A poll done by the International Republican Institute, a nonprofit affiliated with the Republican party, of 3500 people across Pakistan found a couple of important things. The Republican Institute's goal is to promote democracy in the developing world. 1. Popularity of President Zardari at 9% and Nawas Sharif's at 55%. The US resumed contacts with Sharif, and Sharif is seen as able to bring the Islamic moderates to the American side. 2. Economic issues are what concerns Pakistanis most. Refugees are approaching the 1 million number according to the UN High Commissioner for Refugees. 3. 81% said the country was going in the wrong direction, Zardari was never elected and is incompetent and this could be the reason. But military is still unpopular, 77% want democratic rule, possibly with Sharif or some sort of combination of Sharif, lawyers movement, and Islamic moderates in charge. 4. From alow of 9% in January 2008, now 37% are willing to work with the USA against extremism. Could Obama's election and US support of Pakistan's effort to heal itself be apart of this change of heart? 5. 45% support fighting extremists in the tribal areas and the Northwest Frontier Province. And 69% say having the Taliban and Al Quaeda operate in Pakistan is a serious problem. If these poll results accurately reflect shifting feeling in Pakistan, American help to help Pakistan pull itself up by its bootstraps economically and unify the country under a democratic administration of Islamic moderates and people from other areas like the lawyers movement, could work. It also improves the prospects of pulling out of Afghanistan after the situation improves, and setting up an administration that comprises Islamic moderates and tribal representatives that keeps out Al Quaeda, and works to rebuild Afghanistan after seemingly endless years of war. These efforts would require cooperation of Iran, India, Pakistan and the US, and assistance of countries like Turkey, in creating an atmosphere that promotes peaceful development in the entire region. ...

McChrystal as one of the five best generals in the army today according to one general who worked with him in Iraq, and the perfect man for th job. He was chief of staff for an army task force during operations to overthrow the Taliban in Afghnistan so his work with Afghanistan goes back many years. He is a field and hands on kind of guy, and at the same time has the intellect and listening ability to coordinate things with others, which may be badly needed here.

The WSJ editorial says Gen McChrystal may bring the qualities of flexibility and imagination, and intellect, the way General Petraeus did to the war in Iraq. It says Defense Secretary Gates did well with President Obama to bring achange of leadership to the American effort to bring security to the Afghan people from the Taliban militants. It was the leisurely way the NATO effort proceeded under Gen. McKiernan in building the Afghan army- the only remaining institution that commands confidence in the country - that WSJ faults for having gone on too long. The other institutions like the corrupt police, and the failing government of Hamid Karzai, along with the spread of opium farming in the south have led to further deterioration in security.

This fuels feeling among ordinary Afghan people that the corrupt or criminal can get themselves out of jail. In this case the tribal elders who advocated his release may themselves have faced threats from the Taliban and argued for his release. He was killed in a US pinpoint bombing raid.

More troops on the ground to avoid civilian casualties from air attacks and bombings which can antagonizepeople and create more young militants exposed to religious extremist propaganda, huge investment in development, piecemeal arrangements with the local tribes and powerbrokers including the Taliban, help to Pakistan and concentrating its mind on the effort in its frontier areas so close to its capital Islamabad. At the same time building support inside Pakistan for a liberal state that remains Islamic but keeps religion out of the state, and builds alasting peace in South Asia without getting mired in conflicts like Kashmir which it calls "intractable disputes" that may be bypassed for an overall peace.

How the Airbus 380 project went astray and fell apart, and how it was put back on track. The story in some detail how the French and the German engineering groups in Toulouse and Hamburg failed to work together. How the German group was working with poor design software and simply fell behind, leading to the collapse of the program and the failure to put the wiring of the plane which extended for miles. 300 miles and 30,000 cables, something the Germans had never handled before. They had struggled with simpler versions of Airbus and now they were totally unprepared for this. A German engineer, Fuchs in Hamburg, worked closely with the French, transferring German engineering groups to Toulouse. French engineers in Toulouse were more advanced in the details of the work and in software design under French engineer Carcasses. The other problem that the Germans faced was that their individual engineering groups were poorly integrated and did not talk to each other, accelerating the collapse of the project. ...

Pearlstein says American Airlines (AMR) management had hoped to reduce employees count by 13,000, reduce benefits for employees and retirees and reform work rules by going through bankruptcy in the manner of other airlines such as Delta and Northwest. As it turns out AMR's unions and US Airways have made their own deal and come up with labor agreements that are likely to result in a merger deal with AMR with 1.2 billion in savings from synergies, instead of relying on labor savings for $800 million as AMR management had planned. This is because US Airways CEO, Doug Parker, sees increased savings and revenue from a new combined airline and a better hands on management team. Part of the reason is also the the way the combined airline provides additional feeder traffic from smaller cities to hubs in the east coast and midwest markets and in the Miami routes to South America. The Pension Benefit Guarantee Corporation also tacitly sees the benefit of a stronger airline so that its funds are not depleted further by having to support AMR's underfunded pension plan. The creditors have also realized what all this means by increasing the value of AMR bonds to 50 cents on the dollar from 30 cents on the dollar....

David Segal takes a detailed look inside Apple's retail stores in the U.S. and talks with employees at different stores to find out what its like working as an hourly employee at an Apple store. World wide Apple's 327 global stores sold $16 billion in Apple products. Per employee the sales are about $473,000, but at an hourly rate of about $12 the average employee makes about $25,000 per year. After recent wage raises this could be up to about $36,000. The National Retail Federation says electronics stores have about an average of $206,000 in sales per employee. Contrary to what most people may think most of Apple's employees are not engineers and other professionals, about 30,000 of the 43,000 Apple employees in the U.S. work as hourly employees in the retail stores. Most are young people in the early 20's, single, with health insurance provided by Apple not costing as much for that age group. There is no career path and most leave after a couple of years. Because of the Apple mystique and the drive to create new user friendly products there are many young people looking for this kind of temporary work, especially now with high unemployment. ...

Jean Claude Juncker, the newly elected president of the European Commission, was prime minister of Luxembourg for 18 years. During that period Luxembourg pursued policies that enabled large corporations to evade taxes by setting up in Luxembourg and paying taxes below 1%. A prominent British MP says it is outrageous that Juncker should be looking after tax issues in Europe with such a dismal record on taxes. He was elected with the support of Germany over Britsh objections, because he was supported by the largest elected bloc in the 2014 EU elections. But a new study by London based Open Europe shows the centre right parties supporting Juncker's candidacy won only 9.7% of the vote. The candidacy also did not receive the close scrutiny that should go with a position of such importance. The result is that the European Commission will suffer from a lack of credibility during his tenure at a time when the Commission was criticized for its bureaucratic structures, and back room deals. The criticism from Britain is especially strong. Ironically German chancellor Merkel supported Juncker to bring some element of democratic support from the EU parliament into the process of selection, which now appears to be weak....

The Afghan School in Kabul run by former Taliban officials for girls and boys is one of the best schools in Kabul. Boys and girls attend chemistry classes together. Taliban officials see the schools as a bridge between madrassas and modern schools, and now accept the idea that as long as Islamic ideals are respected girls should go to school like boys. A former Taliban foreign minister- of the government the U.S. ousted under president Bush- now helps his daughter with homework. The changes in neighboring Pakistan where the government of Nawaz Sharif is pushing modern ideas and technological development are likely to push progress in Afghanistan as well- this happens as the U.S. withdraws from Afghanistan. The U.S. leaves a region hungry for progress as new governments pushing technological development supported by business emerge in Pakistan and India in 2013-2014. Unfulfilled promises of economic development are at the forefront of people's minds. A transformation as large as the shift from communism in China to state run market economy and the technological and economic transformation that followed is now at its early beginnings in the region. This shift would be from religious strife and socialist structures to a market economy....

The current number of American soldiers in Afghanistan of 32,000 in May 2014 will be reduced to about 9,800 after 2014, which would be cut to about 5000 in 2015, an leave only a small force of specially trained forces to protect the embassy and for additional security. Residual forces will include trainers and Special Operations forces to keep a check on Quaeda loyalists in remote parts of Afghanistan and in the mountains. The drones have accomplished much of the work done in earlier phases of the war by ground troops. The Afghan war has also been all about Pakistan. The completion of a full term in office of a democratically elected government for the first time, and the election of the Sharif government, including the participation of tribal and other Muslim extremists in elections, have been the hidden face of the war changing its face in other ways. The beginning of a focus on development in Pakistan and India, and the election of a new government in Aghanistan, the peace talks with the Taliban, are other parts of the shift to winding down America's presence coming from changes in the region itself- by changing the very nature of the conflict itself and isolating the most extremist elements....

Ford and GM employ 120,000 workers in Europe and sell roughly 4 million cars there. GM sold nearly a fourth of the 9.37 million cars it made worldwide in Europe in 2007. And 60% of these cars are small cars like theFocus and Fiesta in Europe for Ford and the Corsa and Astra in Europe for GM. The presence of a gas tax may be what makes Europeans choose smaller cars as gasoline is expensive in Europe. What makes them profitable in Europe is they are generally sold with all the features of bigger quality cars and command higher prices so that small does not mean cheap. But is there any reason that given the experience of Americans with gas prices, and a culture of energy conservation among younger and newer customers. apossible gas tax that funds public transportation projects, and the poor state of household finances, that the better appointed smaller cars that are popular in Europe cannot make their way into American homes. With all the experience with small cars in Europe are GM and Ford simply lacking both the vision and the courage to try something new with these cars when their bets with larger cars have failed....

Southwest Airlines CEO Kelly says studies have shown passengers just want to know if their flight is going to go and at what time. So he stresses these things, because travel is not perfect and its how his airline handles these situations that matters. He says its not a reach to say that Southwest is getting the 5% of revenues that is the max he thinks you can get from baggage fees, by simply not charging as passengers hate these fees. He wants to use new technology to manage fares better. Asked about things getting bette, green shoots of recovery, he isnt optimistic. He says Southwest has to be prepared for a lot of uncertainty and instability, and operate with an abundance of caution. He goes on to say what he sees as different in this downturn. Saying he wishes that steroids were legal, because the speed at which we identify issues , study them and make decisions is unlike anything he has experienced before. In Southwest's culture this is the difference between furloughing employees, grounding planes, and reducing flights and running as close to normal as possible. The cushion is gone now, and he has to manage risk much more carefully. This is good advice for other executives....

There are more women drivers in the U.S. than men. In 2011 50.5% of licensed drivers were women. This is an increase from the 39.6% figure in 1963, according to the Federal Highway Administration. Part of the reason for this is the decline in young men getting drivers licenses, and the larger share of older drivers with more women in that age group. Even though women still earn less than men the numbers are increasing, with women making 81 cents to every dollar made by men in 2012, increasing from 62 cents in 1979. In educaton levels achieved women are doing better- Labor Dept figures show 30% of women born in the early 1980's with bachelors degrees, and only 22% for men. That suggests their earning prospects will continue to increase. Studies by R.L. Polk show women prefer more fuel efficient cars. A study by RDA Group shows women buying the average new car in 2012 at a price 12% less than the average car bought by men. Only two of the top ten cars purchased by women in 2012 were U.S. brands- the Ford Escape at No.7 and the Chevy Equinox at No. 9. This shows that Ford, GM and Chrysler have more work to do to attract women customers....

The White House announced it has the plan for regulatory reform outlined in a 85 page white paper. It provides the bbasic steps planned and the the reasons the administration chose to modernize the existing setup analogous to redesigning and making improvements based on the existing framework rather than building from the ground up. The five key steps are: 1) Increase the power of the Federal Reserve to provide strong and consistent supervision of the larges financial firms. 2) Getting Congress to authorize the government to dismatle large firms to avoid the kind of chaotic collapse that ocurred at Lehman and which worsened this crisis. 3) New rules for derivatives trading and securites built from mortgage loans. 4) Creating anew agency to protect consumers of mortgage, credit card, and other financial products. 5) the administration having a setup to increase coordination with other countries to prevent businesses from migrating to less regulated locations. Obama's comments to CNBC were " Speed is important. We weant to do it right. We want to do it carefully. But we don't want to tilt at windmills. We want to make sure that we're getting the best possible regulatory framework in place so that we're not repeating the mistakes of the past."...

There are serious serious flaws with the FDA regulations for weight loss pills and dietary supplements. THe law enacted in 1994 gives the FDA jurisdiction only after the pills go on the market whereas for drugs they get reviewed first. THe re is only aspot checking of manufacturers and distributors once the pills are on the dshelves or on the internet. THe FDA believes there may be hundreds of contaminated weight loss diet supplements. Says Michael Levy director of the FDA's deivision of New Drugs and Labeling Compliance, alarge percentage of these products contain dangerous undeclared ingredients. Even after the products are on the market the FDA does not have thability to remove pills from stores, initially the law allows that its upto the companies to issue arecall. It is only eventually that the FDA can act and it does not have the resources to deal with this problem. This even though these ingredients can cause heart atttacks, seizures, and all kinds of health problems. About $27 billion are spent on dietary supplement, $1.7 billion on weight loss pills, and 15% of the population say they have used weight loss supplements, and most have not told their doctors about it. ...

How Renault- Nissan execute plan to build low cost cars for markets in Eastern Europe, Russia, Brazil, Mexico, North Africa and India, China. A new plant with initial capacity of 200,000 Logan type small cars to open in Tangiers, Morocco. Plants already operate in Brazil, Columbia, Mexico and Russia for Logan type vehicles. The Logan small car at $7500 is still a middle class car in countries like India so Renault is talking to Bajaj Auto of India,a maker of motorbikes and scooters, about making a $3000 car. The scenario that large automakers are looking at is one in which makers of small cars in India like Tata and Cherry in China master the art of making small cars with lower cost components and good quality and then move upscale using this expertise to underprice them in their segments like Toyota and Honda have done. Renault moved into the low cost segment in Sept 2004 with the Logan made in Romania, so its moving quickly in this segment and it is becomin a key part of Renault-nissan's global strategy. Note that Logan sales are about 400,000 but only 50,000 of these sold in France and Germany relatively small sales in Western Europe. ...

There are 5000 heavy truck charging stations in the US, mostly in depots and warehouses. And just five, only five public charging stations for heavy trucks. Imagine taking billions of tons of emissions from the heaviest polluters heavy trucks when very few only 2% of electric heavy trucks are sold today. New emissions rules that restrict the amount of emissons in a truck manufacturers product line would mean that 25% of heavy trucks and 40% of medium trucks will be electric by 2032. This includes school buses to cement mixers, and includes 100 types of heavy vehicles that cover tractor trailers, RV's, ambulances, garbage trucks and moving vans. The infrastructure law and the Inflation Reduction Act provide government aid- $7.6 billion electric charging infrastructure including heavy trucks, and $5.6 billion for zero or low emission buses. Another $1 billion for electric trucks and $40,000 as tax credit for companies buying electric trucks. For cars the new EPA rules from the Biden administration target an all electric or hybrid car population in the US by 2032.  This will be done by focussing on the two thirds of heavy trucks that go for less than 250 miles a day and trucks like moving vans, school buses and garbage trucks that drive less and go back to the same depot point to recharge. Volvo Trucks, Kenworth, BYD and Nikola, and Cummins engine are manufacturers who are working on new technologies and manufacturing. It is one of the great twists of history that a dedicated Indian Civil Service Joint Secretary, follower of Mohandas Gandhi,  at a time of transformation through education of India's Madras State in 1954-63 under visionary chief minister K Kamaraj, has shaped the life and thinking of his grand daughter Kamala Harris in profound ways. Gopalan had seen and been part of the huge transformation in India wrought by Gandhi in the 1930's and 1940's. Pictures of Shyamala Gopalan with her parents P. V. and  Rajam Gopalan, and her two daughters Kamala and Maya, shown in the NYT. Kamala Harris was the first child of Shyamala who came to the US from Madras state as a young graduate student in 1954, in one of the first batches of students coming from independent India to the US.  Madras, now Tamilnadu, was being led by one of its most far sighted leaders K. Kamaraj who was chief minister from 1954 to 1963. It was Kamaraj who set up the free school lunch program in Madras state and helped bring literacy to the state and a strong educational system that would support economic development. This is important because Kamala draws her strength from her mother and her mother draws strength from her father P.V. Gopalan, a Indian civil servant in the visionary Kamaraj government in Madras state. Kamala spent time with her grandfather on visits to India which have shaped the way she thinks and her view of life. P.V Gopalan was Joint Secretary Government of India Ministry of Labour, Employment and Rehabilitation, and was sent to Zambia as Director of Relief Measures and Refugees to handle an exodus of refugees from Southern Rhodesia to Zambia. The two experiences as Joint Secretary, and as Director in Zambia, during the period when Kamaraj led Madras State were profound life changing experiences for this young civil servant who shared his understanding of Asia and Africa with his granddaughter in profound ways shaping her views on life, and what it means to be a good Civil Servant in public service to the people. Passing on to a new generation the ideas of public service of Mohandas Gandhi that P.V. Gopalan had witnessed at close range in his lifetime. ...

Britain, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand have redefined citizenship so that it is along blood lines, and not birthright citizenship. The 14th Amendment of the US Constitution was passed by Congress in 1866 and ratified by the States in 1868. It uses the words-"All persons born or naturalised in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction therof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside."  The US Supreme Court will have to interpret this language and intent of the Amendment whether they intended it to apply to children of unauthorized migrants coming illegally into the country. At the time it was passed after the Civil War it was intended to emancipate freed black slaves and give children of freed slaves citizenship and rights. Congress, the States and the Supreme Court will have to consider whether the situation intended to be addressed in 14th Amendment was slavery and not the refugees and economic driven illegal migrants flowing in at the rate of 1-2 million a year as happened in 2021-2023. The Supreme Court in its Wong Kim Ark decision in 1898 supported the 14th Amendment at a time when illegal entry into the US was a tiny fraction of what it is today.   The 14th Amendment included under Section 4 on Debt the words- "Neither the United States nor any State shall assume or pay any debt any claim for the loss or emancipation of any slave; but all such debts, obligations and claims shall be held illegal and void." The 14th Amendment was  in its intent designed to complete the work of the Civil War to free black slaves and give them the rights of citizenship. The 14th Amendment to the US Constitution Section 1 says- "All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside. No State shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States; nor shall any State deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws." ...
