The Washington Post-ABC News poll of August 29- Sept 1, shows 60% of respondents disapprove of the way the Obama administration has handled the U.S. economy. Of these 60%, half "strongly disapprove." Two to one the respondents say they are worse off today financially than at the beginning of Obama's term in 2008. This is the response to the famous Reagan question for Jimmy Carter- "are you better off today?" On the issue of the size of government and services, only 38% of respondents say they want to see a larger government with more services, and 56% say they want to see a smaller government with less services.

The government sets a goal of reducing the number of automakers in China from 70 currently to a much smaller number by 2015. With slower growth in the Chinese market, 55 of these companies sell only 11% of the total cars sold, and no sales for 10 manufacturers. Foreign car companies are investing heavily and control 58% of the 18 million cars sold in China. Domestic car companies are faring poorly. Cherry sales dropped by 30% in November 2011 acccording to the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers. Changan, Guangzhou Automobile Group and BYD have seen sales declines of 10% in 2011 for domestic sales.

Nouriel Roubini on the housing losses expected in 2011. Roubini says he is particularly concerned because of a recent study by Laurie Goodman of Amherst Securities, which shows 11 million borrowers are in danger of losing their homes, which is one of every five borrowers. He says this number is scary because previous estimates had shown the number to be 3-4 million for the next four years. Roubini says he has talked to experts in the housing industry who tell him the 11 million number is realistic. His overall sense is that the housing problems in the U.S. are "underappreciated," with banks facing about $1 trillion in housing related losses.

By a vote of 3-2, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission voted to pass the "proxy access rule." This makes it mandatory for companies to include the names of all board nominees, even if they are not backed by the company, directly on the standard corporate ballots. These ballots are distributed before company meetings. At this time shareholders have to mail separate ballots for their nominees, and have to have a campaign to get shareholder support. This made boards less responsive to shareholders without the means to take on a long costly campaign. The new rule goes into effect with the 2011 annual shareholder meetings.

G-20 leaders in Seoul endorsed the Basel III regulations, which raise the amount of risk free capital banks have to hold to 7% of assets from as low as 2% now. The rules are to be phased in between 2013-2018, a long period, by which time there could be another crisis.The rules for banks that are "too big to fail" will be written more stringently by the Financial Stability Board. The FSB will need another year to write these rules. Mario Draghi of the Bank of Italy, heads the FSB. He is asking for more resources for the FSB to do its work.

Sony and Panasonic will jointly develop mass production methods for organic light emitting diode display, or OLED, by 2013. The two companies are also cosidering an alliance to mass manufacture OLED television sets under their brand names. One option is to work with a low cost Asian manufacturers such as AU Optronics of Taiwan. Samsung and LG Electronics are planning to introduce 55 inch OLED television sets in 2012, with the sets costing about $9000. The challenge for the manufacturers is to bring down the cost of manufacturing. Sony is a leader in this technology, having developed the first 11 inch OLED set in 2007.

U.S. companies with international operations or exports are seeing lower profits in 2015 with the surge in the value of the dollar, as it approaches parity with the euro currency in a short period of time. At the same time the dollar has surged to 120 yen to the dollar. The currency shifts are part of a new global dynamic in which the eurozone and Japan increase competitiveness and exports to boost their economies, fend off deflation, and help return the global economy to a sustained growth phase. Aggressive bond buying and QE by the ECB is part of this new dynamic in the global economy.

German chancellor Merkel says after a meeting with U.S. Secretary of State Kerry, after disagreements over NSA spying activities- "Mutual interest will be the motor for finding common solutions step-by-step. We talk about such questions of NSA openly even when there are differences." In the first address to parliament as head of the new CDU-SPD coalition, Merkel said mass collection of phone data by NSA only led to mutual mistrust and in fact diminished rather than increased security. Michael Gordon of the NYT points out that the nuclear deal with Iran reached in Geneva on Nov. 23, 2013, is largely a holding action and a way to put some constraints on the nuclear program till Iran and the U.S. can work out some major differences. The Obama administration looks to be willing to concede Iran's rights to enrich uranium- it is the strict limits that are needed that are the points of negotiation. The agreement is given in the 4 page document- the Joint Plan of Action which leaves most of the core sanctions in place and lets Iran keep most of its nuclear infrastructure.

Marcellus Shale natural gas prices are monthly average of $2.80 per million BTU compared to benchmark U.S. prices for natural gas of $3.61 in Nov. 2013. The low prices of natural gas are leading to closing of more coal powered plants in the Pennsylvania, and W. Virgina, where a glut of natural gas is developing with few pipelines in the region. For the U.S. coal lost market share down to 37% in 2012 from about 50% of the electricity generated in the U.S. Over 100 coal burning generators were closed in the U.S. since 2011 because of lower natural gas prices and the federal government's stricter pollution limits for power plants.

Ford gets $5.9 billion from the Advanced Technology Vehicles Manufacturing Loan Program of the U.S. government. It will use hte money to rettol 11 factories in the midwest. It will help Ford make 13 of its models more fuel efficient. Ford plans to sell 4 models of electric vehicles by 2012. Lawmkers in Congress are pushing to increase the size of the program from $25 billion to $50 billion. The $5.9 billion will be loaned to Ford and given between now and 2011, with Ford beginning repayment in 2012. THe plants are in Illinois, Kentucky, Michigan, Missouri and Ohio, and employ about 35,000 engineering and factory level employees.

Social unrest in France from student unions and worker unions of the SUD and CGT. The effects of the higher joblessness with unemployment moving upward from 7.9% and expected to hit 10% in 2010, is showing up in strikes and worker action in the streets as well as student union protests. Because of the way hiring practices have evolved, a 2 tier labor market has developed with overly protected permanent jobs and flexible short term contract labor. Its the jobs in flexible short term contracts that are the first to go, and as they are concentrated among the young, the joblessness among young people in France is much higher.

The decline in the value of sterling, easing of monetary polcy, and fiscal policy stimulus measures, all are helping to stabilize the British economy. Because of its smaller manufacturing base Britain will see asmaller drop in GDP of about 4% compared to Japan and Germany where the drop will be in the range of 5-6%. Britain's strength in pharmaceuticals and aircraft industries which are relatively stable makes the impact less severe. But with government increasing its borrowing, 175 billion pounds or $254 billion in 2009 alone, public sector net debt is expected to go up from 40% of GDP to 80% of GDP by 2013-2014.

Close touch and eye to eye retailing across as many cities as possible through a large as possible retailing network is the way the Chinese and Indian market is described. But HP which lags Lenovo in China is the leading computer seller in India so there may be other things and factors at work. Ford Motor Company will be a much smaller company and this looks like a structural change not a cyclical one as more automobiles are made in the developing world and fewer automobiles and smaller automobiles are made in the mature US market and like Germany and Japan the market here may have peaked. This would be seen in the employee numbers also. Ford had 34500, salaried workers in 2005, now its down to 23,700, with another cut in salaried workforce cuts by 15% by August 1, 2008, recently announced and even more cuts in 2009 if the market numbers fall further, the salaried workforce may be below 20,000.

As president Jinping begins a second five year term his focus is on the small communities like Chashan, only a 6 hour drive from Beijing, that were neglected in the rush to industrialization. He has vowed to get rid of poverty in China by 2020. About 43 million people live in rural communities that have mostly older people and live on 95 cents a day. There is another challenge say experts which is the much larger popuation that lives in rural and urban areas- including urban migrants without property and residence rights- who live on less than $5.50 per day, $165 a month, according to the World Bank. This is about 1070 yuan per month, or in Indian rupees for a comparison with India- which was at a similar stage of development in 1990- of Rs 10,000 per month. About 40% of China's population or 560 million people are in this group. With a rapidly aging society as a result of the earlier one child policy, China faces the risk of not advancing from the level of a middle income country, in the way that South Korea and Japan have moved to levels similar to Western Europe and the U.S. As China's growth level slows and with an aging society this remains a major challenge. As this report shows there is great pressure on local officials to eliminate the poverty level of people living below $30 or about 200 yuan a month, as targets are set at local levels and corruption weakens the effort. There is concern at the lack of an effort to improve the living conditions of the 200 million rural migrants living in cities, who under China's "hukou" system are not considered residents and are not getting education and health benefits. ...

For a few weeks the British parliament had remote electronic voting. It worked well. Now traditionalists in the Conservative Party including Mr. Jacob Rees Mogg have restored the voting in person. This led to a queue half a mile long that stretched all the way outside parliament and in Westminster Hall. With social distancing the members were snaking all the way into the outer buildings of parliament. Russia's economic growth is estimated by the Finance Ministry at 2.1% for 2017, the first year of growth after the recession of 2014. Putin is up for re-election in March 2018, after the elections in 2012 were marred by protests. Consumer demand is up and the main reason for sustained growth that is expected. This is a favorable environment for the election. Though incomes are hit, Putin remains a favored candidate by two thirds of voters, according to polling by Levada Center. Federal prosecutors are working on a criminal investigation of China's Huawei Technologies Co. for allegedly stealing trade secrets from U.S. business partners. Huawei is the world's second largest maker of smartphones and the largest maker of telecom equipment in the world. One investigation looks at technology used by T-mobile to test smartphones.
