Bernie Sanders with 46% of the delegates, 13.4 million votes, 22 states, and many of the young people in the U.S. behind him, told a news reporter at his home in the final sprint two weeks before the election- he plans to see the major planks of the Democratic platform implemented. He said Clinton is progressive on a number of issues, but the platform is more progressive with upward mobility a critical concern. Sanders played a critical role in shaping the platform. WIth a win for Democrats in the Senate Sanders will become either the chairman of the Budget Committee, or with his preference chairman of the Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee. His main goal now is to see key economic Cabinet positions that affect upward mobility, intergenerational mobility, which is damaged today for the middle and working class, go to persons who would do the most to improve it.  ...

A unanimous vote of the Chinese Communist Party Congress now puts "Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics in a New Era" into the Chinese Constitution. As the 19th Party Congress ends Xi Jinping joins two other leaders of the Communist Party Mao  Zedong and Deng Xiaoping, who were so honored. It also appears that unlike previous leaders Jiang Zemin and Hu Jintao, Xi Jinping is concentrating authority and direction for China. This Congress marks the end of Xi's second five year term as party general secretary.  Under Hu Jintao there were efforts by some Communist leaders to create new power bases. This period ended with Xi Jinping bringing a clear direction and authority under the Communist Party. This has led to China taking on a leadership role in the world economy and global political affairs after the election of Trump in the U.S. in 2017. The management of the economy also has provided a soft landing after threats of disruptions in trade relations with the U.S. ...

Lower oil prices in 2015 make it possible for president Joko Widodo of Indonesia to remove costly fuel subsidies in Jan. 2015. With the steep decline in oil prices this made it possible to lower fuel prices at the pump at the same time. The costly fuel subsidies cost Indonesia more than money spent on education and healthcare. This frees up money for other programs. In November the Widodo government fulfilled one of its election promises by sending out national "smart cards" to over 15 million poor Indonesian families, which gives them free health insurance and education related expenses for children for upto 12 years of school. Programs planned for infrastructure in 2015 include 13 new dams and long overdue upgrade to the north-south Trans Sumatra Highway. The shadow economy is about 24% of Greece's economy, according to a study at the University of Chicago. Unreported income is $28 billion or 15% of GDP. The Greek government of Antonis Samaras is taking new steps to tackle this problem. New regulations allow customers to go without paying if service providers refuse to give a receipt for the transaction. Restaurants will be required to post the regulation in their menus. Ormat, a geothermal energy company, faces resistance to a new geothermal plant in Nevada.  130 residents in the desert town of Gerlach fear it will affect spring water in the ground. Ormat has 15 plants in Nevada that produce 433 megawatts or electricity for 325,000 homes. NYT shows this as an example of how conservationists who favor green energy find themselves pitted against energy companies doing renewable energy for profit. The Burning Man festival held in the desert has a large carbon footprint every year.

At a time when family physicians in Britain are experiencing burnout a plan for patients to use text messages to rate family physicians by the new Health Secretary Sajid Javid arouses intense criticism. A former Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt and the British AMA say the Boris Johnson government's effort to increase in person appointnments by offering incentives of 250 million pounds was a bad idea. They say efforts should be made to attract 6000 more general practitioners rather than demoralize family physicians who are already burned out.

Germany has a patchwork of restrictions to tackle coronavirus. This is a serious problem during the third wave in April 2021. There is a lack of clarity as the 16 states within Germany's federal structure each make their own rules. This has weakened the power of the federal government and chancellor Merkel in setting rules for the whole country. A You.Gov poll shows 53% of Germans support the federal government setting the rules. Interior minister Seehofer is considering a new federal law to make this happen.

The U.S. and India see a surge in coronavirus cases. Per day cases surged to 40,000 on June 25 in U.S. and 17,000 in India. Alabama, Idaho, Nevada, Arizona, California, Florida are seeing a surge in new cases. Texas, California and Florida all recorded more than 5000 cases each. In California cases for hospitalization surged 32% with more than 4200 in hospitals.

India now has 490,000 cases with death toll of 15,301. Indian Railways cancelled all bookings. In the U.S. Texas is paused reopening plans.

The German lower and upper houses of parliament, the Bundestag and the Bundesrat, passed legislation to end the use of coal by 2038. The phase out has two parts one is the legal avenue for reduction in emissions, the other is the regional economies of affected states. The government will provide 40 billion euros for restructuring economies, including reskilling workers and providing new infrastructure, for the effort. coal operators will also receive compensation if they announce plans for closure of coal plants by 2026.

The Indian government's chief economic advisor, Kaushik Basu, says the opening up of India's retail sector would have benefitted everyone including middle traders. This would happen because the retail sector would go through a vast expansion creating room for more players even though the per unit margin from products would go down. Experts say the infusion of new technologies and investment in India's supply chain and cold storage setup would help reduce food prices and inflation. Basu made the comments at the launching of the New Oxford Companion to Economics in India in Feb 2012.
