This Journal editorial calls the point in the Obama speech calling for Israel to return to 1967 borders a serious misstep. At its shortest point the Journal points out, the distance from the West Bank to the Mediterranean coast is 9 miles. This makes such a major geographic factor critical to shaping a peace with the defensible borders Israel needs. This may actually make the peace harder to reach by putting Obama behind a Palestinian position that Israel will not accept, as prime minister Netanyahu pointed out on May 19, 2011.

Total USA sales fell 35% from a year earlier in the last quarter of 2008. At Chrysler the fall was steeper, at 46%, according to Autodata Corporation. On average vehicles sold in December had been on the dealer lots 92 days before being sold, up from 59 days in 2007, according to J.D. Power & Associates. Chrysler vehicles were on the dealer lots for 142 days before being sold, the most for any automaker, up from 70 days in 2007. And AutoNation Inc, estimates that 3.2 million vehicles sit on dealer lots around the country. At the current pace of sales this would last 4 months. AutoNation's CEO Mike Jackson said that he is cutting vehicle orders by half.

Afghan warlord of a previous era Hekmatyar is proving difficult to buyout or win over, a strategy pursued with Iraqi insurgents. Younger Taliban insurgents are even harder to convert or buyout. THis raises questions about the chances of this kind of effort succeeding in Afghanistan, especially considering the "allergy" to foreign presence or foreign boots on the ground among Afghan people and the part religious fervour plays. Religious fervour was much less of a factor with Iraqi Sunni insurgents. Add to this the terrain differences, between desert and high mountains, makin the kind of house to house searches and securing of areas extremely difficult.

Jet Blue came to Boston in 2004. At the time it had one gate and 30 employees at Boston's Logan International Airport. The airline now has 2300 workers and 17 gates in Jan 2012. It now has 104 nonstop daily flights to 44 locations in the U.S. and Caribbean, with plans to reach 150 flights by 2015. As American and Delta pulled back to focus on their main hubs, Jet Blue expanded quickly. It started as an airline for vacation travellers, but soon attracted business passengers for the cheaper cost of flights, especially for cost conscious travellers after the recession hit in 2008. Jet Blue also offered better service and more leg room for business passengers. Jet Blue's CEO, Dave Barger, says 30% of traffic into and out of Logan now is for business travel.

43.6 million Americans are on food stamps More than 14% of the US population used food stamps in November 2010, according to the US Department of Agriculture. This is up 14% from a year earlier. The year over year rise in the use of food stamps shows 5,411,000 more people on food stamps. In the midwest industrial states Michigan has 19.4% of the population on food stamps, Wisconsin 13.6%, Ohio 15.4%, Illinois 13.5% In the larger states California has 9.5%, Florida 15.9%, New York 15.1%, Texas 15.6%. The year over year rise in the number of people on food stamps is largest in Texas 697,000, and in Florida with 563,000.

The 2012 Camry, is very much like the 2011 Camry, other than the Entune multimedia system in the dashboard. The big difference is in the price. Toyota has dropped the price on the 2012 Camry- the 4 cylider XLE starts at 25,535, about $2000 lower than the 2011 price, the LE Hybrid with 41 mpg fuel economy, starts at $26,750, and the V6 XLE is about $30,000. It offers quieter ride and dependable quality, but it lacks the new technological advances such as turbocharged motors, direct fuel injection, stop-start systems, and lithium battteries on new hybrids, features on the new Ford Fusion models. Ford, GM, Hyundai and VW are all competing with newly designed models. With the fierce competition it is difficult not to see Toyota struggling with the same problems Ford faced when it failed to innovate with the old Ford Taurus model two decades earlier.

Charlie Rose talks to Nouriel Roubini about his thoughts on the next bubble and his book- "Crisis Economics." He says financial crises don't just happen out of the blue, they don't happen at random, instead they are predictable. Excessive risk taking and leverage have undesirable outcomes which are predictable as they take shape and get overblown. What happened to all the toxic assets? Banks are still carrying these assets hoping and praying that they don't need to be written down. His view coincides with that of Jeremy Grantham and other experts who see a growing danger in a prolonged period of zero interest rates which encourage risk taking. In all the developed economies of the U.S., Europe and Japan, borrowing can be done at zero interest rates. Investment banks are back to huge profits in proprietary trading using money borrowed at zero interest rates. A new bubble is developing that could burst in 2 or 3 years. The value of most risky assets has gone up by 50-80% in the last year. See Shiller's expert view on the danger from declining confidence levels and from higher uncertainty. Roubini says the Dodd bill is not enough. It does little to addresss the "too big to fail" problem as banks actually became larger after the financial crisis of 2008, and are too big and complex to manage. He also points to the risks of not separating proprietary trading from bank holding activities, and the need for something similiar to Glass-Steagall to separate the two.
