How internet scraping works, WSJ looks at how internet scraping is flooding Wikipedia and other useful sites with millions of bots creating performance issues and slowing down user access. A million bots can be on a site in a few hours. No regulation of the internet is a problem. Lobbyists are getting Representatives of both political parties to enact no legislation so that they can control the marketplace. When there are rivals doing the same thing there are lawsuits, some suing Amazon, some suing Microsoft, and some suing OpenAI.

The current economic expansion in the U.S. in April 2014 is at 58 months from the beginning of recovery in 2009. In this exceptional account Josh Zombrun of WSJ compares the current expansion to previous expansions since 1950, with the views of experts such as Stan Hall of the NBER committee, which studies turning points. This expansion is forecast to go for 90 months into 2016 by the U.S. Federal Reserve, and 102 months into 2017 by the CBO. Sooner or later, says Stan Hall, some adverse unpredictable event takes place that ends the expansion. So far the expansion has been slow and protracted, as predicted by economists Reinhart and Rogoff from previous financial crises in the last century, giving it room to grow as corporate earnings continue to improve. Fed chairwoman's sense of slack in the economy also provides room for employment and incomes to grow in the later stages of the expansion. This is good news for the emerging market economies such as India and China, and for the European Union, faced with slowing growth. So how does this expansion compare with earlier ones. The expansion of the 1991-2001 of the tech boom was 120 months, 1961-1969 of the Sixties 106 months, 1982-1990 of the Reagan era 92 months. The controversial one on shaky foundations is the recent housing boom 2001-2007 of 73 months ending in a huge bust with the 2008 financial crisis. The shorter expansions are the 1975-1980 Post-Vietnam one for 58 months, and the 1970-1973 spurt before the OPEC price surge. India's broadband prices have dropped to the point where they are the lowest in the world. A UK comparison site shows 1 gigabyte of mobile data  costs $0.26 in India compare to $12.37 in the U.S. and $6.66 in the UK, and globally about $8.53.  Reliance Jio the company which dropped prices starting in 2016, says it is using voice and data on a spectrum known only for data use. Reliance Jio is using only one fifth of its capacity. and says is it is making more revenue per user than competitors. Competitors including Airtel and Vodafone have lowered prices reducing margins of as high as 30 percent to being barely profitable. Reliance Jio gives away its 4G feature phone JioPhone against refundable security deposit of $21, with plans of $1 a month. The handset supports Wifi and WhatsApp. India ha 1.17 mobile subscriptions, 55% in urban areas. Most broadband use now comes from Jio. Mobile data consumption has jumped in India in 2 years to more than 10GB per user per month, which is close to that in the U.S.    ...

Xiaomi is China's leading brand. It is very different from other companies in China and America. It is tightly controlled by its founder Lei Jun who has built a loyal following for the brand  through fan clubs and creating an enthusiastic following. Because the firm is run by founder Lei Jun it can make quick decisions to enter a market. Lei Jun was a computer science student in Wuhan in 1987 as China opened up to the world.  By 2017- in three years from being zero in the Indian market place in 2014- Xiaomi had become the largest smartphone company in India. The company was launched in 2010. Profit margins are thin about 1% in a very competitive pricing market.  Metrics are based on revenue per user of $9 per user from an installed base of 190 million smartphone users, spending 54 minutes a day using Xiaomi's app, game and other services, or 20% of the phone use time. Revenue per user comes from advertising, and from commissions on the apps and games it sells to its user base. In 2015 Xiaomi had a loss, in 2016 sales dropped, in 2017 new products led to a resurgence in the market with sales increasing 68%. As Xiaomi goes into its IPO, experts say much of the $10 billion from the IPO could go into reinvestment as Xiaomi reinvents itself and moves into other internet business. ...

New affordability and choice in EV's in US under $40000 in 2025. Even without incentives from the government EV's remain an attractive option now that new gasoline cars cost an average of $49,000 and affordable EV's come at price range uder $40,000. In Germany VW has EV models for about $30,000 and this pricing and choice of models can be expected in the US in 2026. Mims looks at how EV's are now a realistic option for car buyers in 2025. Americans drive an average of 33 miles a day- the 300 mile range of new EV's means charging once a week is good enough. New EV batteries are better and can outlast a vehice's life. Savings from low maintenance costs can make up for any shortfalls for EV's.

Birthright Citizenship Case at the Supreme Court of the US.- Arguments live from Courtroom at SCOTUS. History shows that much of the 19th and 20th century was spent keeping Asians out of the US, even the Chinese who built the railroads. One of the Chinese whose parents came to the US Wong Kim asked to stay and the Supreme Court ruled in that individual and single isolated case in 1898 that he could stay. Only after JFK and LBJ was immigration gradually opened to Chinese and Indians and Asians in general. By the end of the 20th century this went to the other extreme from no Asians allowed to birthright citizenship for Asian mothers to obtain citizenship in this way just by arriving in New York, clearly with no justification. Even Britain abandoned this idea of birthright citizenship in 1981,  with parentage required uder a new law, one parent citizenship required, 10 years of residence required. Even this relevant fact was not cited by the Solicitor General of the US when he presented the case to the Court in opening summary on April 1, 2026. With Britain removing itself from this practice, it makes no sense to practice birthright citizenship as there is such thing as the Republican view of this- it is the universal view now of all civilized modern nations. With one or two exceptions for unique reasons ( a largely unpopulated country) such as Canada, which may also amend this law. The fact that Asians were not allowed for a century even after some "coolies" built the railroads in the US does not mean it is now time to go to the other extreme to welcome all who come even under the most egregious means. Asians themselves will recognize and support this, now that the "coolie" culture and colonialism is long gone and Asians are part of the fabric of this country. None of this will be mentioned at the Supreme Court just esoteric argument around what a term was accidentally inserted in the case for the one Chinese admitted under that case in 1898 - "Under the jurisdiction thereof." And lawyers will argue around technical points, one more reason for the public disbelief in the SCOTUS. Yet most Asians can be grateful for the process initiated by JFK and LBJ that opened up lawful immigration to the US for Asians, and have the curiosity and eagerness to learn the history of this new Nation and its boundless energies that reshaped our world, to learn about its European heritage and cultures, not ask for more such as birthright citizenship. ...

Facebook's acquisition of WhatsApp for $19 billion in cash and stock. Whats App has attracted users by offering the messaging service free and 99 cents for the second year for sending apps and pictures. It has grown rapidly in its international user base, and has in the space of 4 years since starting up in 2009 built a user base of 450 million users. About 70% of users go to the site daily compared to 61% for Facebook. Facebook pays $40 per user similiar to what is paid out for other social media sites. The main advantages are to protect Facebook as the trendiness of Facebook declines- if youngers cool to the site- by adding a popular messaging site, the international base of users, and the large number of users. A Ukrainian Jan Koum, who worked for 10 years at Yahoo, and Brian Acton founded WhatApp.

Yahoo data for 500 million users was stolen in a hacking attack in 2014, Yahoo disclosed to the media. Experts are troubled by the fact that a Yahoo attack by a state sponsored actor in 2014 was only disclosed 2 years later. Even Verizon which plans to buy Yahoo says it did not know about this hacking attack that compromised 500 million user records, passwords and security questions. Verizon says it came to know about it September 20th about 2 days ago, and has limited idea about its impact. Yahoo says it came to know about this in summer 2016, when stolen data appeared in underground forums for sale. Yahoo upon further investigation discovered the large state sponsored attack in 2014.

This WSJ report looks at the work of Sandberg in building up the advertising revenue part of Facebook. Ms Sandberg took many risks which were highlighted in WSJ investigations of Facebook. This showed the toxic effects on young girls mental health, on democratic processes, on an angrier discourse with algorithm changes to reverse falling user engagement. 

This period of social media growth, and tech growth at other companies such as Google and Apple, which turned into monopolistic behaviour has damaged America's social fabric. Google has the lowest share of the search market in South Korea- 2%. This has prompted Google to follow the leading search portals in South Korea. Whats different in South Korea is that people say they go to a home page to see the news, and topics that are popular with fellow users. NHN and Daum the leading portals present users with home pages that look more like those of media outlets than asearch engine. They give latest news, photos, videos and updated lists of highly trafficked blogs and popular online chat sites. First they look at this information, then they start a search. NHN Naver has 66% of search queries, Daum 21% and SK Telecom's Nate 6%. Yahoo Korea 3%, Google 2%. Daum and Naver have created vast databases of popular content and link to them first. A search for lung cancer will show information from articles acquired or commissioned from Korean doctors and hospitals. Its adiffernt approach and it works in South Korea. To adapt to this user preference Google will now showblocks of links under the main search box about topics and news that are popular in for South Korean users....

Increased funding for the Food and Drug Administration by the Obama administration. An additional $300 million as ben allocated. The budget request is for $2.35 billion for fiscal 2010, compared to $2.06 billion in the previous 2009 fiscal yar. Including user fees the budget request totals $3.04 billion for the 2010 fiscal year compared with $2.7 billion in the 2009 fiscal year. THe Obama administration proposes increased manufacturer user fees to pay for food-plant inspections and to speed the review of a[[lications for generic drugs and biologics drugs. Biologics drugs are derived from living organisms and are the industry's fastest growing part.

Goldman Sach economists say that technological improvements have increased productivity but this is not reflected in the statistics. Statistical measurement is an issue they say. Economists at JP Morgan Chase say the problem is that many of the technological improvements have not increased productivity in manufacturing, and there is a misallocation of resources to apps such as Uber and new products that do not increase productivity in the economy. Their view is that this is not a measurement issue, the drop in productivity makes sense and is very real. Compared to earlier shifts in technology this one has provided little in the way of serious improvement.

Kazuo Hirai becomes the new CEO of Sony, succeeding Howard Stringer. Hirai faces some tough decisions at Sony, as the company's position as a pioneer in electronics has been eroded by Apple, and sales of product hardware have been eroded by Samsung Electronics. Hirai says his strategic goal is to get the 168,000 employees of Sony to place getting the user experience right first before anything else. And that simply being a great producer of hardware products isn't enough for Sony. Hirai's experience is in turning around the Playstation videogaming business. To this he brought an unconventional style. He was educated in the U.S. and Canada as the son of an expatriate Japanese banker, and in Japan he went to the American School where he founded its Audiovisual Club. His first job at CBS/Sony Inc. in Japan was as a translator for bands such as the Beastie Boys and Journey during the visits of these bands to Japan.
