According to the Labor Department nonfarm payrolls went down by 131,000 in July 2010. 71,000 jobs were added in the private sector and 143,000 temporary census workers were jobless. For June data, a revision shows that payrolls declined by 221,000 and not by 125,000 as previously reported. Overall for the first 7 months of 2010 the US had 100,000 jobs added a month on average, which will not make a dent in unemployment. Unemployment remained at 9.5%. In addition to poor rate of job additions in the private sector, the budgetary situation of states and local governments is exacerbating the situation. 48,000 jobs were lost in state and local governments in July. 45% of the unemployed or 6.6 million Americans were jobless for more than 6 months, making finding a job more difficult.

He says no innovation happens with too many people in a room, and its easier for two or three people to nurture an idea. A clicker hangs outside the door of the main conference room. IDC estimates show Samsung increased its global smartphone shipments in the second quarter of 2012 to 50.2 million units, up from 42.2 million units in the first quarter. This increased its market share to 32.6%, up from 29.1% in the first quarter. By comparison Apple sales of smartphones globally were 26 million in the second quarter of 2012, with its market share declining from 24.2% in the first quarter to 16.9% in the second quarter.

Filled Bundesliga stadiums are a big problem, says DW.com Sports Editor, Sarah Wiertz. Germany faces a crisis with hospitalizations and in ICU's in November 2021. Borussia Dortmund stadium has lowest permitted capacity rate of all of 82%- this is still 67,000 spectators. She says this is not normality at last, it is absurd. Union Berlin applied for full capacity if it only admitted vaccinated and recovered spectators in the game against Hertha Berlin this week and got it approved. It is not good enough to say German Football League Association has 94% of its players, coaches and staff vaccinated.  With the alarming situation at German hospitals, many breakthrough infections, crowding in the stadiums is not responsible behaviour of Bundesliga clubs and fans. This is how the first wave hit Italy hard in 2020 March when soccer stadiums were filled to capacity, not a situation to be forgotten so quickly. ...

Jens Thurau talks about the chaos in Germany during this wave of the coronavirus in DW.com, and asks who is to blame- Merkel? The deniers? German behaviour sticking to rules? Lack of digitization technology culture? 

A German man 3 days short of his 60th birthday is turned away from a vaccination center because Astra Zeneca vaccine can only be given to persons above 60 years. The man is sent away starting a heated discussion at the vaccination center whether this was the right thing to do. He is ironically sent way because he is too young. Common sense has not prevailed.

Elsewhere local rules that are set down to the streets and house numbers where masks must be worn have been written down and followed. And deniers seem to think they have gone through enough hardships, when Italy and other countries have gone through much worse. German angst, he asks?

Jerome Powell, the new head of the U.S. Federal Reserve values continuity in policy, suggesting that the U.S. central bank will gradually raise interest rates in 2018. A raise is expected at the March 2018 Fed meeting. Powell said at his swearing in ceremony- "While the challenges we face are always evolving, the Fed's approach will remain the same. We are in the process of gradually normalizing both interest rate policy and our balance sheet with a view to extending the recovery."  Five interest rate increases since December 2015 have taken the short term benchmark rate to a range between 1.25% and 1.5%. During 2018 3-4 rate increases are expected.

Powell is seen as a consensus oriented leader with a focus on careful evaluation and rigorous study. Powell is pushing for a continuation of the Fed's policy to improve transparency, and responsiveness.

A former cricketer who helped Pakistan win the World Cup, is elected prime minister of Pakistan, His party leads in the 2018 elections with 120 seats, the party of Mr. Sharif with its base in the Punjab wins 60 seats, and the party of the Bhuttos with its base in Sind province wins 40 seats. Imran Khan has the support of the military in Pakistan.

Mr. Sharif was ousted as prime minister before the election on corruption charges first revealed in the Panama Papers. 

Pakistan faces challenges of managing its economic relationship with China with debt repayments to China for infrastructure projects leading to a planned IMF bailout in 2019. The relationship with India remains strained over Kashmir, and leads to a situation in which the military runs external affairs of the country. The economic and political issues need to be untangled so that Pakistan and the rest of South Asia can divert resources from defense to economic development.

Sheryl Sandberg offers some advice based on experience on raising kids after the loss of a spouse. She points to this concept called "mattering" in sociology, that is important in helping children build resilience. It begins with the parent showing that the child matters and is important, and creating a nurturing environment where the child feels that she is important for the world around her, that she matters, and that people care for him or her, and also rely on the child. Children feel emotions while growing up and in daily interactions at school and social life, and this includes negative emotions that can bring them down. It is important to have these coping skills and feel strong at that time to deal with these emotions and situations that give rise to a range of emotions, some even with destructive tendencies. The coping also includes keeping memories of the missing parent alive through videos and audio with memories of the missing parent.

This editorial in the WSJ points to the manner in which Donald Trump has handled Ukraine, Crimea and Russia. By saying that he might accept Russia's takeover of Crimea, and his failure to study the situation, makes it appear that he does not really understand the situation in the Ukraine with the Russian intervention in the eastern part of the country. This makes it look like the Republican nominee has not acted in a way that every candidate from the Republican party since Eisenhower has- to protect America's interests and that of its allies in Europe.  Ironically making the same mistake that president Obama has in not acting when America's interests are challenged, with Hillary Clinton and Democratic leaders who are close allies such as Leon Panetta, promising to take strong action where and as needed, in the tradition of president Harry Truman.
