This Economic Times report shows 20 Government of India ministries and agencies are involved in logistics for exports. A recent shipment of mahua flowers from Chhatisgarh to Le Havre port in France was held up for 2 weeks at Mumbai's Nava Shheva port, as cited here in the The Economic Times. Logistics help from Maersk helped China build its industrial capabilities. The port capabilities in logistics grew year after year from small beginnings in the 1990 period. Mr. Modi is starting this process in India as it is a key driver for foreign investment in the country. As China's logistics capabilities grew companies had the confidence that products manufactured in the country could be delivered to US and Europe efficiently and at low cost. This process takes a decade and the time to start building this capability is now with plans, stretch goals, investment and timely delivery. Chinese state owned banks provide access to financing for projects and other infrastructure companies build projects using about 60% of labour from China, on low interest rates but with payment over shorter periods than with World Bank projects. The U.S. lags far behind in investing in African infrastructure which badly needs modernization. 

The drawback of debt load is being balanced by exploring for oil in Uganda and keeping the debt load manageable. CNOOC is exploring for oil near Lake Albert. Uganda received $1.4 billion from 200 to 2014, in 2015 another $1.9 billion for 2 dams, and now $2.2 billion loan for new railways.

The EU parliament's 705 seats are to be filled, and the party getting the most seats gets to name the president of the European Commission. GM plans to bring the Chevy Volt, a plug in type of car that will run more on the battery than the Toyota Prius- which uses gasoline support as soon as it picks up speed- to market in 3 years. But it doesn't yet know how it will do it. What created the opportunity is that Toyota is having a hard time of its own trying to figure out a battery that can provide more electric power, more punch, that would raise the Prius mpg from 46 to about 80 mpg. Its lithium ion technology batteries to achieve this haven't passed the safety tests so Toyota is pushing this back to 2011. This created a opportunity for GM to come up with its own for a plug in Chevy Volt. Its looking a small companies in the US that might supply these batteries. GM has come up with 2 consortiums of suppliers, one from MIT called A123 that is based on the work of MIT Prof.Yet-Ming Chinag who works with iron phosphate technology that is less prone to fires and safety issues. The other is led by S. Korean chemical maker LG Chem. Toshiba is working on research for a lithium ion battery for cars that will be safe on the Japanese side. It is not clear how this will turn out because batteries for laptops have had fires and safety issues, but the R&D is on in earnest for a new safe electric battery for cars. And automakers know its not just about an electric car. On it rests the image and innovation leader perception that is so important in marketing that no amount of advertising can fix, as the US automakers have learned to their extreme grief. ...

Prices of Cheerios cereal up 17% on a per ounce basis, General Mills has simply taken out the 10 ounce box and put in an 8.9 ounce box. Kellogg cereal company is doing the same thing as the input costs of grain for its cereal went up by 9%. And retail stores are taking advantage of thhis situation by adding an increase of their own on top of this. And this is going on in many places from icecream cartons to beverage containers, smaller sizes and higher prices. Food prices inflation estimates vary from 4.5 to 5.5% in 2008, and 4-5% in 2009 from Department of Agriculture to Well Fargo's estimates of 6% in 2009 and Farm Sector Economics estimate of 7.5%. Not only are companies raising prices but they are doing so frequently, Alpha Baking Company is paying twice as much for wheat flour from a year ago to make bread and buns, now it changes prices quarterly. This poses an interesting question for the Fed's fight against inflation, does an increase in interest rates mean these companies faced with rising costs of inputs are going to respond by not increasing prices that much? Its the shortage of grain supplies that is driving this food price increases and how would increasing rates make a difference? And most of the inflation is in food and crude oil prices, wage inflation is modest with rising unemployment and a slowing economy....
