This is what our energy wars, our climate change wars are about in summary. Europe has moved faster than the US, India and China in cutting fossil fuels use over 20 years 2005 to 2025. Europe going from 1525 trillion watt hours to 792- cutting use by half. The US from 2900 to  2553 trillion watt hours just 12%. And China...China tripled its use. This has come at a price as the costs of renewables push up electricity prices beyond what homes and industry can support. UK electricity prices 80% higher than US and half of UK energy users plan to ration its use 2025. Half of electricity costs in UK come from cost and delivery, other half of costs from subsidies of renewables and other. In Germany high electricity costs are hobbling industry and reducing economic growth. Lower electricity prices make the US more attractive than Germany as a place to invest. Another way to look at it- US and Europe cut fossil fuel use by about 1100 trillion watt hours and China increased its use by 4200 trillion watt hours or 4 times what the US and Europe cut in 2024 over 2005. Adding India, Brazil this would be 5-6 times what the US and Europe saved in 2024 over 2005. The "And "strategy of combining reduction in fossil with building renewable capacity is working out compared to dumping fossil in one shove and going all out renewable. There is also the question of equity. China and India argue equity means we should be allowed to use some fossil with renewable for 2.5 billion people's needs. The other side of equity is the US saying the same as "no fossil period" strategy puts the needs of the large part of the population for lower costs of energy  pushed aside as wealthy classes say it is OK. Even when the savings through cuts and sacrifices in US and EU are cut down, cut down by 5-6 fold increase in China, India, Brazil alone. In this kind of climate change war it makes sense not to go with labels such as climate change denial DJT vs China climate change affirming, when China is diluting US-EU climate change entire twenty year savings of 2005-2024 by a factor of 4, 1100 trillion watt hours wiped out by China's 4200 trillion watt hours added. And India, Brazil taking this to a factor of 6. This is why a lot of the discussion with self-righteous indignation becomes less purposeful. What is clear is that every action to cut cost of living in US and EU for large parts of the people is an effort in the right direction as it frees up resources for the fight against climate change, the sense that we are all in the same boat and in the same struggle. About the reorganization of IBM under Sr. Vice President Robert Moffat Jr. that is underway. The idea is to make IBM more efficient by increasing the productivity of its people and reduce costs. There are over 200,000 people in the IBM services business. Operating margins increased by 2.3% to 10.3% with productivity improvements in the 1st quarter of 2006. IBM's revenues declined by 1.2% in the 1st quarter to $11.6 billion. This IBM Tech services restructuring will be watched closely by Indian IT and IBM's competitors. Moffat hopes to attack the IT tech services business with a new format to improve productivity and reduce costs, and bring IBM' strengths such as research capabilities to bear. The format is being a virtual factory with competency centres of excellence across the globe. The question is can Moffatt pull this off and convince a bureaucratic large organization to overcome inertia and do things differently. Especially as Indian IT is smaller and not yet affected by Big Company Syndrome. What Moffatt is attempting to do is to create a virtual global factory with specialized centres of compency in different global locations so that work can be transferred from one location to another- much as we see in the automobile industry- based on who does best what at what cost. Nilekani of Infosys, says American competiitors are "seeing it as a compelling threat after years of putting their head in the sand." They are responding to megatrends but not fast enough, according to Business Week. This may be attributable to the fact that Indian IT is younger, smaller, faces more competition inside India, and is more agile for these reasons compared to an IBM or an EDS. Hamm points out that IBM is shifting to a new posture as a globalized business, one that puts behind it its days as a multinational company or MNC, no more MNC geographically based independent country businesses, not an outsourcer as frequently assumed when IBM shifted some jobs overseas recently. The new IBM is an organization that builds on competency centers across the globe with concentration of skills and talent in different locations worldwide. It uses the competency centres to pull together the best people and sequence of operations to meet customer needs. ...

The Supreme Court's ruling against Wyeth knocks down a 2006 Bush administration regulation which declared that permitting product-liability law suits conflicted with "FDA's role "as the expert federal agency responsible for evaluating and regulating drugs." Justice Paul Stevens writing the majority opinion said the Bush position is "entitled to no weight, and was "inherently suspect because no evidence was given in support of its position and the states and the public did not get an opportunity to comment before it was issued. Wyeth had argued that it met FDA guidelines in the label for its antinausea drug Phenergan, and wasn't liable when a 63 year old guitar player lost her arm after receiving the drug.

The repeated denials by VW officials from global headquarters in Wolfsburg, Germany, and from VW in the U.S., since 2012- when the problem of higher emissions on roads compared to emission test readings first came to public attention- show that VW management took the problem lightly. The deep consequences of such a move to hide real emissions, not just from the EPA but from unwary buyers, appears to have been entirely missed by management. Even when the issue was raised by the EPA, VW stated to EPA that the differences in results on roads vs actual emissions tests were technical flaws. In December 2014 VW even made a voluntary recall of half million diesel vehicles. Yet the high emissions on roads continued till VW officials told EPA about the software that was the real cause in August 2015. Even then VW officials offered to personally apologize, and asked for certification of 2016 models in the U.S., missing entirely the deep consequences of their actions. VW now says that the software to conceal the real emissions was installed on 11 million vehicles worldwide. VW management has set aside $7.7 billion as provision for penalties. The VW stock declined by 35% by September 22, 2015....

Is there a lesson in this for the Detroit automakers who have too many dealerships. See related article on the dealership numbers for the Big Three vs. the like of Toyota and Honda. Deere has gone from 3400 dealerships to 2984 dealerships, down 12% in ten years since 1996, so it appears to be a gradual decline, and dealerships are consolidating with stronger partners, or selling out to stronger partners. The number of owners has shrunk at a much faster pace. (Why are auto dealerships able to take this to the courts and not Deere dealerships, as is mentioned in the related auto dealership article? ) Much of this reflects search for improved profitability and stability in a very cyclical industry. Fewer distribution outlets owners and better management of inventory, better parts service with better techically trained staff, and bringing new technology and designs to improve the revenue generating capacity of each machine by reducing demand for expensive labor, is a shrewd way of managing this business. A $100 million dealer organization can better service what is becoming a high tech product, a better hire technically trained people, and better manage inventory. With this setup Deere probably can better manage production to match demand and not let inventory clutter the dealer lots for discounted clearence. ...

How GM 3 crossover vehcles built at the same plant in lansing, Michigan running at full capacity, are taking sales away from the Toyota and Honda brands. About 20% of all Acadia and Outlooks go to customers trading in Asian cars, about 14% of all Enclaves go to customers trading in Asian cars. In general only 3% of GM vehicle sales go to customers trading in vehicles made by Toyota and Honda. Figures from JD Powers. GM just added a third shift at Lansing and the inventory numbers also reflect hot selling crossovers- only a 22 day supply of Enclaves, 32 day supply of Acadias and a 51 day supply of Outlooks. In general GM is carrying 70 days inventory of vehicles. With smaller stocks less need for incentives so Enclaves and Acadias go at full price. Note: Why is there this juxtaposition of figures amuch higher inventory of Saturn Outlooks at 51 days compared to 22 days for Buick Enclave, and yet more people are trading in their Japanese or Asian cars for Outlooks than they are for Enclaves, 20% for Outlooks vs 14% for Enclaves? Here a Mercedes customer went for an Enclave at $45,000, $30,000 less than a comparable Mercedes. ...

This Weekend Essay in The Times by Tom McTague looks at the European Union skepticism about the US after the failure of three administrations under Bush, Obama and Trump to extricate America from wars,  concentrate on building its infrastructure and manufacturing, renewing the lives of workers and families that were neglected. That skepticism came from administrations in Europe that also failed the Europeans in much the same way with the neglect of infrastructure, manufacturing, and little done for climate change under Schroeder and Merkel, Sarkozy, Hollande and Macron. The dependence on China for manufacturing and on Russia for energy for the EU and Britain made the situation even worse than in the US.  Al this has changed with the election of president Biden in the US, and Scholz with Habeck- Baerbock in Germany and with the recent elections in France upholding workers and families, acting on climate change. A false idea is presented about the Europe vs US and dominance as each is part of the free world alongside India, Australia, Japan, South east Asia, Latin America, French and English language Africa. This is why one has the G7 and G20 with countries like Argentina, Brazil and Indonesia critical parts of the free world. It is the ignorance of many officials in the EU more than the sentiments of the people of the free world in all these countries that leads to these false ideas about which country is dominant and skepticism - none are dominant it is through the unity of all and a shared vision in international rule of law, fairness, humility, respect for poorer nations. It is this that Kipling talked about in his poem "Intercessional," the lines repeatedly calling for the Lord's grace and for man to merit that grace with "a humble and contrite heart." It is also the spirit that so recently Mohandas Gandhi grasped and put forward for India and the world. Europeans talk about dominance- think about this for a moment, Gandhi merely asked for the right to move freely for Indians and Asians including Chinese at a meeting in 1908 where he gave a speech. The speech was on May 18, 1908, at the YMCA in Johannesburg and it debated the question "Are Asiatic and colored Races a Menace to the British Empire."  Not a word of ill will was uttered by Mohandas Gandhi even when talking about segregation in the speech. It is a humble and contrite heart that the Lord listens to. Both India and South Africa found a way out in a different way with faith in a higher authority, that even the British had not failed to address as Kipling clearly shows. ...

This is a very informative interview with Joe Biden. So far Biden has given few interviews where he talks freely at length about how he plans to run his administration and what is most important to his heart. The title is very misleading in this respect. Unlike the inexperience of Obama with his "we won" we must be doing something right, Biden with his years of experience comes closer to Lyndon Johnson or Truman and the same drive to get things done. He says in this interview "there is no elation." He just wants to get somethings done as quickly as he can and he knows Congress as well as Lyndon Johnson did when he tried to get his vision of "the Great Society." It is almost as if the Biden sequel to the inexperience of Obama, is like the Johnson sequel to the inexperience of Kennedy.   To understand Biden is to know what hurts him most. Biden feels the pain that every rural county in America did not vote for him. He knows something is deeply wrong that this should happen as it has never happened before. It may be time to define diversity differently - people of diverse backgrounds not just ethnic or race but also whether with rural or urban backgrounds as they are today totally different. He also feels the pain that seventy two million Americans voted for Trump. He will judge his success or failure in winning over about half of them to bring this down from 47-48% to 25%. These issues will define and shape the Biden presidency. Can he deliver to the rural counties, health care, education, broad band connectivity, everything that has disrupted life in rural America from the way it was in the Truman and Eisenhower administrations when it comes to the social fabric. The China issue simply fits into this. European societies are feeling the pain of the fragmentation in their social fabric with starkly different opportunities for life in rural vs urban. Respect for fellow Americans comes before respect for China- or Japan, or India, or Europe. Biden understands what three decades of shift of manufacturing jobs to China and other countries have done to American communities, to small towns and the rural areas surrounding them in America. For this reason Biden does not plan to change the Agreement China made with the Trump administration for 25% tariffs on a portion of imports from China and China's written agreement to buy $200 billion of American products. For this reason his response to China's challenge emerging from trade policy set in motion by the Clinton administration, and allowed to continue by the Bush and Obama administrations with the addition of foreign wars that dissipated the country's finances urgently needed for infrastructure building and investments in education and advancing science and technology, is to reverse all the negative trends. Biden plans to make the investment in America that Mr. Trump started but to do this more effectively, he says.   ...

The WSJ's Troianovski and Benoit's interview with German foreign minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier. Steinmeier served as foreign minister eight years ago in a prior four year term. Steinmeier says he does not know whether he would have taken such an active role 8 years ago in diplomacy and talks with other countries, given the German public's reluctance to take an active role in world affairs. He and chancellor Merkel are much more active and the chancellor has been vocal about Germany's position in a way that Germans are not accustomed to. This has led to criticism inside Germany about Germany's role. A poll by TNS Infratest Policy Research in spring 2014 shows that only 37% of Germans say they want to see Germany more engaged in international crises. The same poll conducted recently showed the results were still the same, little change in how Germans see their post World War II role. Steinmeier says this is the difficulty he faces, to do what is needed as crises happen and call for a German role, presenting no real alternatives. He has on his desk at the foreign ministry a color lithograph of Social Democratic Chancellor, and Mayor of Berlin during the Cold War, Willy Brandt, with Brandt's words from 1969- "We want to be and to become a nation of good neighbors, internally and outwardly." Steinmeier expresses disappointment with the recurring crises in Ukraine, and says he can only guess Russian intentions, that Russia is looking for international respect and recognition. German business critics point to lower exports to Russia. And most Germans prefer that Germany maintain a peaceful role without foreign engagements. Sanctions that hurt the Russian economy are not seen as part of the German role, but Steinmeier who headed the chancellery during Gerhard Schroeder's term as chancellor from 1998-2005, says in the long term Germany has to support a world with rules. It should be mentioned that Willy Brandt as Mayor of Berlin 1957-1966 during the Eisenhower and Kennedy administrations was internationally engaged in a way that goes even beyond Steinmeier's engagement today....

Peter Bernstein, colleague of Robert Heilbroner, economic historian, communicator and developer of efficient market theory and portfolio theory. He wrote several books on capital, risk and Wall Street and diversified investing. He like Heilbroner was a Keynesian, who believed government spending was critical to supporting the economy, and disagreed with Reagan. He believed that the deficit was not too large relative to the nations output, and government's role in the economy should not be curtailed. Government spending was necessary to a healthy market economy in Bernstein's view. His other point was that regulation of markets was needed to prevent a market collapse. His view was that the wealth and entrepreneurial energy generated by arising stock market were worth the risk. In a semimonthly newsletter he published for many years he said a week before he passed away at 90, that "with hindsight, most readers today would find our position in 2005 to have been a prescription for tragedy." He went on to say quoting Alfrd Tennyson, " tis better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all. There was wisdom in Tennyson's words. Who can say he was wrong beyond debate? That would be asorry world indeed." Whats is interesting this that unlike many who get blinded to dangers such as selfinterested behaviour like that of the ratings agencies, the mortgage innovators who were more selfinterested than innovators, and banking executives interested in their bonuses, Bernstein, Heilbroner and others like him take positions on either side on the merits and on ethics, leaving out ideological bias. He is for financial innovation but is cautious at the same time, preferring to build theory he says. Its interesting that in 2005, he wrote the book "Wedding of the Waters: The Erie Canal and the Making of a Great Nation," a subject that another financial industry leader from that period, Felix Rohatyn, also talks about in his book "Bold Endeavours." There is a difference in the kind of selfinterested and reckless "innovation" of Mozilo, Prince and Moody's successors in the ratings agencies, and the innovation, watchfulness and entrepreneurial energy that Moody, Rohatyn and Bernstein have in mind....

As in the US with Harris investment in America vs Trump cuts there is a distinct difference between the Tory spending plans that allowed capital spending investment in the economic future of Britain to decline from 2.5% to 1.7% of GDP over 5 years to 2030. Rachel Reeves, Britain's finance minister, says the government will adopt a new rule that changes the way it measures debt- public sector net liabilities as a percentage of GDP is the new fiscal rule. What it does is free up 50 billion pounds Britain badly needs to invest in things like climate change action, education, and other needs of the economy that will brighten Britain's prospects in the future.  “If we continued on that path, we would be embracing a path of decline. The real debate now in British politics is whether you are on the side of investment or on the side of decline. I don’t want to see public sector net investment as a share of our economy decline in a way that is currently set out. Under our current fiscal rules, we would not be able to reverse that path.” The stability rule goes with this that says strictly this money will not be used for tax giveaways, and not for public sector pay deals or the day to day functioning of government. In addition th government will borrow 25 billion pounds to  keep 30 billion pounds of headroom so that debt will keep falling over the first term of this Labour government.   ...

When Amory Houghton was CEO in 1964 of Corning Glass, the company made the glass used to encase TV tubes. The company lost this market to cheaper Japanese imports. It was the shift to tiny strands of glass that replaced copper wire as away to transmit voice and data, that saved Corning.  He had to cut employees by one thirds in the beginning but soon was back to a new business. As Houghton says it was back on his own turf, with its own patents and scientific expertise.   After running the company till 1983 he considered becoming a missionary in Zimbabwe in the Episcopal Church, but decided instead to run for Congress as Amo his nickname, for the southern part of New York state. The company that made lightbulbs for Thomas Edison in the 19th century, shifted first to glass to encase TV tubes, and then in another change turned to fibre optics in the 20th and early 21st century. A change made possible when company management looked different than it is today, with humbler people and CEO's closer to the rank and file than today. ...

Chinese car company Shuanghuan's CEO was on display at the Franfurt auto show. Its rear looks like a BMW X5 and BMW has charged that it copied the X5 and filed suit to prevent it from being marketed in Germany. Shuanghuan also has a minicar that is called Noble which looks like the Daimler's Smart minicar. Daimler also is taking legal action to prevent the marketing of the Noble in Germany. Only the X5 was shown at the Frankfurt Auto show getting criticism from Reithofer who is head of BMW. Critics say that the Chinese actually have borrowed from several car designs and from different aspects such as the interior aand exterior of different brands,thus the X5 is seen as borrowing from the front of a Toyota Land Cruiser and the rear of a BMW X5. The price difference is huge 29,000 euros for the CEO vs 59,000 euros for a X5. Currently the Chinese are struggling with safety issues in their cars by makers such as Brilliance and the Landwind. Both cars did badly in tests conducted by the German automobile club ADAC. Landwind's model is being retooled for safety while the Brilliance which has a collaboration with BMW for the Chinese market presented a new subcompact the BS2 as an alternative to the VW Golf....

This editorial Board opinion piece in the WSJ gives exceptional insights into major issues facing Germany, the cost of electricity generated from renewables, failure to meet climate change emissions targets set by the government, and the difficulty of forming a new coalition government with conflicting goals of the Greens vs the CDU and the FDP.  By one estimate it cost households and business about $125 billion extra in higher electricity bills for 2000-2015 to subsidize renewable energy from solar and wind. Utilities are required to buy renewable at above market rates, especially since the energy revolution called Energiewende was launched by chancellor Merkel in 2010. German electricity prices are about 36 cents per kilowatt hour compared to 13 cents in America. The 2011 decision following the Fukushima disaster to phase out nuclear power by 2022 made the effort to meet renewables targets of 40% by 2020 compared to 1990 -exceeding the 20% for the EU- even harder. Germany sees a 30% target for 2020 as reachable.   Even though renewables can generate 50% of required energy supplies, only 30% of the supplies are utilized as the renewables are generated mostly in the north of the country and there is a lack of transmission lines to bring it to the industrial south. The dirty secret says the WSJ editorial board for the renewable story in Germany is that a lot of coal is used in dirty coal plants to meet electricity needs when wind and solar energy are not available. Cheaper coal not natural gas is preferred for such generation as daytime peak use that recoups more expensive gas cost is managed with renewables. Leading to the situation that Germany generates only 9% of energy from natural gas compared to 30% in the U.S.. The further Germany has gone in renewables has also led to the paradox of increased dependence on coal. Getting to the new Jamaica coalition being planned between the CDU and the FDP and the Greens. The problem is that the Greens want to see the 20 most polluting coal plants closed, the CDU and the FDP are willing to close only ten coal polluting plants. The WSJ's opinion is that voters chose the AfD right wing party with 13% of the vote because of the platform promise to shut down Merkel's Energiewende policy.   ...

Prime Minister Fukuda of Japan and a hot new Japanese drama TV show "Change", that centers on a 35 year old prime minister Keita Asakura. It starts with dawn rising over the Japanese prime minister's building and in one of the episodes shows people talking excitedly about Obama 46 years, and Cameron, 41 years, politicians in the USA and Britain with comparisons to older political leaders like prime Minister Fukuda of Japan. In fairness to Fukuda, 72 years old, he has improved relations with China and hosted the Chinese President in Tokyo, but he has failed to get legislation through parliament because of the opposition parties the DJP which is also unpopular. But with the TV show having 20% of viewers in the Tokyo area including the current defence minister Ishiba, 51 years old, and the youngest cabinet minister, it shows that status quo is quite unpopular in Japan and the current politicians are quite unpopular.
