Between 2004-2011 China's steel making industry expanded rapidly leading to huge demand for metallurgical coal from the Appalachian region. In 2012 prices have dropped about 50% to $170 a ton for met coal, leading to layoffs and closing of mining operations. Patriot Coal of St. Louis filed for bankruptcy protection in 2012.
