U.S. federal government efforts through changes in programs for loan repayment to reduce the burden of $1 trillion in student debt. A weakness of the programs is that no effort is made to put some form of cap on what colleges charge for tution, which is moving ever upwards. As a result students will continue to be burdened by high debt. The loan forgiveness after 20-25 years is not an adequate solution as the writer suggests, because extending loan payments of 15% of income for such an extended period of time leaves less for buying a house, for mortgage payments, education of children, and limits what a family can spend for two decades, a poor option for any family especially when both husband and wife are paying off student debt. As long as young people with student debt defer purchases for a new home and other purchases consumer spending will be weak.

China's central bank the PBOC lowered the reserve requirement ratio for commercial banks, the amount of deposits set aside for financial safety, by half a percentage point to 19.5% on Feb. 5, 2015. The move is intended to get banks to lend more to stimulate growth. Growth is slowing in China, with GDP up 7.4% in 2014, and expected to go below 7% in 2015. With China's debt up to an estimated 282% of GDP, the PBOC has resisted efforts for monetary easing that would make the debt problems worse. The lowering of the reserve requirement ratio by half a percentage point gives commercial banks an additional 500 billion yuan or $81 billion to lend out to customers. Another 160 billion yuan comes from measures targeted at small business and agriculture. With the soft business conditions worldwide China's manufacturers may be reluctant to borrow more at this time, making it uncertain how much actual lending will take place following the move.

Peggy Noonan, quotes from "Hiroshima," by John Hersey, written one year after the disaster from the dropping of the atomic bomb on the city of Hiroshima in Japan. About 100,000 people died instantly, and another 100,000 lay sick or dying in the first moments of the bomb's explosion- as a sheet of light like the sun cut across the sky in an instant. She rightly points out that it is 70 years since the bomb was dropped, and people in a new generation no longer remember the bomb and what happened. That earlier generation struggled with the thought of the bombing for decades. Now it is only a faint memory, and Noonan does a great and profound service by reminding readers of what happened, and why they should care. In the chaotic situation of the Middle East the risks of the bomb and nuclear proliferation are a serious issue that is not getting the attention it needs. Everything stops. Life sinks into the earth. It can happen.

Pret A Manger, British sandwich chain, is planning an expansion in the U.S. by opening stores in San Francisco. The chain has stores in New York, Chicago, Washington and Boston. It has expanded rapidly in Britain with 288 stores, and has 60 stores in the U.S. It was co-founded by friends Metcalf and Beecham in 1986 at a single location near Victoria station in London. By 2000 it had opened a store in New York. McDonald's took a 33% stake in 2001. After a failed expansion in Japan with 14 stores, which brought the company close to bankruptcy, it cut costs. McDonald's sold its stake to Bridgepoint Capital in 2008. The expansion planned in the U.S. is carefully planned, with one store planned initially in San Francisco to test performance. Pret was mostly a lunch chain, it is now considering a dinner menu, with one store in London testing this. Bridgepoint now owns 66% of Pret A Manger.

The 2016 presidential election campaign is expected to lead to $10 billion in campaign spending. The Federal Election Commission is unable to take any action against campaign abuses with the commission deadlocked 3-3, with 3 Democratic members and 3 Republican members voting strictly along party lines and seeing any move by the other side as partisan. The members are not even on talking terms. Republican members see the issue in terms of First Amendment rights to free speech. The Supreme Court's decision in the 2010 Citizens United case affirmed First Amendment rights of free speech and unlimited fund raising to conduct election campaigns. The Supreme Court ruling considered corporations as associations of individuals and therefore entitled to First Amendment rights of free speech. The Court suspended the "electioneering communication" ban imposed by the Bipartisan Reform Act of 2002, allowing corporations and unions to engage in free speech electioneering during election campaigns.

The top 1% of billers get 17.5% of the payments from the U.S. Medicare program for 2012, according to the Medicare agency's reports. The Medicare agency released data with details of payments to 950,000 doctors, medical providers, certain health care companies, the second year this information is being released. This covers $90 billion of payments. Astonishing as it may sound the transparency comes late, after large increases in medical costs and the increasing U.S. deficit. It happened only after the long and persistent effort by the Wall Street Journal to overturn a 1979 ruling that required such records to be kept secret. By intervening in that suit in 2011, the WSJ's parent company Dow Jones was able to convince a judge about the need for transparency, leading to reversal of the injunction in May 2013. The WSJ and the media has used this information to monitor the waste and fraud in the Medicare system, a vital role only the media can perform to protect the public interest.

The U.S. Justice Department opens an investigation of the largest airlines, Delta, American, United Continental, and Southwest for collusion in limiting expansion. The major 4 airlines control 80% of the domestic airline seats in the U.S. The 3 major airlines have grown slowly compared to Southwest in recent years. JetBlue and Spirit are also growing faster. Southwest plans to expand by 7% in the 4th quarter. U.S. airline domestic seats show slow growth since 2010, with growth picking up in 2015 over the prior year to 3.5% in 2015, according to Innovata. For 2013 and 2014 <0.5% growth in seats, in 2012 decline of <1%, 2011 growth of less than 1%, and slight decline in 2010. During the crisis 2008-2009 airlines cut seat capacity. The U.S. Justice Department investigation will look at "possible unlawful coordination."

The ship Prelude being built in S. Korean shipyards for Royal Dutch Shell measures 1600 feet for the hull from bow to to stern. It is designed to take gas and chill it to liquid as LNG from smaller gas fields where building pipelines is not the best option. It could supply enough gas to Hong Kong for one year. The entire processing plant is on the ship replacing the cost of building costly pipelines and plants. The LNG is then put on tankers for transport. The project is expected to cost $10 billion and Shell is going ahead with it even as it is selling stakes in costly projects in Australia to control spending. The advantages are that it is not affected by the rising costs of building gas pipelines on land in Australia, growing demand for LNG in Asia, and the technological viability of this method of producing LNG on ships for smaller gas discoveries where building pipelines is too costly.

This NYT editorial says the Pfizer bid to acquire Astra Zeneca is an inversion, a tax maneouvre using openings in U.S. and British tax laws that allows an American company to incorporate in London by acquiring a British company. In effect Pfizer beomes a subsidiary of the British company. This reduces taxes owed even though business takes place at Pfizer as before. NYT says 25 companies have adopted inversions since 2008. The top corporate tax rate in Britain at 20% is lower thant the top rate of 35% in the U.S. Additional tax maoeuvres could make it easier for income shifting to tax havens, and make it possible to free up cash held in foreign countries without the need to first repatriate it to the U.S. The problem is that such maneouvres are taking place at a time of large U.S. deficits, and deep cuts in public services and government investment in R&D, infrastructure, education, that would lead to future economic growth.

Wells Fargo bank's share price reached a high of $51.90 on June 13, 2014, up 14% in Jan-June 2014. Richard Kovacevich arranged the acquisition by Norwest Corp of Wells Fargo & Co. in 1998. Wells Fargo has a 16% share of the mortgage loan business in the U.S., with $36 billion in loans for the first quarter of 2014. It is the third largest bank in deposits, with 6200 branches, the most branches of any bank in the U.S. Wells Fargo performance shows 15 quarters of uninterrupted profit growth, making it the most valued bank at the June share price. Over the last 10 years the stock price is up 76%, the best of any bank including Bank of America, JP Morgan, Citigroup and Morgan Stanley. Compared to the other banks Well Fargo has relied on its mortgage business and marketing traditional banking products aggressively through cross selling, staying away from investment banking and trading businesses.

Boeing is working out pricing on its new 777X jet to include the fuel efficiency savings made by airlines using the new aircraft. The new plane would save 20% more fuel per seat than the current 777 jets. Airlines spent $210 billion on fuel in 2012. About half the cost of a long range flight is on fuel.The Dreamliner price is at about $290 million. The 777X could be priced around $400 million, with discounts bringing this down to above $200 million for the 400 seat aircraft. Earlier pricing efforts by Boeing on the 787 Dreamliner were based on manufacturing costs going down with a significant portion of work done by suppliers. After problems in manufacturing, supplier issues and the learning curve, Boeing will take a more conservative approach to pricing this time without the steep discounts in earlier periods. In pricing the A320neo EADS passed on half of the fuel efficiency savings to buyers, and only half added to the price.

Under Blackstone private equity ownership Hilton expanded overseas, acquired the international operations, and increased room capacity and revenues. It also almost doubled the debt load to about $13.5 billion in 2013 and hit a rough patch in timing because the 2007 buyout happened close to the 2008-2009 financial crisis. About $4 billion of the debt load has been reduced by negotiating with creditors during this period. Room capacity went up from 501,000 in 2006 to 665,000 in 2013, occupancy from 72.5% to 72.3%, average daily rate from $124 to $136, and revenue from $8.2 billion to $9.4 billion. Hilton adjusted earnings before interest, taxes and depreciation were up 25% from 2010 to nearly $2 billion in 2012, according to SEC filings. Hilton now plans an IPO for the first half of 2014 to raise $1.25 to $2 billion. About 80% of rooms under construction are outside the U.S. showing the opportunities overseas Blackstone has focussed on.

The changes at Sony Pictures outlined in an interview with CEO, Michael Lynton. Sony Pictures will look for savings of $350 million. Motion Pictures showed declining revenues and revenue from TV shows increased in 2013. Sony Pictures will expand its TV shows business. Part of the expansion will be through buying and starting up new television channels in the growing markets of India and Brazil. In this interview Lynton points to the risks in seeing franchises in big budget movies before they become franchises and before the first movie in the series is successful. Smaller budget movies such as "The Conjuring," "We're the Millers," have been profitable for Sony Pictures, so he sees the tendency to focus on franchises alone as risky. Sony pioneered in producing for cable but did not see this as being a large revenue generator five years earlier. What changed Lynton says, is the increase in subscription video-on-demand services and growth in Netflix reaching new buyers.

Frenchman Christophe Weber, 47, is head of Glaxo's vaccine business. He is the next CEO of Japanese pharmaceutical manufacturer Takeda Pharmaceutical Company. He will succeed President Yasuchika Hasegawa. Weber will join Takeda in April as chief operating officer and become president in June 2014. Hasegawa will continue as interim CEO for one year and Weber is expected to succeed Hasegawa, 67, at that point. Hasegawa has run the company for 10 years. During this period Takeda has expanded internationally. Takeda acquired Swiss drug company Nycomed in 2011. Executives were hired from western companies. Francois-Xavier Roger, of Luxembourg's Millicom International Cellular SA was made the chief financial officer, and Phillip Duncan of Novartis joined as chief procurement officer. Hasegawa sees new talent from western companies as useful in penetrating emerging markets. Weber also headed Glaxo's Asia/Pacific operations. Hasegawa told a news confernece: "We're no longer in an age where decisions are based on whether a person is Japanese or foreign." ...

Matthew Tsien, a vice president in GM China, will be the new president in Jan. 1, succeeded Bob Socia. Tsien will report directly to Dan Akerson, CEO of GM. Tsien is currently vice president of planning and program management and has experience working wih GM's joint ventures. The direct report helps to provide direct contact at the highest level with CEO Akerson. GM China chairman is Tim Lee, who is also executive vice president of global manufacturing. China provides about 30% of GM's global vehicle sales. GM is taking a new look at its China operations as increasing competition is eroding its market share. VW sales in China increased by 18% to 2.35 million cars and SUV's, in comparison GM sales were up 11% to 2.31 million, for the first 9 months of 2013. GM's plans going forward are to invest $11 billion in China through 2016 for 4 new assembly plants. This will boost annual production to 5 million vehicles in China by 2016.

Spain's central bank says the Cajas savings banks have 217 billion euros in exposure to real estate and construction companies. Of this 100 billon euros is "potentially problematic." The Cajas have provisions for 38% of this. The government approved rules for minimum capital requirements. The capital ratios are set at 8% for all banks and higher for the Cajas. It said all banks will need to raise 20 billion euros by a September deadline. Barclays estimates this at 46 billion euros, twice the government estimate. The government will extend the deadline on a case by case basis, so that banks have until December 2011 to close sales of stakes to private investors.The government will then take stakes in the banks by September through the Fund for Orderly Bank Restructuring or FROB. After a 3 billon euro bond issuance in January 2011, the FROB has 4.5 billion euros on hand and a 3 billion euro credit line.

The climate change bill that passed the House 219 to 212. When the program begins in 2012 the estimated prie of apermit to emit aton of carbon dioxide will be about $13. This is projected to rise steadily as emission limits come down, but there is aprovision to prevent a surge in costs. In the early years of the program amajority of permits will be given out free to keep costs down. The Congressional Budget Office estimate is that an average American household will pay $175 ayear more in energy costs by 2020 as aresult of this bill, while the poorst households will recveive a rebate to lower their energy costs by $40. WHile the bill has been watered down form its original, the fact remains that this is the first climate change bill America has passed in decades. It is welcomed by Chancellor Merkel and the Germans who want to see the USA as akey negotiator in future talk on global warming.

Former Senator Chuck Hagel of Nebraska, has called for fresh thinking in U.S. foreign policy and foreign engagements after the wars in Iran and Afghanistan cost the U.S. about one trillion dollars. He says the U.S. should avoid single issue engagement, get the participation of other countries, and increase common ground on a host of issues which concern most of the major nations in the world. This is why we have a G-20 and not a G-8, says Hagel. This policy also helps the U.S. by having other countries in Europe, Asia and the Middle East take up some of the responsibilities that would otherwise fall disproportionately on the U.S., and lets the U.S. devote attention to strengthening the domestic economy which underpins strength in world affairs. On Iran he sees continuing talks as the better approach to coming up with a solution, for which he has come under criticism from some Republicans.

Merced describes the events leading to the acqusition of NYSE Euronext by ICE. On Dec. 20, 2012, Intercontinental Exchange said it would acquire NYSE for $8.2 billion. Mr Sprecher of ICE approached Duncan Niederauer of NYSE Euronext in September 2012, and the deal was put together in 3 months. Niederauer has a good relationship with Sprecher and both sides kept the door open after the bid by ICE and Nasdaq to acquire NYSE Euronext failed. Niederauer had persuaded the Board much earlier about the advantages of merging with ICE- providing a clearinghouse for its futures exchange operation LIFFE in London, no overlapping business that would cause problems with regulators, and the prospects of a well managed ICE under Sprecher in a growing and profitable derivatives business. The details were worked out quickly with Sprecher maintaining two headquarters, one in Atlanta and the other in New York City. ICE would gve LIFFE clearinghouse services by June 2013. Niederauer will be president and report to Mr. Sprecher....

Huruhiko Kuroda, the new Governor of the Bank of Japan, Japan's central bank, told parliament in confirmation hearings: "If I am confirmed as governor, I will clearly communicate to markets that I am prepared to do whatever it takes to beat deflation... The Japanese economy has suffered from deflation, for over 10, almost 15 years, which is a global anomaly of the most extreme. As prices have fallen, corporate profits and wages have shrunk, depressing consumption and investment and triggering even lower prices in a vicious cycle." Kuroda also emphasized that the weakening of the yen was a side effect not the goal itself- "There is evidence that currencies tend to fall for countries that ease monetary policy on a large scale, but the BOJ's policy is not targeting currencies... The important thing is to ensure price stability and achieve the 2 percent price stability goal, although it could affect currencies in that process."

Netflix reported a small profit for 1st quarter 2013 of $2.7 million compared to a loss the prior year quarter of $4.6 million. Netflix had 27.91 million paid streaming customers at the end of March 2013 compared to 28.1 million for the Time Warner HBO premium cable channel, according to SNL Kagan. Netflix sells $7.99 monthly subscriptions. Netflix is investing in original programming, including $100 million for the political drama series "House of Cards." It has $5.7 billion in longer term content commitments. High content acquisition costs resulted in $42 million in negative cash flow for the 1st quarter of 2013. Netflix generates revenues from a $7.99 subscriber plan. The DVD by mail business, Netflix's original business, is shrinking with a loss of 240,000 subscribers in 1st quarter 2013, and 7.98 million subscribers remaining. Netflix raised $500 million through a bond offering in Feb. 2013, with $225 million going towards refinancing existing debt and the rest for expanding its business....

His answer was the crazy amount of leveraging the banks took on to make higher profits. He points to other changes in teaching Econ 101. The role of financial institutions, the effects of leveraging, the limits of monetary policy when interest rates are already at zero, and the challenge of forecasting. He says economists can't take the blame for missing the crisis completely. In saying this he is saying that economists have only to use what is taught in the classroom, and not use their thinking skills developed through the course of experience in the real world and their intelligence, curiosity and skepticism, all part of an educated mind. It requires some of these skills to tell a bubble when you see one.

Kurczewski test drives aNano LX around the test drive track near the Tata Pimpri factory, and on city streets. He thinks the pickup is good for Indian city streets. The four speed manual transmission makes changing gears abreeze. The 0.6 liter engine is half the size of the Toyota Yaris or the Honda Fit. Acceleration is slow 30 seconds to reach 60mph, but in Indian traffic this works fine. Visibility is excellent. No exterior passenger side mirror, no radio, and luggage goes in from inside the car, all deisgned to keep costs down. THere is Airconditioning in the LX which accounts for half of Nano orders so far and goes for $3800. Three point safety belts, but no air bags. A Nano Europa with improvements to meet European safety and emission standards and air bags will be intorduced to Europe in 2011, and asimilar car also intoroduced to the USA by 2011 possibly at Chrysler-FIat dealers.

Gives abrief history of AOL and the demise of its original model as an email pioneer. Its now shifting to being acontent provider run by Armstrong, an ex-Google executive. Tells how AOL outflanked and outcompeted CompuServe and prodigy by letting users use their own names instead of astring of numbers. But AOL did not see the coming shift from email through the AOL site to email that would not require dialing in to AOL. And AOL spent $40 on advertising per customer. Hotmail anticipated the shift and it was free, it also used viral marketing. Every Hotmail email would say "Get your free e-mail at Hotmail." With the change in technology enabling email without signing into aparticular website and free access AOL went into reverse and downhill. MSN bought Hotmail for $400 million, and Google email brought the next wave of changes with email coming free with a search that helped one speedily navigate through pages on the web.
