This is one of the few accounts of the way the Burmese military functions. But there is a lot more behind it as Burma has had a violent past after independence from Britain and violent attempts to seize power. But most of the world outside knows so little or cares little about it because of its isolation from the rest of the world. The violence against the Buddhist monasteries raises this violence to a new level and China's rulers being Communist may have no idea what they are getting into. By alienating the country and its people completely with violence against monks and monasteries is it possible China, the Burmese military's main supporter, may lose the affections of the Burmese people for generations. And China's may lose respect across Asia and the world when it has so little at stake except the illinformed view of geopolitical players that controlling regions around the world confers strength when the global economy and so many other things are important in today's world. ...

The turnaround is huge with Howard Stringer's strategy or refocussing on the main electronics business on which Sony founded itself and thrived in the post war years. Because results were so poor before this the results are huge on digital cameras , new flat panel tvs, andand other consumer electronics except videogames unit. Sales at the electronics unit increased 21%, and operating profit up by $939 million, for 3rd quarter 2007. Stringer has shed most of the non core businesses including the life insurance unit and an online bank spun off 2 weeks ago for $3 billion in an IPO, and selling some semiconductor operations to Toshiba for $800 million last week. Also gone is Aibo, the robot dog. The battery overheating recalls charges are also behind Sony. And the Sony movie studio is making profits with popular movies. These are not reflected in the announced results for 3rd quarter 2007. About $50 billion of Sony's $70 billion in worldwide sales are from electronics. Sony has tieup with Samsung in tv's and this has helped it improve results in its tv business and collaborate to combine resources where needed. Its also investing in technology with a new type of tv screen 0.12 inches thick , enabled by an organic light emitting diode display. Losses continue to mount on the Playstation 3 with losses this year of $847million and more nimble companies like Nintendo have done better in this field. sales are from electronics...

The designers finally get their say to bring a new vehicle to the market which is something quite different. Sales tends to be conservative and in this case the concept vehicle for the Flex was first shown at the 2005 International Auto Show in Detroit. Usually this is where so many people take different shots at it that by the time engineering, sales and production have modified it does'nt look the same. This is on situation in which the concept vehicle made it all the way to a production model at the New York Auto Show in 2007. The designers were able to sell it as a new kind of crossover idea to seat a family and draw customers who were dumping their large SUV's fpr other vehicles. As some designers see it a mix of the Mini Cooper and a Ford 1940's classic "Woody". Its one of the bold moves by Ford. Mulally after he took the CEo position at Ford supported the idea and its due to be in showrooms in summer 2008. The Fed acts to stabilize the credit markets till the current administration and Congress or its successor can think of the best way to inject money into the USA banking system and in helping homeowners in the housing crisis. One fact remains between 2000 and 2006 Americans took on about 3 tillion dollars of additional debt than if they had followed the earlier trajectory of spending, so they owe $3 trillion dollars more than they would have if they followed earlier spending patterns, accordingto Business Week estimate. It is this debt that will depress consumption spending for 3 to 4 years according to BW estimates till this debt can be worked down. The other estimate by BW in Street of Fear in the same issue is for $285 billion in total amount of subprime writedowns expected with only $150 billon accounted for so far in early April 2008. This means another $135 billion in writedowns will come probably this year. One anlayst Meridian of Keefe, Bruyette & Woodsfor example points outan additional $15 billion of subprime writedowns expected for Citigroup on top of the $21 billn already taken and in the worst case the writedowns could reach $60 billion. So clearly we are only half way through these writedowns. With consumption spending due for a big hit, and more big hits in the credit markets, the worst may still be ahead in 2008. ...

The epicenter of the eathquake was in Sichuan, a province of 82 million people. Most of the buildings in the capital Chengdu were intact and suffered little damage. But buildings, homes and schools in amaller towns and rural areas suffered the most damage. This is probably because most of the buildings there used subpar orr shoddy building materials and many were never inspected or followed the building codes which are poorly enforced. Because of China's rush to industrialize urbanization is taking at a rapid pace with 15 million people moving into urban areas even little towns coming out of pasturelands as well as other urban areas. A lot of housing is going up to accomodate these people and not too much attention is being paid to ensuring that the building conforms to building code except in the larger cities like Chengdu and Shanghai and Beijing. This only exposes more problems in the industrialization such as the divide between incomes in urban areas and the rual areas where 60% of China's people still live. The incomes in the rural areas have gone up 91 % between 1997 and 2007 to $590 a year or 4140 yuan, not adjusted for inflation. Urban disposable incomes rose by 150% by comparison for the same period to an average of 13,786 yuan. This 1 to 3 ratio approximately probably conceals wider disparities between cities like Beijing and Shanghai and the poorer rural towns....
