As cash strapped consumers make their largest purchases following the paycheck cycle, how deep this recession is turning out to be becomes evident. Lately the drops in the Dow Jones average reflect declines in consumer goods companies like Procter and Gamble.

This turns the accepted logic in the auto industry on its head about higher margins with larger more expensive cars.

Contrst that with the vigorous approach of Hyundai to fuel efficiency. And go fast forward to 2009 when Hyundai sees August 2009 sales 47% higher than August 2008 sales, Hyundai being the only large car company to increase sales by end of 2009 in the American market.
