Republican Speaker Johnson is setting Saturday April 20, 2024 votes in the US Congress for Ukraine-Israel aid in a weekend vote, as Israel and Ukraine face growing threats. Basically the bill Democrats passed in the Senate gets split up into 3 parts for that $95 billion in aid bill to be voted on individually for each part separately for Ukraine, for Israel, for Taiwan. A fourth bill would be for Ukraine aid as a loan, and a measure leading to national ban on TikTok.

Merkel receives applause for the burqa ban, and her denunciation of populist hate sentiment, of Islamism and parallel societies, parallel cultures. The WSJ provides an excellent summary of the positions of the candidates in the U.S. presidential election of 2016 on key issues, education, healthcare, immigration, taxes, national debt, infrastructure spending, and economic growth. Clinton is clear on specifics, Trump has not made clear the details of policies and talks in general terms. On immigration the 2 candidates are far apart, on issues of infrastructure Clinton plans a $275 billion effort to repair the country's infrastructure and Trump says he would make a big effort. On taxes Clinton plans to pay for spending with higher taxes on the rich. Trump says he would provide huge tax cuts, yet make large infrastructure spending without clarifying how this would be done with sharply lower taxes. Both candidates oppose the TPP and oppose trade agreements that lead to loss of U.S. jobs.

Yellow vest protesters in Paris have a point about the rising cost of living in Paris. Paris now ranks as one of the top 3 most expensive cities inthe world after Hong Kong and Singapore.  This is using 150 items in 133 cities worldwide in the Economist Intelligence Unit's 2019 Worldwide Cost of Living Survey. Other cities that are in top ten include Zurich and Geneva ranked fourth and fifth followed by Seoul, Tokyo. Israel's Tel Aviv entered top ten for first time. New York and Los Angeles rank eight and tenth.

London property prices fell for second year in a row in 2018. No German cities in top ten, Munich overtook Hamburg and Frankfurt moved up three places. In Canada Vancouver is dropping and Toronto is still holding up.

President Biden is moving forward a plan to setup a maritime corridor from Cyprus to Gaza and a pier where commercial ships can drop off humnitarian aid and food. The trip would take 28 hours from Cyprus and would be able to get in 200 trucks of aid supplies each day. The Qataris and UAE will also help with this plan and Israelis will cooperate. On the diplomatic front both the European nations, Britain and the US are working together to get Israeli cooperation. British Foreign Secretary Cameron met Benny Gantz. Earlier Gantz met with Kamala Harris in Washington D.C. Gantz is part of the wartime cabinet in Israel. The US and EU, Britain all now have serious differences with Mr. Netanyahu on putting the humanitarian situation first and foremost considering the situation in Gaza.

Araku coffee gives employment to 150,000 tribal people in Andhra Pradesh. It is becoming known in Europe. Modi extols the images of hundreds of thousands of people doing yoga near the Nile river and on the Red Sea coastline in Egypt, and Yoga day sessions in Kashmir and in Saudi Arabia. International Yoga Day was an opportunity to do yoga in Srinagar, Kashmir.

For the last decade restrictions on sale or purchase of apartments in new buildings were being put in place by the Chinese government to make sure that buildings were for living not for speculation. With the current downturn in construction after collapse of Evergrande and other construction companies, and China depending on construction for one third of economic growth, this policy has changed. Previously couples who divorced just to buy a second apartment were not allowed to buy one for three years. People had to move to Chengdu and pay local taxes for three yeas before they could buy an apartment in the city. These restrictions are now lifted to promote new construction that had fallen quickly after some big bankruptcies and homeowner protests over incomplete buildings in 2022-2023.

The huge task of getting across policies to voters in the US who have been left out either through the presence of social media distracting attention or the busy lives of voters keeping them less informed as they struggle to get by. The message on the White House Biden and Harris site does not get through to these voters. The television and newspapers have only now gone into the policies Harris has announced at Wake Tech community college in Raleigh, North Carolina. This reaches a Democrat audience but what about it reaching the voters who are unaware in rural areas, of North Carolina and the rest of the 51states, in other areas and parts of the country where it is still fuzzy fuzzy with misinformation or counter advertising muddying up the clear picture of Harris policies.

Queen Elizabeth was more comfortable with Labour prime ministers than Conservatives. This included Harold Wilson of Labour. The Queen had a prickly relationship with Margaret Thatcher. King Charles  has strong views on social issues such as housing and migration, and on climate change. Charles 75 years and Keir Starmer 61 years are shown here to have similar views on social issues in Britain. If Starmer wins the election they will meet weekly, and have much in common. The royal historian says there is a meeting of minds in terms of the social issues at stake, the plight of the people of Britain. The national anthem was played at the beginning of the Labour Conference in 2022. Sir Keir Starmer was made Queen's Counsel in 2004 and was knighted in 2014 for his services in public prosecutions.

The Chair of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus and Deputy Chair, Nanette Baragan, Adriano Espaillat ,say "we stand with president Joe Biden and vice president Kamala Harris." There are 43 members in that group. Biden also had a good conversation Monday night with 60 members of the CBC Congressional Black Caucus. The CBC offered full support to Biden and Harris and the CBC called for efforts to invest in housing and invest in the Black Community. Every member of CBC praised Biden. Senator Patty Murray, president pro tempore of the Senate, asked Biden to be more forceful and energetic- "There is such a case to be prosecuted against Trump, president Biden has to lead the charge making that case." She also praised Biden for leading a "historic" first term.

If the wording in the Pew Research Survey were to include that only the government can tackle huge problems in climate change, infrastructure, and manufacturing, the over 50% of Americans that support government taking on these responsibilities might just as well be closer to 60-70 percent. The tide is turning as the whole culture since Reagan and the key adopters of Reagan's theory  successive Democratic administrations of Clinton and Obama is being reversed- Democrats and Independents supporting the change to get government to tackle these problems is up 15 percentage points. Another shift is the young people who are filled with frustration by the lack of government taking on a bigger role to solve problems such as climate change, manufacturing jobs in US, infrastructure rebuilding that only the government can do.

The Fed's Jerome Powell makes a half percentage point rate cut that takes the federal funds rate to between 4.75% and 5.00%.  11 of 12 Fed governors supported the decision for a half percentage point rate cut.

Powell said:

"We are committed to maintaining our economy’s strength. This decision reflects our growing confidence that with an appropriate recalibration of our policy stance, strength in the labor market can be maintained.”

This is the US central bank's, the Fed's response to high cost of living concerns in the US. It provides relief to households with credit card balances, and business with variable rate debt. Rates for corporate debt and mortgages had started declining in anticipation of rate cuts.

If not much is done it will put the US behind in maritime shipping by a generation. The US and India are both starting from a low point but accelerating their effort. India's effort to connect the Arabian Sea with the Mediterranean is India's plan with Italy and other countries. The US is recalibrating the US ports by bringing them back under the US such as the Panama Canal ports, and imposing costs on competitors so that it can compete on a level playing field. Mike Waltz in the DJT administration was pushing maritime infrastructure  development during his time in the US Congress.

The U.S. Dodd-Frank legislation has a provision requiring U.S.- listed oil, gas and mining companies to disclose payments to governments for access to mining and oil resources. The S.E.C. will decide how to implement this rule which goes into effect in 2012. This has a severe effect on the economies of developing countries as it siphons away significant part of revenues for the resources into the hands of government officials. From Nigeria to Equatorial Guinea in Africa, and in other parts of the world in Latin America and Asia, this is a serious problem and results in underdevelopment and retarded societies.

Meyerson points to Germany's success in manufacturing with labor costs that are higher than in the USA. Hourly manufacturing compensation in Germany (wages plus benefits) was $48 in Germany in 2008, and $32 in the USA, according to the most recent year surveyed by the US Bureau of Labor Statistics. Meyerson says American companies are sitting on $1.9 trillion in cash at a time when companies are creating jobs at a crawling pace. Only 50,000 net jobs were created in November 2010. He suggests a new economic advisor for the Obama administration, someone who brings experience and also believes in the US role in manufacturing- Andy Grove, former CEO of Intel Corporation. A big change for the presidential election in 2012 is the lopsided way in which white voters who are struggling with job losses or seeing economic difficulties are alienated from President Obama. By 58% to 32% these voters favor Romney over Obama in a May 2012 Wahington Post-ABC News poll, a 26% margin. Of those struggling financially about 7 in 10 lack a college degree. This is happening even though 31% of these voters in this poll say they are Republicans and 27% Democrats. It is true that Obama could still win in 2008 losing this group 58% to 40%, an 18% losing margin, similiar to Kerry in 2004, and Al Gore in 2000. A wider margin of 26% poses more risks if the unemployment situation and the economy looks weaker by November 2012.

The situation for organic farmers in the U.S. and Canada where conversion is discouraged by the high costs incurred over 2-3 years for converting to regular farming. A period in which use of pesticides and other chemical products is reduced and new farming practices are introduced. During this period farmers still sell product at the regular price, even as high upfront costs are incurred. The result is tight organic supplies for corn, soyabeans and other food products, with organic prices as much as three times the regular price. In responding to the surging demand buyers are getting involved to support farmers by guaranteeing prices over several years, and in some cases buying farms. This trend should result in lower prices for organic foods as supplies catchup with demand.

Germany's approach supported by public opinion of diplomacy and dialogue with Russia during the Ukrainian crisis in 2014. Germany has strong economic relations with Russia. German companies have $22 billion in direct investment in Russia in 2013. Over one third of natural gas and crude oil imports into Germany are from Russia. Phasing out nuclear power is likely to increase the supplies. Sanctions on Russia are seen in the CDU as hurting German jobs. German economic relations are on a different basis with Russia than U.S. economic relations with Russia, requiring a different approach. About 40% of German public opinion has an unfavorable view of the U.S. according to a recent Pew Research Global Survey. The result is a nuanced and a flexible dialogue based approach to Russia.

Mervyn King of the Bank of England and Ben Bernanke both were academics at MIT, and both share the approach they are taking for quantitative easing or credit easing. They are buying up assets like government bonds in the case of Bank of England to reduce the yields, and commerical paper, mortgage backed securities, and consumer debt in the case of the Fed, also to reduce yields and drive up prices. The idea is to act more decisively than the Bank of Japan did during Japan's banking crisis, and flood the system with cash so that there is real impact. There is less danger of inflation in this downturn, which is one of the calculations that the Fed and the Bank of England are both making as they do this.

Joel Peterson describes how he got his start at Trammel Crow, a real estate developer company, seeing an ad on the bulletinn board at school for somebody fluent in French to go and work in the south of France. He says a big part of his relationships with lenders and partners in the business was about trust. He describes trust as coming from listening from the heart, genuinely interested in what people have to say, not some listening techinque. Its also about you as a person, authenticity, openness, being able to see things as they really are, and being direct. The lessons from the British auto industry which ran through $16.5 billion in rescue money in the 70's and 80's before collapsing as German and Japanese automakers took over its markets. One of the problems was the failure of labor relations, the other was shoddy quality just when the Germans and Japanese were improving theirs aggressively. The labor relations are a problem at the Detroit automakers and quality has also been an issue with Detroit playing catchup again and again for three decades. Management's lack of vision and leadership in fuel efficiency may have struck a fatal blow, and the concentration on overseas markets at GM without foresight and vision for the American market may now be called a failed strategy. British auto experts say that Leyland controlled 36% of the British market even in the 70's before gradually going out of business and its start was even before General Motors.
