality around Beijing violated the WHO standards more than 80% of the time during the fourth quarter 2008 period. China's Ministry of Environmental Protection says in a report that more than 25% of China's rivers, lakes and streams are too polluted to be used for drinking water. And acid rain is a problem in 200 of 440 cities it has monitored. Efforts to control the exhaust pollution from cars by putting driving restrictions in Beijing are not as effective. One report says that even after 20% of private cars are taken off the road each weekday, the 250,000 new cars that were added to Beijing's streets in the Jan-April 2010 period, have left things as bad as they were before.

US $1.5 trillion budget request for 2027 fiscal year by the president for military and defense spending is about 4.7% of US GDP forecast of $31.8 trillion in 2026. In 1960 it was 9% following the Korean War. It dropped to 3.1% of GDP by 2000 and stayed around 3.4% till the current effort to modernization of the US military is thought to require about 5% of GDP.  (World Bank charts). The US spent far higher during an earlier period reaching 14% of GDP in 1953 during the Cold War with the Soviet Union. This report shows WSJ Analysis of where the $1.5 trillion request for Defense is going-  $1.1 trillion for War Department and $350 billion for critical munitions. The munitions are in short supply and war in Iran shows that it plays a critical part in defensive systems such as intercepting of missiles as missiles in short supply affect overall capabilities. An additional $200 billion for Iran War. Pay raises for Defense personnel. $66 billion for shipbuilding- 34 ships to put the US back in the lead for shipbuilding it has lost to China, with the help of Japan which is also ramping up the shipbuilding it has lost to China. US and Japan were leading shipbuilders in the  1930's and in the 1960's, then lost it to South Korea and China. About a 12% decrease in other Department's budgets including Health and Human Services, Treasury, Commerce, Interior, Housing and Agriculture.  These cost reductions some of it coming from more efficient functioning and from concepts such as zero based budgeting where every line item in the budget gets reviewed every year for how much is needed for the purpose, is the purpose still valid, and can it be done more efficiently costing less. $660 billion is coming from the savings. The Nation's capital will also get a facelift, a major renovation, after being ignored for years. In the new Budget is $10 billion for the Presidential Capital Stewardship Program within the National Park Service for beautification projects in Washington D.C., which will give the National Capital a much needed new look for millions of visitors from the 51 states in the Union.    ...

For the first time minority babies formed a majority in 2011 with 50.4% of new babies, according to the Census Bureau. The median age of the non-Hispanic White population is 42 compared to 28 for Hispanics. Hispanics are right at the child bearing age. This also raises the issue of how the U.S. will educate the minority population. Today 13% of Hispanics have college degrees, 18% of Blacks and 31% of Whites. High school graduation rates in places like New York City for Hispanics are lagging far behind other groups. The economic downturn after the 2008 financial crisis has worsened the educational prospects for Hispanics and other minorities. The education of minority children is essential to improve the competitiveness of the U.S. in a global economy, as the educational levels in emerging markets accelerates with more opportunities.
