In a speech on June 6, 2011, Fed chairman Bernanke says "monetary policy cannot be a panacea." He points out that monetary policy can only do so much, in effect reducing expectations that the Fed can by itself tackle the problems stemming from the economic crisis of 2008, the overleveraging of the U.S. consumer and the banking sector, and the problems in housing. A Labor Department report shows 13.7 million unemployed in April 2011, and 3 million job openings at the end of April 2011. A day in 1936, 75 years ago, when New York Mayor Fiorello La Guardia opened the city pool in Red Hook, Brooklyn. The pool was the seventh pool built by the parks department with money from the federal Public Works Administration. Admission was ten cents when the pool opened, with children allowed for free in the morning. Robert Moses was the parks commissioner in those years. Asking China to pay for part of the eurozone bailout is not in the interests of Europe, the U.S., or the world, says this New York Times editorial. China has said it expects the eurozone countries to stop criticizing China's currency policies in return for any help. It is not in China's interest to maintain these policies that create serious distortions inside China by tilting policies away from domestic savers with low interest rates and domestic consumption with higher prices. It maintains an export dependent model that is becoming harder to sustain as western economies face a slowdown.

New York Governor Cuomo gives unions and the state's Education Department 30 days to settle a lawsuit brought by teachers. The lawsuit delays job performance evaluations for teachers which include student test results. Cuomo said the alternative was for him to pass new legislation requiring this. He gives school districts 1 year to implement the new system using the framework setup by the state or loss of $805 million in state aid. Cuomo said: "No evaluation, no money. Period." This money comes from the Obama administrations Race to the Top education program which provides additional funding to states that make such improvements.

GM is looking for ways to be able to provide more loans to buyers. Its working with lenders and financial institutions to be able to offer more loans to increase sales. GM continues to work with the old GMAC, now called Ally Financial Inc, but it is looking for new partners to expand financing to car buyers. It has studied the options of regaining control of GMAC's auto lending business or starting its own finance company. For now it is looking at working with other lenders to reach buyers who are at the lower end of the income and credit scale.
