Preserving forest areas is a key part of the climate change prevention plan. DW.com gives these video images of a vast forest area in South America- the Gran Chaco that is spread over Argentina and Brazil that faces destruction over time. Deforestation is taking place in the Argentine Chaco at an estimated 250,000 acres per year for 2001 to 2007 according to one estimate. The Gran Chaco that runs into the Brazilian state of Mato Grosso de Sul state is one of the last frontiers of forested areas in the world. If the Climate Change resolution passed at the recent conference on preserving forests is taken seriously this area needs to be preserved.

This article in the New York Times makes an extraordinary report about Rod Rosenstein, U.S. Deputy Attorney General and his views on president Trump following Trump's firing of FBI Director Comey. New York Times says it has based its report on meetings in which Rosenstein participated with Justice Department and FBI officials. Mr. Rosenstein and Mr. Sessions, the Attorney General, attended a meeting at the White House last year with Mr. Trump in which he agreed to write the memo cited by Mr. Trump for firing Mr. Comey. Rod Rosenstein had no idea at the time that Mr. Trump would cite his memo, and felt afterwards that he had been used by Mr. Trump, according to this report in the NYT. Leading Democrats were very critical of Mr. Rosenstein for providing the memo that served as the basis for firing Mr. Comey. Mr. McCabe who succeeded Mr. Comey and others also left the Justice Department and the FBI, and the events of that time has created dissension in the FBI and the Justice Department, leading to the release of this information to the New York Times.  Mr. Rosenstein according to this report based on internal meetings with Justice Department officials, was concerned about the chaotic situation in the White House following the firing of Mr. Comey of the FBI. During this time it is reported here Mr. Rosenstein suggested recording of the president and invoking of the 25th Amendment. The 25th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution provides for removal of the President by the Vice President and cabinet officials on certain grounds such as when the president "is unable to discharge the powers and duties of his office." Mr. Andrew McCabe, who was head of FBI following Mr. Comey's firing was also fired, and he has memorialized his interactions with Mr. Rosenstein in memos that are now with the Mueller investigation.  Not everyone thinks this is a constructive step as a letter in the New York Times questions the wisdom of such a report leading to the departure of Mr. Rosenstein. Mr. Rosenstein is seen by some as defending the Mueller investigation into Russian interference in the U.S. presidential election. But even this may be overstated or in doubt as the criticism of Democrats leading to the the release of the report by the NYT on Rosenstein shows. Mr. Rosenstein says in response to the NYT report that he sees no need for invoking the 25th Amendment. ...

The growing number of women in their 40's who are childless, one person homes, "child-free" adults, higher rates of divorce, are not limited just to Western Europe, the U.S. and Japan. This is spreading rapidly in lower income countries in the Arab world and Asia also. In Europe the progress is relentless. With divorce rates higher and fewer women marrying, the probability of a women of reproductive age getting married in Belgium is about 40%, and divorce at about 50%, according to Eurostat. So that the probability of women getting married and staying married is about 20%. This is true of other European countries also. There is a huge increase in "child-free' adults, men and women choosing voluntarily to not have children. The proportion of childless women in their 40's is highest in Berlin and Hamburg, nearly 33%, about 25% in Italy, and 20% in Sweden. One person homes are increasing in Western Europe, with about 32% in Europe and 45% in Denmark, not from aging alone as in Denmark as many as twice the number of one person homes are under age 65 than over 65. The UN population Division's "World Marraige Data 2012," shows that places like Morocco, Libya, and other parts of the Arab world are also experiencing these trends, with income and schooling levels much lower than in Europe and the U.S. These trends are now worldwide and affecting traditionally conservative societies like China....

The United Farmworkers union was formed by migrant farm workers Cesar Chavez and Dolores Huerta to bring decent wages and good working conditions for farm labour in the US, with most of the work done in California farm areas. March 31st is now Cesar Chavez Day in the US with a Biden proclamation. His niece is shown in the adjoining article as an adviser in the White House and now campaign manager for 2024. She is a softspoken Latina who grew up around Chavez in the fields and farm pickup trucks of the sixties and seventies, as shown in the Washington Post on this page. Biden has proposed an overtime rule for farmworkers, and ensuring farm workers get a fair wage and decent working conditions is the goal of the White House- including recovering $21 million in back pay and wages ensuring 26,000 farm workers get the wages they earned. And remaining steadfast says Biden to ensure workers get paid sick leave, good working conditions. ...

The federal government in the US is providing internet connections to rural part of America through its Internet for All program. The Biden administration has committed $60 billion to this program. At what point is satellite service that is less reliable but more cost efficient an alternative, asks this report in WSJ if service in Montana can cost $300,000 per location, or in a Indian reservation in Nebraska at $54,000 per household. These are remote locations and require drilling in mountainous areas and under the Missouri river. For the majority of locations the  average FCC Rural Digital Opportunity Fund location cost is $1753, the Treasury Capital Project Fund $3313, and the tribal projects are outliers for isolated spots. The government prefers fiber optic cables because this is good for generations to come for upgrading, and the benefits of this service will make rural areas of America attractive to live in for decades to come, say officials.

The rapidly changing situation in energy is shown by the $15 billion German government rescue of Uniper, which contains the legacy fossil fuel assets of Germany's E.ON electricity maker. The war in Ukraine has made energy security a priority, leaving fossil fuel assets at risk of getting stranded. This is what happened at Uniper as Germany moves quickly to develop renewable sources to replace Russian fossil fuels. Clean energy investment is increasing rapidly as many green energy options are cost effective. Two thirds of electricity is generated in countries where it is cheaper to build new solar or onshore wind facilities than to run existing gas or coal powered facilities. Offshore wind with newer technologies will soon be cheaper also. Higher fuel and emissions prices, the cost of running older facilities in extreme weather, also increase risk of stranded assets.   To understand how quickly the situation is changing and can lead to stranded assets - solar energy is now half the cost of energy from coal or natural gas at today's prices as shown in the graphs in this WSJ article. Large investment in research and new technology will only decrease the cost of solar and wind energy to 2025 and 2030, increasing the investments in renewable energy and speeding up the curve for transition to renewable sources, with the added impetus of government support to achieve COP26 targets. ...

Moody's Investor's Service downgrades China's credit rating to A1 from Aa3. Moody's predicts a slowdown in growth for China. GDP growth for 1st quarter 2017 was 6.9%. Total debt has grown from 149% of gross domestic product in 2008, to 213% in 2013, and is now 253%, according to JP Morgan. The problem is that ever higher levels of credit have supported growth and more of this is coming from the shadow banking sector. Higher levels of debt in future years from the already high levels will weigh heavily on growth, leading to an eventual slowdown in the economy's growth rate.

After the Dred Scott decision by the Supreme Court stated that slavery was affirmed in the constitution, and there were efforts in the Senate in 1861 to continue with another compromise that allowed slavery to continue and expand in the south, and after secession of some states under his predecessor, Lincoln had to keep saying no to a compromise or any rejection of the union. Even after huge losses, and battle weariness of northern and southern states, Lincoln had to have that deep inner faith, a faith in Almighty God and his purpose for the Union, to reject peace negotiations with the southern states that conceded anything on slavery. ...

Following the Wisconsin primary Ted Cruz plans his campaign to prepare for a contested convention. The strategy is to focus on California, and states such as Nebraska and Indiana, and on delegate selection, so that Trump has little chance of winning the required 1237 delegates on the first ballot at the Republican Convention. To do this Cruz plans to hire additional staff, and work at the local city and county level winning endorsements from local and state officials. A similiar process unfolded in the Wisconsin primary, with local Republican base support that was crucial to his win. The feud between New Jersey Governor, Chris Christie, and the head of the state teacher's union, Ms. Keshishian. Governor Christie called the state legislature into an emergency session and pushed through a 2% cap on annual increases in property taxes, which have risen 70% over the last decade in New Jersey. The issue is whether the extent of spending on education is sustainable in New Jersey. New Jersey's median property tax is the highest in the nation, at $6,579. By comparison New York is $3,755 and Illinois $3,507. New Jersey residents pay an average of 11.8% for property taxes. Both sides have engaged in strong rhetoric and the teachers union has attacked the Governor in television ads. Governor Christie refused to discuss issues with Keshishian, and ended a meeting in his office, with "Not with you. I don't." The teachers argues that New Jersey schools provides some of the best schooling in the nation- the state's high school graduation is 82%, and it ranks among the top 5 states in key subject areas, according to the Education Law Center in Newark. Its graduation center for black males is 69%. New Jersey also has a heavily unionized public sector with relatively high wages for public workers of all kinds, including teachers. This and a state supreme court decision mandating increased funding for schools in poor communities raises the cost per pupil to $17,794, the highest in the nation, after Washington D.C. New York is at $16,981. California, and Illinois spend $11,000. The average New Jersey teacher makes $61,277 a year, well above the U.S. average of $52,800, according to the National Education Association. Medical and other benefits add $19,140 according to the teacher's union. And the unsustainability goes back to issues such as unfunded liabilities for benefits and pensions in New Jersey. New Jersey's Treasurer estimates the unfunded liabilities relating to lifetime health benefits for current and retired teachers at $36.32 billion....

Buddhism gives people the opportunity follow a path to spiritual life and peace of mind without getting involved in politics. Here NYT provides a look at Buddhism in China as it is practiced to get people to set better moral standards to rejuvenate China. The founder was a small child traveling across China with his mother searching for their father after the Japanese invasion of China. He joined a monastery they passed by. After the Communist takeover of the mainland in 1949 and during the years of the Cultural Revolution he was active in a missionary movement for Buddhism and Buddhist culture in Taiwan.  Chinese president Xi Jinping has met with him 4 times and supports the movement in China as part of an effort to rejuvenate China and improve moral standards lost during the rush to modernization and industrialization. At one point even telling him "I have read all the books you have sent me Master."  For this movement to revive Buddhist culture and ethics the politics is secondary, what matters is the quality of people's lives and their finding fulfillment by living lives that honor the values of a good society that is caring for fellow beings, and practicing good moral standards.  Imagine a 100 acre facility that holds 2 million books in Yangzhou, including 100,000 volume collection of Buddhist scriptures. Built in two valleys of bamboo forest the temple in Yixing  is special, the atmosphere quiet and reflective, and with reading rooms, rooms for calligraphy, for tea. It was started in 2006 and is active with many people visiting the temple. In Buddhist countries such as Burma, Sri Lanka, Thailand, wherever Buddhism has got entangled with politics the purity and purpose of Buddhism has suffered. Putting Buddhist culture, learning, and quality of living first is essentially the way the Buddha had meant it to be. In a rare and profound way both Mr. Xi and the founder of this Buddhist group have made a unique and lasting connection to rejuvenate China after 100 years of tumult, war, and strife that started with the wars at Chinese ports in the 1850's, and 50 years of rush to industrialize that made weary and weakened the soul of a nation. During the period post coronavirus pandemic China and the Chinese people may find in Buddhist culture much that can enhance the quality of life just as the European nations France, Britain and Germany look back to their own culture and tradition for rejuvenation and renewal. In this sense even as China faces a West determined to protect its industry and technology, and returns to its roots, China can find a way to its own roots, confident that the period of European domination can no longer torment its soul. ...
